Background[]
In his early life before joining the S.T.A.R.S., Richard had to watch his younger sister being murdered by hands of an armed criminal while paralyzed by fear. He lived with guilt throughout his life and regretted that he couldn't protect his sister and believing that he should have died in her place, because of this he grew up with a strong desire to the power to protect others and this desire serves as his main motivation for his future career. He was assigned to the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team, in charge of communications, where he earned a reputation for being easily able to read people's emotions and do what necessary to protect someone, even if it cost his own life. Richard played an important role in the formation of Rebecca Chambers because he always greeted new S.T.A.R.S members warmly, supporting the rookie when she was recruited in June 1998.
Resident Evil Zero[]
On July 23, Richard was assigned orders along with the Bravo team to investigate cases of strange murders in the Arklay Mountains and being entrusted with taking care of Rebecca during the mission. When the group arrived in the Raccoon Forest, the helicopter suffered an engine failure causing it to crash-land in the forest. Richard and his team started investigating the forest until they were attacked by zombie dogs and Richard, along with his teammates, managed to make their way to an apparently abandoned Spencer Mansion. Unfortunately, Richard was forced to separate from his team when they encounter more of the B.O.W.s inside the mansion.
Resident Evil[]
When Rebecca arrives in the mansion, Richard found her sleeping in a remote bedroom in the nearby dormitory. The two assist each other in an attempt to locate their missing teammates whereabouts, Kenneth, Forest, and most importantly their captain, Enrico. The two were eventually attacked by a giant snake named Yawn in the second floor of the mansion, as Yawn was about to attack Rebecca, Richard quickly push her away and took the giant bite instead and was thrown on the air before the B.O.W. slithered away, Rebecca then dragged Richard to the mansion's east-wing while he is poisoned and severely injured.
A member of the Alpha team, Chris Redfield, discovered them and Rebecca informs him of Richard's situation and requests a serum to cure him. Chris soon arrives with the serum, handing it over in time to allow Richard's survival. Right before he passed out, Richard gave Chris his short-wave radio that could be used to receive the Alpha team's pilot Brad Vickers' transmissions. He was then taken to the storage room to rest. In the end after he was recovered, Richard have died by the hands of a B.O.W., sacrificed himself to save the life of a member of the Alpha team.
