~ Ren before firing the Sinful Shell. |
“ | You are held captive. A prisoner of fate to a future that has been sealed in advance. This is truly an unjust game... Your chances of winning are almost none. But if my voice is reaching you, there may yet be a possibility open to you... ...I beg you. Please overcome this game... and save the world... The key to victory lies within the memories of your bonds—the truth that you and your friends grasped. It all began that day... when the game was started half a year ago... For the sake of your world's future... as well as your own... you must remember... | „ |
~ Lavenza to Ren. |
“ | I have heeded your resolve. Vow to me. I am thou, thou art I... Thou who art willing to perform all sacrilegious acts for thine own justice! Call upon my name, and release thy rage! Show the strength of thy will to ascertain all on thine own, though thou be chained to Hell itself! | „ |
~ Arsène to Ren upon its awakening. |
Ren Amamiya, better known by his code name Joker or The Phantom, is the main protagonist of the 2016 action-adventure video game Persona 5 (as well its 2019 expanded re-release Persona 5 Royal), and its multiple spin-offs.
He is a rebellious teenage boy who was sentenced to one year of probation after being falsely accused of assaulting a man, being transferred to Tokyo to serve out his probation sentence. He is the leader of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, a group of rebellious teenagers just like him, whose goals is to reform society by stealing the malevolent desires of "rotten adults" to change to their hearts and expose their crimes to the world.
He is voiced by Jun Fukuyama (who also voiced by Lelouch vi Britannia, Korosensei, Onion Knight and Roy) in the Japanese version and Xander Mobus in the English version, who also voices Kogoro Mouri in Detective Conan and Master Hand in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS as well as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In Persona 5 The Stage, he was played by Hiroki Ino.
Appearance[]
Ren has wavy unkempt black hair and dark gray eyes. For most of his civilian outfits, he wears a set of black glasses. While wearing his glasses, he has the appearance of an ordinary teenage boy. However, when his glasses are removed, his eyes give off an intense gaze.
As he does not wear his glasses during his first encounter with Masayoshi Shido, the fireworks scene, or the ending it is unlikely that they are necessary for vision correction, and that they are fake glasses which he has adopted as part of his public persona to make himself seem more unassuming during his probation.
His default outfit is his winter school uniform, which consists of a red-buttoned black blazer with Shujin's emblem on the pocket, a white turtleneck shirt with chevron detailing on the color, and red plaid trousers. During the summer, he wears the school regulation polo shirt, albeit untucked, and sans the suspenders.
On his days off during the winter, he wears an unbuttoned black blazer over a black-trimmed cream sweater, blue jeans, and brown shoes. During the summer, he wears an open white button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled up over a black short-sleeved t-shirt, blue jeans, and brown shoes. His loungewear consists of a black long-sleeved shirt and olive sleep pants.
As Joker, his outfit consists of a black ankle-length tailcoat, a high-necked waistcoat with gold accents, black jogger-style pants, brown-black winklepickers, and a pair of red gloves. His mask is a black and white, birdlike domino mask. His expression and demeanor are also markedly different and there's a strong air of confidence to him compared to his usual self.
During visits to the Velvet Room, he wears a black and white prisoner uniform.
In his flashback, he is wearing a black and white baseball tee with the numbers "1797" in front, gray jeans, and black shoes.
In Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, Ren wears the Shujin Academy uniform, though he replaces the turtleneck with a black shirt with a zero on the front with "DANCE" written on it. His jacket is left open and he wears red gloves and shoes. A red rag is also found hanging out from his right pants pocket. Around his neck are black and red headphones.
Personality[]
Ren appears quiet and docile, but this behavior is a profound ruse that hides the heart of a trickster. He is not very talkative, but he is courageous and wise in taking actions and also has a strong sense of justice. He has a free heart; despite his social standing and how others view him, he never stops choosing his path.
Other Media[]
Chain Chronicle[]
Joker makes an appearance in Chain Chronicle, a tower defense role-playing game developed and published by Sega for iOS, Android, and PlayStation Vita. He is a 5 Star Warrior Class who was only obtainable during the Persona 5 Collaboration Festival, which went through January 19, 2017, to January 31, 2017.
Puzzle and Dragons[]
Joker appears in the puzzle video game Puzzle and Dragons as part of the Persona Collab Event. Alongside him are fellow Phantom Thieves Makoto Niijima and Goro Akechi, as well as other characters and demons from Persona 3 and Persona 4. Initially, Joker, named "Ren Amamiya", is a 6 Star Dark character and features the artwork of Ren in his Shujin Academy Uniform. However, said card can also be evolved into "Ren Amamiya & Arsene", a 7 Star that has even more destructive power, and features Ren in his Joker uniform accompanied by Arsene.
Sonic Forces[]
While Joker himself does not make an appearance, his mask and appearance are downloadable cosmetics for the Avatar as part of the Sega/Atlus pack, a free bundle for people who own the game.
Granblue Fantasy[]
Joker appears in the role-playing video game Granblue Fantasy for Android, iOS, and Web Browsers. He is an SSR Dark Character and borrows his entire moveset from numerous Persona 5 techniques. These include:
- Eiha - One of Arsene's main abilities, delivers Dark damage to a foe.
