“ | Richard I: I ask you, are you the one who will be my Master? Ayaka Sajyou: No, I will no longer be simply what you all want me to be. |

“ | Citizens, hear me! I have destroyed an opera house! A sacred location and the home to song and stage! And I'm filled with shame! I have no excuse to offer! I was careless! However! Allow me to propose a promise! I swear on my chivalry's founder, Arthur Pendragon... And upon the victory songs of great knights echoing through my homeland... I will atone for this transgression. For destroying the opera house, I vow on my honor... Thank you for listening! I pray every one of your lives are filled with the glory of song. | „ |

King Richard I, also known as Richard the Lionheart and the Wandering King, is a major character in the Japanese science fantasy franchise Fate, appearing as the deuteragonist of the 2015 light novel series Fate/strange Fake and its 2015 manga & 2023 anime television series adaptations of the same name, and a playable character in the 2015 turn-based tactical role-playing mobile game Fate/Grand Order.
Richard I was a king of England famed as "Richard the Lionheart" due to his capability as a military commander. His deeds in life allowed him to become a Heroic Spirit after death. He was eventually summoned by Ayaka Sajyou to participate as the sole Saber-class Servant in the True and False Holy Grail Wars of Snowfield.
King Richard is voiced by Yūki Ono in Japanese and by Ben Balmaceda in English. Ono has also voiced Josuke Higashikata in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Masayuki Hori in Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun. Balmaceda has also voiced Andy in Undead Unluck and Moze in Honkai: Star Rail.
Appearance[]
Richard of England stood at five feet and eight inches tall and weighed sixty-six kilograms. He had medium-length golden-blond hair with three red streaks mixed into his bangs, and red eyes that shone like a beast's. The Heroic Spirit had the appearance of a person in their late teen years or early twenties, despite the actual Richard dying later on in life.
Powers & Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Heroic Spirit Physiology: Heroic Spirits were a type of spirit that resided in the Throne of Heroes, a place beyond space and time. Heroic Spirits were formed out of the "heroes" revered in the stories and histories of humanity, and as such their origin could be fictional, historical, or a mixture of both. Richard I was a historical figure who became a Heroic Spirit after death as a result of his deeds in life. Heroic Spirits could be summoned back to Earth by the World itself to defend it from harm. It was also possible for human mages to summon Heroic Spirits, though only under the specific circumstances of a Holy Grail War. Heroic Spirits all possessed innate powers and skills that were derived from their Spirit Origin, the foundation of their spiritual being and identity which in turn was informed by the stories and/or historical accounts that inspired their elevation to the Throne of Heroes. Each Heroic Spirit also possessed at least one "Noble Phantasm," an ultimate ability or power that stemmed from a key aspect of their identity (e.g. Excalibur for King Arthur). Richard the Lionheart had two Noble Phantasms.
- Ability Intuition: Many Heroic Spirits, particularly those known to have ridden a mount in life, possessed a skill known as "Riding." Riding allowed its wielders to intuitively have the knowledge and skill necessary to expertly pilot or mount a vehicle or a creature, even if said vehicle or creature didn't exist in their era. In addition to Riding, King Richard also had a second, unique, skill called "All Kinds of Talents." Richard I was renowned for being talented in various fields, including but not limited to fine arts, leadership, seduction, and martial arts. All Kinds of Talents originated from the stories praising the Lionheart's brilliance, and gave him mastery of all of the talents he had already possessed in life. Additionally, the skill granted the Wandering King the ability to gain expertise in fields previously unfamiliar to him with unnatural quickness. For example, Richard mastered an electric guitar shortly after picking one up for the first time and was able to master boxing by watching pro boxers in a film.
- Magic Resistance: "Magic Resistance" was a skill possessed by many Heroic Spirits, particularly those of the Saber-class, which gave them a certain level of natural protection against attacks of a magical nature. When casting magic, a mage typically had to chant a set number of incantation verses for their magic to successfully activate. Richard I had a fairly high-level of Magic Resistance that negated enemy magic comprised of three verses or less. Even attacks summoned using greater magecraft or greater rituals were hard pressed to affect the Lionheart.
- Morale Manipulation: Richard I was known in history as a great military commander, earning him the appellation "Lionheart." Richard's infamy on the battlefield resulted in him gaining a unique skill as a Heroic Spirit apply called "Lionheart." The skill Lionheart affected the morale of those around Richard, making allies more courageous and valiant and making enemies more fearful and cautious.
- Superhuman Speed: Heroic Spirits were more physically capable than humans, meaning that King Richard could move with superhuman speed. In historical accounts, the Wandering King was known for his swiftness on the battlefield and the rapid efficiency of his armies when it came to marching. As a result, a unique skill known as "Godspeed" was engraved on his Spirit Origin. With Godspeed, the Lionheart's physical speed and agility gradually increased the longer he spent fighting.
- Weapon Proficiency Touch: One of Richard I's two Noble Phantasms was "Excalibur: Sword of Forever Distant Victory." In life, Richard was enchanted by the tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, going so far as to name all of his blades Excalibur. As a result, one of his Noble Phantasms was linked to Richard's obsession with Excalibur. The Noble Phantasm allowed Richard to transform any object he touched into an imitation of the enchanted sword Excalibur. Similar to the Excalibur Noble Phantasm wielded by King Arthur, Richard's copy Excaliburs were capable of projecting large beams of destructive magical energy. The power of Richard's Excaliburs was partially decided by what object was transformed to make them (e.g. an Excalibur made from an exquisite sword would be more potent than one made from a stick). Regardless of the potency of the object transformed, Richard I's fake Excaliburs could never be as powerful as the original.
Abilities[]
- Multilingualism: Richard was fluent in a number of languages, namely Italian, Persian, and French. Despite being the monarch of England, his weakest spoken language was ironically English.
