Sergeant Richard Webb is a major character in the 2021 video game Call of Duty: Vanguard.

He is a British Army soldier and friend, right-hand and confident of Arthur Kingsley after Operation Tonga. During the Second World War, Webb and Kingsley joined Task Force Vanguard, a special operations group formed to find intel about the top secret Nazi project "Phoenix". During the operation, Webb was killed by Nazi officer Jannick Richter, but was avenged by Kingsley killing Richter and completing the mission.

He was voiced by Simon Quarterman.

Background[]

Richard Webb was born around the 1900s in Britain to unnamed parents, growing up in a family of academics as his parents were professors at an unnamed university. Wanting to become a professor like his parents, Richard went off to an unnamed university around the time the Second World War began. He would also hang around a local pub where he would drink pints with his friends, and became enamored with the waitress Barbara (referring to her as "sweet bird").

Richard believed that his work at the university would exempt him from having to join the British Army, but he reluctantly joined once the draft was announced. Due to his pessimistic attitude, Webb was known for having no illusions of glory from the war, and wanted to see the war end so he could put it behind him.

Operation Tonga[]

In 1944, Webb was part of a parachute battalion that participated in Operation Tonga, where he and the soldiers were assigned to destroy the Merville gun battery and capture several bridges to help their Allies. Under the command of Captain Henry Baker, Webb and the other soldiers parachuted from the plane, but many were dispersed due to enemy gunfire. Richard was able to keep a unit that consisted of Tommy Jones with him upon landing in the area, and he and the group were saved from the Nazis by Arthur Kingsley. Webb informed Arthur that Baker died, and that they should dig in and wait for the 6th Airborne to arrive. Kingsley believed they should continue with the mission and despite Webb's reluctance, decided to agree as Arthur was supported by Tommy and the others.

Webb assisted Kingsley in taking a bridge that showed them the Merville gun battery, and Arthur decided to send two vehicles into the enemy's mine field to get pass it. During the mission, Richard and Kingsley split into different teams to deal with the battery cannons, and Richard was handed a flare pistol to signal the British artillery. Webb was wounded, but was found by Kingsley, who used the flare pistol to signal a cease fire from the British. Afterward, Webb and Kingsley became good friends with Richard becoming Arthur's right-hand and confidant, and was brought into Task Force Vanguard when Arthur was recruited. Partnered alongside Polina Petrova, Lucas Riggs, Wade Jackson and Novak, the team were tasked by Carver Butcher and the S.O.E. to obtain files on the secret Nazi project "Phoenix" in Hamburg, Germany.

Call of Duty: Vanguard[]

Traveling to Hamburg to find the files, Webb and the team hijacked a train and managed to reach the submarine that was holding the files. The group were then captured by the Nazis, excluding Wade, who evaded the soldiers and escaped from the area. Brought in front of Hermann Freisinger, Kingsley challenged the general to kill him, but Freisinger instead chose to kill Novak and imprison to others to find out what they knew. While being transferred to the Gestapo headquarters, Webb lamented on Novak's brutal demise, and explained to Lucas and Polina Arthur's past with Operation Tonga. Taken underneath the Gestapo, Kingsley explained to the others his plans on escaping, and told the others to lie about Wade's status to Jannick Richter.

While waiting in the prison cell, Webb and others spoke of what they were looking for when they turned home, with Richard mentioning seeing Barbara at his local pub. When Wade was revealed to be alive after being interrogated by Richter, Webb was executed by Jannick in retaliation for the team lying to him. Kingsley mourned the death of his friend, and proceeded to cover Richard's corpse with a blanket while he continued his plan to escape. Webb's death would be avenged by Arthur when he personally killed Richter, and the team succeeded in stopping Freisinger and obtaining files on secret Nazi projects.

The character was based on Lt. Colonel Terence Otway, who was a British Army soldier who was well known for leading the assault on the Battle of the Merville Battery during the invasion of Normandy.
He is the only member of Task Force Vanguard that isn't playable.
- He is also the only member of the team that wasn't interrogated by Richter.
