Rentarou Aijou is the main protagonist of the manga series The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You and its anime adaptation. He is a first-year high schooler who was rejected by 100 girls during his lifetime, and shortly after graduating middle school discovered that he was destined to meet and fall in love with 100 girls during his high school career. After discovering his feelings for all the girls who fall for him and realizing the fate in store if he doesn't accept them, he does everything in his power to ensure that he is the best boyfriend possible to all the girls that fall in love with him.
He is voiced in Japanese by Wataru Katou, and by Travis Mullenix in the English dub.

History[]
When Rentarou was born, the God of Love was watching the climax of the Studio Ghibli film Castle in the Sky. Due to being preoccupied with this, the God of Love accidentally added two zeroes to Rentarou's soulmate count. This meant that Rentarou would be rejected by 100 girls before meeting his 100 destined soulmates.
Rentarou's first time falling in love with a girl happened when he was 8 months old. He hurt himself when he knocked over a building block tower, and a baby girl at the daycare center comforted him. They started spending time together, but when Rentarou confessed to her, she got scared and crawled away. As Rentarou got older, he made constant efforts to improve himself in as many areas as possible in the hopes that someone would reciprocate his feelings, but every girl he confessed to rejected him. This didn't stop him from starting a "girlfriend joy fund" as a toddler, in which he'd spend years investing before learning of his titular destiny.
At some point during his childhood, Rentarou pushed his uncle, Hiro Iin, out of the path of a tanker truck, saving his life. Hiro became so grateful of his nephew that he resolved to set him up with his daughter Chiyo when she was old enough.
First girlfriends[]
By the time Rentarou graduated middle school, he had experienced his 100th rejection. At the edge of despair, he visited a shrine to pray for a girlfriend, whereupon the God of Love emerged and informed Rentarou that he would get his wish. Although skeptical at first, Rentarou learned that he was destined to have 100 soulmates.
On his first day of high school, he met his first two soulmates, the lustful Hakari Hanazono and tsundere Karane Inda. After receiving confessions from both of them, Rentarou, unable to decide which confession to accept, returned to the shrine for advice. There, he learns that because they're both his soulmates, he'll never be able to choose one over the other. In addition to the clerical error that spelled the circumstances, Rentarou learns that if he doesn't accept a soulmate, she'll die. With this, Rentarou considered secretly two-timing both girls, only to punch himself for considering such an idea.
Convincing both girls to date him simultaneously, Rentarou came up with a plan to kiss both girls without anyone knowing who was kissed first. Unfortunately, the game didn't go as planned, and so they settled for a three-way kiss.
More girlfriends[]
Rentarou's next three girlfriends were students from his school: library staff member Shizuka Yoshimoto, the school's top performer Nano Eiai, and chemistry club president Kusuri Yakusen. Shortly after Kusuri joined, Hakari's mother Hahari found out about her daughter's activities and banned her from seeing Rentarou, who broke into the Hanazono residence with his other girlfriends. As a result, Hahari ended up falling in love with Rentarou herself, prompting her to buy out the school and become the new chairwoman in order to spend time with Rentarou.
His next girlfriends were middle school student Kurumi Haraga, Hahari's maid Mei Meido, and three other students: masochistic baseball club member Iku Sutou, the narcissistic Mimimi Utsukushisugi, and the deeply shy Meme Kakure. His soulmates also included his junior high school aged cousin Chiyo Iin and his new Japanese teacher, reverse weeb Nadeshiko "Naddy" Yamato. Following a brief campaign as a makeshift idol group for a school festival, Rentarou met the school's gardening club president Yamame Yasashiki, Kurumi's classmate Momiji Momi, and Kusuri's grandmother Yaku Yakusen.
Afterward, his girlfriends were kendo club captain Kishika Torotoro, shopaholic Aashii "Ahko" Kedarui, chuunibyou Uto Nakaji, and another Hanazono maid Mai Meido. He later met and fell in love with the vice-laden ethics teacher Momoha Bonnouji, Uto's violinist classmate Rin Baio, Ahko's number obsessed classmate Suu Hifumi, and capoeira practitioner Eira Kaho.
Shortly after meeting his 25th girlfriend, former office worker Tama Nekonari, Rentarou ended up meeting Karane's family, much to the latter's embarrassment. His attempts to placate her fears about her relationship with Rentarou lead him to propose to her, and after listening on the other girls' fantasies about married life with him, proposed to all of them complete with mock weddings with each of them.
Personality[]
Rentarou can be described as intelligent, handsome, athletic, and possessed by an ungodly amount of affection for girls. Such is his desire to be loved that he has very few limits in what he will do to make his girlfriends happy, his efforts to become someone's ideal boyfriend shaping him into a being who is capable of almost anything, even things which an ordinary person wouldn't be expected to be able to do.
Despite the vastly contrasting sea of personalities among his girlfriends, he invariably pours his heart into loving them the way they are, and has routinely carried out ridiculous plans to help his girlfriends with their needs or desires. Near the start of the story, he even promises to commit seppuku if he can't be a good boyfriend to his girlfriends. He also explains on at least one occasion that he's fine if his girlfriends want to change themselves because they want to be someone new, but not if it's because they hate who they used to be.
He’s also notable for his strong sense of integrity, as shown when he punched himself in the face for considering the idea of secretly two-timing his first two girlfriends. He also won’t accept a confession if he or his new girlfriend are under the influence of a drug or he thinks a girl isn’t conveying their true feelings. He at one point explains that he refuses to tell any of his girlfriends that they’d die if he didn’t accept them, as he doesn’t want any of his girlfriends to date him out of an obligation to avoid an untimely death.
While he's usually pleasant and understanding with pretty much everyone he meets (the most visible exception being the God of Love), he is prone to fits of rage if anyone purposefully tries to cause genuine harm to any of his girlfriends. Despite this, he never goes any further than necessary when dealing with them, either because he's able to calm down immediately after his girlfriends are safe from danger, or because another girlfriend is able to talk him out of taking drastic measures.
He's also notable for his adamant refusal to do anything of a sexual or perverted nature with any of his girlfriends, no matter how lustful any of his girlfriends might be. To this extent, he typically prepares a variety of countermeasures if he expects to be dealing with anything of an explicit nature, and if something of the sort is sprung on him by surprise, he can usually improvise a solution to prevent anyone from having their way with anyone, and is always remorseful if he fails to control himself.
