If such a place did exist, maybe we could all live in peace, without the need to fight.
~ Rex, about Elysium.
...I like your attitude, kiddo. Leave it to Uncle Rex. I'll show 'em a thing or three!
~ Rex saving Nikol and Glimmer.

Rex is the main protagonist of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. He is a Driver who harnesses the power of a Blade named Pyra, also known as the legendary Aegis. Rex is devoted to protecting her, and together with Pyra, he goes on a quest to find her long-lost home, Elysium. Due to the Aegis' duality, Rex can drive the other incarnation of the weapon, the Blade Mythra.

He is voiced by Hiro Shimono in the Japanese version and Al Weaver as a teenager as well as Fergus O'Donnell as an adult in the English version.

Appearance[]

Rex is a young man with short spiky brown hair and golden eyes. He is dressed in a blue outfit with gold gears and brown details. On his chest is a green X after he awakened Pyra.

Synopsis[]

Rex lost his parents some time before the events of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Since then, he grew up becoming a salvager on the Cloud Sea while living on the back of the Titan Azurda, selling what he scavenges at the Argentium Trade Guild to make ends meet. One day, while visiting the Guild to sell his latest haul, he is summoned to speak with Chairman Bana in regards to a big salvaging job that would pay Rex handsomely for taking part in it.

Rex is being assigned to a team of salvagers on the salvage ship Maelstrom to assist a group of Drivers consisting of Jin, Malos, and Nia. Rex takes the offer without a second thought, not even waiting for the consent of Azurda before he heads off to board the Maelstrom. While on board, he seems to befriend Nia after their initial hostility with each other because of Rex's childish behavior over seeing the Maelstrom before they left Argentium. However, Rex notices an unfamiliar ship following them, but no one says a word about it. When they arrive at the salvage spot, Rex and the rest of the team work to bring up the massive Tornan warship, before Rex goes inside with the Drivers. Reaching a door that only a Leftherian can open, of which Rex was, Rex opens it, revealing a large chamber, inside which, a young, red-haired woman rested in a glass coffin as a red sword was planted on the floor before her, with a green Core Crystal embedded in the hilt. Curious, Rex approached the sword, despite orders not to, and when the Core Crystal seems to resonate with Rex, if only for a second, Jin is forced to run Rex through with his blade, mortally wounding him, to Nia's shock and horror. After slaying Rex, Jin then shattered the sword, before ordering Malos to secure the coffin containing the girl as they took their leave.

Rex finds himself on a grassy plain, with the girl from the coffin standing next to a tree on the hilltop ahead of him with the ends of her cape/scarf gently blowing in the light breeze. Approaching her, the girl introduces herself as Pyra and explains that Rex is dead, however, she can resuscitate him by sharing part of her Core Crystal with him. Though there is a drawback to that, being that if Rex dies, Pyra dies too, and vice versa. Pyra also asks Rex to take her to Elysium upon his return to the land of the living. Despite the circumstances, Rex agrees to Pyra's request, and touching her Core Crystal, Rex is imbued with part of it.

Back on the Tornan warship, as Malos carries Pyra's coffin out, he orders Nia to execute the Maelstrom crew as they served their purpose and there was to be no witnesses to their find. However, after seeing Jin kill Rex, Nia is reluctant to carry out the order, so Malos decides to do it himself, only to be startled when Pyra's coffin erupts in flames, forcing him to discard it, at which point, Pyra bursts from the coffin, fully awake, and a "X"-shaped piece of her Core Crystal missing, before with a furious scream, Rex erupts from the lower decks back to the top deck, fully alive, and holding Pyra's restored sword, with the missing piece of Pyra's Core Crystal imbued on his chest, thus leading to his revival.

