Sergeant Alex James Murphy, also known as RoboCop, is the titular main protagonist of the RoboCop franchise.
He is a ruthlessly determined cybernetic enhanced law enforcement officer who serves as a protector.

RoboCop (1987)[]

Robocop was formerly Alex Murphy, a Detroit police officer in the near future. Recently transferred to the Metro West precinct and partnered with Anne Lewis, Murphy engaged in a high-speed chase and cornered a group of drug dealers led by Detroit crime boss Clarence Boddicker. Following the group into an abandoned steel mill, Murphy was caught, tortured and brutally executed by Boddicker and his gang.
Murphy was rushed to the operating table, where he was declared dead; however, mega-corporation Omni Consumer Products (OCP), which had recently taken over operation of Detroit's law enforcement, had other plans for him. Bob Morton, an executive in the Security Concepts division, used Murphy for his Robocop program. Combining state-of-the-art technology, armor and weaponry, OCP merged Murphy's mind with machinery to create Robocop, the crime-fighting cyborg.
OCP programmed Robocop with three prime directives: serve the public trust, protect the innocent, and uphold the law. A fourth, unknown directive remained hidden in his programming. At first, Robocop cleaned up crime in Detroit and had citizens cheering and criminals on the run. Before long, however, Alex Murphy's memories began to haunt the cyborg. Searching for clues to his past, Robocop rediscovered memories of his happy family life and his murder at the hands of Boddicker's gang. He became determined to get vengeance for his own murder.
Robocop tracked down Boddicker's henchmen on a quest for Boddicker himself. He soon learned that the corruption extended to Dick Jones, the Vice President of OCP, who was working with Boddicker. While attempting to arrest Jones, Robocop's fourth directive activated and prevented him from taking action against any senior OCP official. Jones attacked Robocop with his own mechanical enforcement droid, the bumbling ED-209. Robocop escapes into the parking complex, however he is then confronted by Detroit Police SWAT team led by Lt. Hedgecock who Robocop helped negotiated the hostage taker Ron Miller who Mayor Gibson and his staff hostage earlier has betrayed Detroit Police and taken control of the SWAT to follow Dick Jones' orders to destroy him. Before they open fire a few SWAT team members Kaplan, Jerry, Manson and Ramirez Robocop's comrades protest and tried to stop him and they walk off disgusted after Lt. Hedgecock tells them they have orders to destroy him.
With the help of Murphy's old partner, Lewis who was alerted by Kaplan and the others to Lt. Hedgecock's treachery arrives to save him, Robocop escaped capture and returned to the steel mill where Murphy had first encountered Boddicker's gang. Jones ordered Boddicker to destroy Robocop and a climactic showdown ensued. One by one, Robocop and Lewis took out Boddicker's thugs and ultimately, Boddicker himself. Robocop then returned to OCP and, after a hostage standoff, was able to kill Jones when the enraged senior OCP executive fired him and his orders on the Detroit Police force to destroy Robocop is put to an end.
RoboCop 2 (1990)[]
Soon afterward, Robocop and Lewis were among the last few police officers working in Detroit as a major police strike ensued and the SWAT team suspended for falling into Dick Jones' trick and Whitakker is the new SWAT leader replacing Lt. Hedgecock who is now been arrested for following DIck Jones' orders to destroy Robocop and his betrayal. The absence of police in addition to the power vacuum left in the underworld by the death of Clarence Boddicker (aka Unofficial Crime Boss of the Old Detroit), a new drug dealing faction named Nuke Cult tried its shot on the chaotic Detroit, seeking to reign over and expand. With their production of a new, highly addictive drug called Nuke the streets of Detroit is now more dangerous than ever. Robocop pursued the Nuke drug lord Cain to an abandoned factory, but Cain and his henchmen captured and dismantled him.
