Richard Braun is a supporting character in the manga and anime series Monster. He is a private detective who left the police after killing an underage suspect, and becomes intent on solving a number of murder cases in which he suspects Johan Liebert.
Personality[]
Richard is currently undergoing therapy as a result of the traumatic experience he went through when he had to take the life of a serial killer. The incident deeply affected him, and he constantly expresses feelings of deep remorse. It was Johan who made him realize that the incident was not solely a result of his intoxication, which only heightened his guilt even more. Unfortunately, Richard's guilt eventually became unbearable and led to his untimely demise. Despite the emotional burden he carries, Richard is known for his unwavering commitment to justice. He possesses a strong sense of righteousness and genuinely cares for the well-being of those around him. His friendly demeanor is often evident, as he tends to approach others with kindness and warmth. However, Richard's behavior has caused him to become somewhat of an outcast among his colleagues. His frequent drinking and relaxed attitude towards professionalism within the police force have caused him to be disliked by many. The lack of seriousness he exhibits in his work has created a divide between him and his coworkers, further isolating him within the department.
Richard displays adept deduction and pattern recognition abilities as he delves into the unsolved murder cases, showcasing his prowess as a skilled detective. In his quest to unlock the enigma surrounding these perplexing crimes, he uncovers the sinister nature of Johan without ever crossing paths with Dr. Tenma. Unraveling the truth behind these baffling cases, however, inadvertently places Richard in the crosshairs of Johan, transforming him into a crucial target and ultimately leading to his tragic demise.
In spite of Richard's struggles with alcohol, he remains unwavering in his choice of beverage, displaying a steadfast preference for scotch and rejecting any other options that fail to captivate his interest.
History[]
Richard was a well-regarded police agent, but became angry at how many cases he couldn’t solve, and turned to alcohol. One day he chased and shot Stefan Jooss, a 17-year old boy accused of raping and killing numerous women. At first it was claimed that he killed Joos in self-defense, but an anonymous note claimed he shot him in cold blood. Richard said he was drunk and couldn’t remember what happened, and lost his job. He began seeing Dr. Reichwein, who advised him to take responsibility for his actions and to look over his old cases, but not to identify so personally with them.
He was then hired by Hans Schuwald, a rich tycoon, to investigate the suicide of Edmund Fahren, who falsely claimed to be his son. Richard deduced that it wasn’t a suicide, and upon investigating his old murder cases, he was startled to realize that all the victims knew Schuwald, and Johan Liebert was seen in several of the cases. He concluded that Johan killed these people to isolate Schuwald.
He began seeing his estranged wife and asked her to convince their daughter to see him again, but was told she needed time. He also began hallucinating that Stefan Joos’s ghost was coming after him for revenge. This led hm to admit to Dr. Reichwein that he killed Stefan because he was disgusted at how depraved the boy was, and realized that true evil existed, and so he shot him.
One night, Johan showed up at his house and invited Richard out. He began asking Richard for details about Stefan Joos and Richard claimed he shot him by mistake due to alcohol. Johan explained that Stefan was from 511 Kinderheim, and revealed that he found no evidence that Richard was drinking before he shot him. He accused Richard of executing Stefan and then getting drunk so he had an excuse. This shocked Richard, and he was later found dead, but it’s unclear if he killed himself or was killed by Johan.