Malos: You...and that sword!? Can't be!
Rex: It's kind of low to stab a man in the back...
You bloody psychopath! Pyra!
Pyra: Here!
Rex: Cover me!
Pyra: Got it!
~ Rex becomes the Driver of the Aegis

As Rex and Pyra engage Malos and his Blade Sever in battle, at one point, once Malos overpowers Rex, he passes his sword to Sever to finish the job, but Pyra quickly steps in to summon a shield to protect Rex. In the meantime, under Rex's encouragement, the Maelstrom crew attempt to flee in order to pass on what they've seen, but Malos tries to stop them before Rex attacks him again, forcing him to turn his attention to Rex, leading to Rex and Pyra unleashing their Burning Sword technique on Malos, only to be blocked by him and Sever. Nevertheless, Rex and Pyra's efforts ensure the Maelstrom escapes, before Malos overpowers Rex and prepares to finish him off, only to be stopped by Nia and her Blade Dromarch, who have had enough and decide to defect and support Rex and Pyra. Finally, the ship Rex saw following them earlier, the Monoceros, arrives to engage Rex and Pyra, and after it overpowers Dromarch's shield and nearly flings Nia overboard before Rex catches her, it prepares to finish them off, only to be intercepted by Azurda, who arrives to rescue Rex, Pyra, Nia, and Dromarch, and fly them to safety, despite taking damage from the Monoceros as he flees.

Azurda is forced to land on the Titan Gormott as his injuries catch up to him and he's forced to revert to a larval state to survive. While there, Pyra and Rex find Nia and Dromarch wanted fugitives by Mor Ardain forces. Though they manage to fight off the Special Inquisitor Morag Ladair and her Blade Brighid, one of the Crown Jewels of the Mor Ardain Empire, it is during this that they also befriend Tora, a Nopon inventor, and his artificial Blade Poppi, who join Rex and Pyra alongside Nia and Dromarch.

However, after meeting another Driver in Vandham and his Blade Roc, and Pyra's former fellow Blade Minoth, now going by the name "Cole" in his later years, the group is attacked again by Malos and Sever, joined by fellow Torna operative Akhos and his Blade Obrona, who manages to tip the scales in Malos and Ahkos' favor by interrupting the Ether flow between Blades and their Drivers. Vandham tries to loophole this by stabbing himself with his own weapons to channel the Ether into him, and also order Rex to run while he held off Malos and Akhos, but Rex stubbornly and foolishly refuses to run, and this not only leads to Vandham's death, but Pyra, to save Rex's life, is forced to break the seal on her real self, Mythra, to force Malos and Ahkos into retreat by unleashing her own ultimate attack from her Artifice, Siren, on them, reducing Sever and Obrona back to their Core Crystal forms, and damaging the Core Crystals beyond repair, essentially killing Sever and Obrona for good. With their Blades eliminated, Malos and Ahkos are forced to withdraw, and Mythra snaps at Rex for his idiocy in not running like Vandham wanted and forcing her to awaken as a result to save his sorry butt.

Nevertheless, Mythra mellows out as she and Pyra swap back and forth so Rex can get a better handle on each of their powers and abilities that they have at their disposal as they continue to fight Malos and Torna as they continue their journey, gaining the support of Morag and Brighid, along with Zeke von Genbu and his Blade Pandoria, in the process.

Rex's journey soon takes him to the Titan Indol, where he meets Praetor Amalthus and Fan la Norne. However, when Jin attacks the group again and reveals himself to be a Blade, Fan tries to use her powers against him, but recognizing her, Jin destroys her Core Crystal, killing her, but under the surmise of "setting her free", indicating he had some previous history with Fan before this moment.

The Torna group's actions spark tension and threat of war between the Mor Ardain Empire and Kingdom of Uraya, so a peace summit is called to broker a ceasefire and peace treaty between Emperor Niall of Mor Ardain and Queen Raqura of Uraya. With the support of witnesses to what happened, including the likes of Mythra and Zeke, Niall and Raqura agree to peace, but the summit is nearly ruined by an assassination plot from Argentum Trade Guild Chairman Bana, who even resorts to self-destructing his Giga Rosa artificial Blade to kill everyone, but is stopped by Niall, though the effort nearly kills Niall before he is secretly healed by Nia behind everyone's backs.

