Riley would be trained by the United States Army as a guard dog, and his file notes that he shows no signs of being easily distracted and executes when commanded so. By the time he was fourteen months old, Riley was placed under the care of Elias' sons, David "Hesh" and Logan Walker, who were stationed to patrol the wall of No Man's Land. Stationed in Fort Santa Monica, Riley gained a reputation due to his skills in tracking and engaging Federation soldiers in combat, as several soldiers greet him.
Call of Duty: Ghosts[]
While patrolling through No Man's Land with Hesh and Logan, Riley assists the brothers in helping the United States Army in fighting against the Federation. After defeating Federation soldiers in the area, Riley and the group return to the fort, but the German Shepherd is ordered by Hesh to stay in the MATV vehicle. Hesh and Logan were tasked by Elias to meet two operatives deep within No Man's Land, and Riley was brought to help them scout enemies and alert the brothers to their presence. Hesh is also able to use a camera on Riley's vest to scout the area and witnessing a top-ranking Federation soldier interrogating a prisoner of war. Going through the area, Riley protects Logan from wolves they encountered, but they are saved by Ghosts operatives Thomas Merrick and Keegan Russ.
The two operatives ask Hesh and Logan to assist them in rescuing their teammate Alex "Ajax" Johnson, as he is being held captive in the San Diego stadium. Though the group manage to reach Ajax, he dies before telling them that the Ghosts are being targeted by the Federation. Riley and the Ghosts then leave the stadium with Ajax's corpse and return to Fort Santa Monica, where Operation Homecoming was commencing. During the battle, Riley attempts to save Logan from a Federation soldier that ambushed, but is knocked aside as Hesh rescues his brother. The three are evacuated from the burning building by the Ghosts, and Elias reveals himself to be their leader and explains that the man named Gabriel Rorke was once a member of the unit before being brainwashed by the Federation.
Following Hesh and Logan's induction into the Ghosts, Riley is not part of the squad's mission in tracking down Rorke, and finding information on the Federation creating the weapon system LOKI. Riley later appears at the Las Vegas safehouse where Elias, Hesh, Logan and Merrick rendezvous until they are ambushed by the Federation. Elias orders Riley to hide, and the German Shepherd managed to evade the Federation while Walker is interrogated and killed by Rorke. When Hesh, Logan, Merrick and Keegan escape from the complex, Riley arrives and assists the group he is wounded. He is then rescued by Logan and is evacuated from the area alongside the others and taken to the U.S.S. Liberator, where he was treated for his wounds.