- Tkachev - The first Gun he acquires in Persona 5. A strong move that can hit multiple enemies, however similarly to his game of origin, he can only fire the weapon a few times before he runs out of ammunition.
- Sukunda - A common debuff spell in the Persona series, making the enemy more vulnerable to such.
- Dream Needle - A Physical attack learned by Arsene which has a Medium chance of putting its foe to sleep. In Granblue, this move Delivers Dark Damage to a foe, as well as inflicting the "Comatose" effect on them.
- His Charge Attack is the All-Out Attack from Persona 5. Ren, Ryuji, Morgana, Ann or Yusuke may be shown at random for its "finishing touch" and can provide a unique skill:
- Ren can increase his Double Attack rate by 30% for 3 turns if he appears for his "finishing touch."
- Ren can increase his Attack power by 30% for 3 turns if Ryuji appears for his "finishing touch." Ryuji's skill is Tarukaja.
- Ren can restore 30% of his HP, with a healing cap of 1,500 HP, if Morgana appears for his "finishing touch." Morgana's skill is Dia.
- The enemy will decrease its Attack power for 3 minutes if Ann appears for her "finishing touch." Ann's skill is Tarunda.
- Ren will increase his Repel strength by 40% for 2 hits, if necessary if Yusuke appears for his "finishing touch." Yusuke's skill is Tetrakarn.
Persona 5: Thievery in Blue[]
“ | This eclectic band isn't interested in swiping art, jewels, or money. Each of them has experienced suffering at the hands of corrupt adults and society at large. They spend their waking hours stealing the hearts of criminals in a bid to rectify what a court of law can't seem to fix. | „ |
~ A description of the Phantom Thieves, Persona 5: Thievery in Blue |
Joker and some of his fellow Phantom Thieves were only obtainable via the special event Persona 5: Thievery in Blue. At the beginning of the event, Ren is seen chatting with Ryuji, Ann, Morgana, and Yusuke, which indicates this event, in the Persona timeline, takes place after the heist of Madarame's Museum. While exploring Mementos, they come upon a crack in a wall emitting blue light. When they try to investigate further, the light swallows them, transporting them to the world of Granblue. After a run-in with Gran or Djeeta, both teams join forces to discover what's happening with the world, which is suddenly covered up by a mysterious purple haze.
BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle[]
Similar to what happens in Sonic Forces, Joker himself does not make a physical appearance in the crossover fighting game BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, which involves characters from BlazBlue, Persona, Under Night, RWBY, Arcana Heart, Senran Kagura, and Akatsuki Blitzkampf fighting against each other. He, alongside other Phantom Thieves, is referenced by some of the Persona 4 characters' color pallets. In Joker's case, Yu Narukami's Color 13 has the same coloring as his Phantom Thief attire.
Super Smash Bros.[]
At The Game Awards 2018, Joker was announced as the second DLC character of the Nintendo crossover game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and the first character of the Fighters Pass as part of Challenger Pack 1, preceding the Heroes of Dragon Quest (Luminary, Erdrick, Solo and Eight), Banjo-Kazooie, Terry, and Byleth. He was released on April 17, 2019, 4 months after his initial announcement. Alongside Joker, the Challenger Pack 1 contains the stage Mementos, based on the location of the same name in Persona 5, as well as 11 music tracks from Persona 3-5, including new arrangements of Beneath The Mask, I'll Face Myself and Aria of The Soul.
Dragalia Lost[]
Joker, along with Panther, Mona, and Sophie all appear in a crossover event titled "Caged Desire". In it they end up in the land of Grastaea where they find that Emile somehow got a hold of a smartphone and has become a monarch stealing the desires of others in order to force them to worship him. The four of them partner up with Prince Euden and his party to change Emile's heart and find a way back home.
Trivia[]
- Ren is the first protagonist in the Persona series to be a criminal.
- If one includes the rest of the playable characters, Baofu is the first criminal for conducting telephone tapping.
- Ren's mugshot reads "P508954TS".
- Ren's code name, Joker, in card games, can act as either the ultimate trump card, the beneficial Wild Card, or harmful unmatched card such as in the Old Maid game.
- Uniquely, Ren is the first protagonist shown speaking in several in-game cutscenes, although Yu briefly says "Persona" when summoning Izanagi for the first time. Likewise, most of the in-game narration is his internal monologue, instead of the second person narrator used in the previous games.
- Ren seems to have some similarities to CR-S01 who is the main character from another Atlus title, Trauma Team. Both characters were arrested when in truth they were being framed. Also, they have some similarities in terms of physical design.
- Ren fought Giorno in DEATH BATTLE! and won.
- In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Ren's Final Smash is a reference to the All-Out Attack technique from Persona 5. However, unlike in his game of origin, where the Shadows caught in the move bleed profusely, the other players caught in this move splash stars instead. This change was likely made thanks to Ultimate's E10+ rating.
Quotes[]
“ | Yes! Before that happens, we will take this country! | „ |