Heading to the Titan Genbu to see King Eulogimenos in the Kingdom of Tantal to acquire the Omega Fetter, it soon leads to the Omega Fetter being damaged and causing Genbu to dive into the Cloud Sea, threatening everyone living on it, until Mythra is able to repair the Omega Fetter and get Genbu to resurface. Unfortunately, Torna arrives and Jin is able to outsmart everyone's attacks in his true Blade form, even Mythra's Foresight, overpowering and pinning Rex down to kill him and retrieve the piece of Mythra's Core Crystal. Pyra intervenes, threatening to kill herself with her Artifice Siren unless Rex is spared. Since Pyra is needed alive, Jin relents, and Pyra and the Omega Fetter are secured by Torna, with Jin telling Rex off for his irresponsibility of taking care of his Blade before leaving, while Rex passes out from his wounds as he calls out to Pyra desperately before collapsing.

When he recovers, blaming himself for what happened to Pyra, Rex prepares to depart from the group out of guilt and shame for losing to Jin, infuriating them as they tell him off for thinking such things. King Eulogimenos summons them to reveal the full history of Tantal to them, along with being blackmailed by Amalthus and Indol with having their secret exposed if they did not uphold their end of the deal with Amalthus. Eulogimenos then tells Rex about how if Jin was able to overpower him, despite having access to Pyra and Mythra's Aegis Swords, Jin is unaware of there being a third Aegis Sword, Pneuma's, that could overpower even Jin's abilities that overpowered Rex before, and sends Rex and his party to the Leftherian Archipelago to retrieve it. While fighting the defenses that Addam left behind to protect the sword, Nia is forced to reveal herself as being a Blade herself, taking over for Pyra and Mythra as Rex's primary Blade as they soon allow Rex to prove himself worthy of the sword, only for it to crumble to dust in his hands.

Despite this setback, Rex and the party go to confront Jin and Malos, only to arrive to find Pyra lifeless while Malos has his full Aegis powers restored and packing a Monado sword. Nia counters him with her healing powers, using a reverse version of them to fight off Malos, but when he recovers and prepares to attack them again with Jin, Rex finally admits how badly he screwed up and offers to take Pyra and Mythra's burden as his own, causing him to awaken their true form of Pneuma and become the Master Driver, gaining armor similar to Pneuma's, with which he is able to easily fight off Malos and Jin, even with Jin using the same powers he overpowered Rex with earlier, but Malos summons Ophion to stop them, causing everyone to fall into the Cloud Sea and end up in Morytha with a wounded Jin.

Jin temporarily joins the group as they head back up to the surface of the Cloud Sea, but pause when they arrive at the remains of the Tornan Titan and enter its matrix, or womb, to learn the full life cycle of Blades. Jin also reveals the truth that it was Indol and Amalthus that killed the Tornan Titan during the Aegis War 500 years ago, and them being responsible for him becoming a Flesh Eater Blade after Lora's death at their hands. The Torna group arrive with the Monoceros to recover Jin, and he convinces them to hold their fire, being forced to attack the Monoceros when Patroka tries to ignore his order. Jin is recovered, and the Torna group depart without further hostility against Rex and his party for the moment.

Rex and his party soon locate the base of the World Tree, and discover that it is not organic, but technologic, and Pneuma has the ability to access functions of it, such as an elevator to take them back above the Cloud Sea and towards the top of the World Tree to stop Malos and the rest of the Torna group.

Unfortunately, Amalthus makes his move and attacks with Indol, then tries to subdue and control the group's Blades, including Mythra, but when she is able to resist thanks to Rex being the Master Driver, he is able to provide a means for Torna's Blade Bots to destroy one of the pillars that sustain Amalthus' control over the Blades. Amalthus then calls in the Mor Ardain, Uraya, and Genbu Titans to support Indol and attack both Torna and Rex's group, but a clever strategy by Pneuma to take out the pillars to free the Titans from Amalthus' control succeeds, infuriating Amalthus as he prepares to finish off the Monoceros/Marsanes with a final attack from Indol and succeeds, apparently killing Mikhail and vaporizing Lora's body interred on the ship when it explodes.

Jin and Malos part ways so Malos can continue up the World Tree to see the Architect alone, while Jin goes back to aid Rex and his group against Amalthus, but only after facing them one more time and being bested in combat. When Patroka and Ahkos arrive to help him, Patroka is about to help Jin get prepped for being healed by Nia, but is brutally impaled and killed by a mutated Amalthus, having absorbed so many Core Crystal that he has become an abomination of a creature to deal with Rex and Jin's groups himself, personally, fully convinced by his own megalomania that he is the agent of the Architect's will and will purge the world of humanity, thus causing Rex to realize where Malos' own hatred stemmed from. After Amalthus killed Ahkos when he tries to retaliate to avenge Patroka, Rex and his group fight Amalthus and manage to overpower him, but the Praetor refuses to give up until he sees the Architect and brings his plans to fruition. He manages to critically injure Rex while attaching himself to the World Tree to take it down, but Jin has Nia take Rex to safety, heal him, and asks that Rex stop Malos, before using his own powers to impale Amalthus with ice spears, killing the homicidal Praetor once and for all at the cost of Jin's own life.

Rex and the group reach the top of the World Tree and the low orbital station Rhadamanthus, and meet with Klaus, the Architect, who reveals the whole history of Alrest to them, but only after luring them into various visions to test them, with Rex being sent against his own party members who each voice contempt and hatred against him for what looked like a wild goose chase and was all for nothing. When Rex then finds himself in a vision of joining Pyra and Mythra for dinner, with both acting the opposite of each other, this wears on Rex's psyche so much that, unable to see him suffer, Pyra begs the Architect to stop, and he agrees.

Entrusting them to stop Malos/Logos from carrying out Amalthus' genocidal intentions with Aion, Klaus wishes them good luck as he senses his other half, Zanza, about to meet his end at the hands of Shulk.

Rex and the party reach Malos just as he takes control of Aion to carry out his endgame, but after a difficult fight, Rex and Pneuma deliver a critical strike to Aion that not only slices off one of its arms, but also mortally wounds Malos, cracking his Core Crystal, forcing him out of Aion's cockpit. Lying before them dying, Malos exchanges some final words with Rex over how different his life might be if he had met Rex sooner before dissolving as he finally dies and ceases to exist. However, Klaus dies at that same moment, shutting down the Conduit and threatening to have the World Tree fall on Alrest.

As Rex and everyone else, sans Pneuma, are told to head for a control room to try and stop the impending catastrophe, they find that Pneuma lied to them and sent them to the escape pods. Realizing what she intends to do, Rex tries to go back to stop or join her, but is unable to, and Poppi refuses to help either as she made a promise with Mythra not to intervene when she made this decision. Transferring the rest of her Core Crystal to Rex, causing him to revert back to his salvager outfit and no longer need the Core Crystal to survive as his fatal wounds have been fully healed, Pneuma tells him to escape with everyone else while she sees to using Aion to destroy Rhadamanthus. Rex has no choice and flees with the others in an escape pod, looking back as Aion self-destructs and blows up Rhadamanthus, seemingly killing Pneuma in the process. However, debris from the destruction of Rhadamanthus causes the escape pod to break up, sending everyone inside into freefall. Luckily, Azurda is able to return to his Titan form to save everyone, and as they descend, they find the Cloud Sea having dissolved, revealing a vast ocean, and in the distance, a new landmass that the Titans were flocking to. A final gift from Klaus for humanity to survive.

As Rex and everyone head towards it on Azurda, they watch the rain of green particles around them, unaware of when one lands on Pneuma's Core Crystal, causing it to light up again. When Rex and everyone else take notice, a beam of bright green light shoots into the sky. When it fades enough for them to see again, to their shock, standing before them, alive and well, were Pyra and Mythra, in separate bodies no less. As Poppi hugs them in relief to see they're alive, everyone else is overjoyed, and Nia respectfully encourages Rex to go to them.

"And thus, boy met girl."

Rex reappears in Xenoblade Chronicles 3, having grown considerably, apparently married Pyra, Mythra, and Nia, and now sports a battle scar over his left eye that he earned at some point in his later battles, especially wielding both Pyra and Mythra's Aegis swords together in battle.