Reduced to a collection of parts in a lab, Robocop's future was in doubt as OCP focused instead on developing an improved "Robocop 2." An ambitious but amoral company psychologist, Dr. Juliette Faxx, took advantage of the situation to reprogram Robocop with hundreds of irrelevant and other politically correct directives, severely impeding Robocop's ability to perform his police duties. With his psyche strained to the breaking point, Robocop deliberately subjected himself to a massive electric shock. He was able to clear almost all of the directives from his programming (except the first four), giving him more free will than ever before.
Robocop, being an honorable person as Alex Murphy, managed to win over the striking police officers of Detroit and staged a massive raid on Cain's drug operation. Robocop captured Cain in the ensuing chase. Dr. Faxx, meanwhile, had decided that Cain's criminal mind would be the best subject for her Robocop 2 project, and murdered him in his hospital bed in order to extract his brain. Unleashed on the city to do OCP's bidding and dominated by his addiction to Nuke, this new Robo-Cain soon overrode OCP's control of him and clashed with the original Robocop in a battle at OCP headquarters, in the end Robocop managed to tear off Cain's brain from his mechanical body before brutally pummelling it onto the pavement, permanently ending Nuke's reign of terror for good.
RoboCop: Rogue City (2023)[]
RoboCop, Lewis, and Reed were eventually reassigned back to the Metro West precinct.
Crime was on the upswing amid rumors of a rising crime boss known as the "New Guy in Town." Among the criminals involved in the uptick of crime were the Torch Heads, an Old Detroit gang with ties to the Nuke trade. When the Torch Heads took the Channel 9 studio hostage, RoboCop responded to the call. However, while attempting to rescue a hostage, RoboCop began to glitch and experience flashbacks, delaying the rescue until Lewis intervened.
With footage of RoboCop's apparent hesitation making its way to the media, OCP Security Concepts employee Max Becker was sent to Metro West to oversee RoboCop alongside engineer Morgan and psychologist Olivia Blanche, with OCP installing a chip to aid in upgrades to his performance.
RoboCop searched for a lead to the Torch Heads leader Soot, checking an arcade and rescuing the informant Pickles, who informed him of a gang gathering in a slaughterhouse. After apprehending Soot, Lewis was taken hostage by the "New Guy", and RoboCop brought Soot to him. The "New Guy", calling himself Wendell Antonowsky, the brother of Emil Antonowsky, killed Soot for bringing too much attention to him. Claiming that RoboCop's humanity was his weakness, he shot Lewis, leaving her hospitalized and in a coma.
RoboCop found a lead toward Wendell's association with the Street Vultures biker gang, and he traveled into their territory near a quarry in search of both their leader, Spike, and Mike Briggs, an officer to later turned up dead; RoboCop also discovered dead bodies scavenged and preserved for unknown purposes. Rendezvousing with a police squad, RoboCop stormed the heart of their hideout with assistance from an ED-209 unit. However, the ED-209 malfunctioned and attacks the officers, allowing Spike to escape and forcing RoboCop to fight and destroy it.
RoboCop visited Lewis in the hospital, and discovered that the morgue was robbed of corpses with intact brains, and was seemingly done with aid from Wendell. Later, RoboCop assisted the OCP SWAT teams in taking back the OCP Bank from the Vultures, who attempted to rob the bank after cutting ties with Wendell due to his refusal to compensate them.
RoboCop met with the Old Man, who once resided in the ruins of Old Detroit, where he planned for Delta City to be built. Following a trail that led to Spike being tortured by Torch Heads hired by Wendell, the biker revealed that Wendell had his gang recover corpses to extract the brains. Tracking Wendell to an abandoned mall, a scuffle caused RoboCop's hallucinations to worsen exponentially, culminating in a vision of his former self. Despite his struggles, RoboCop caught up to Wendell and arrested him. Lewis awakened from her coma, while the Old Man had a heart attack that led to his own hospitalization. RoboCop met with him and the Old Man expressed his fear of OCP's fall to those like Becker.
The police believing that Wendell was in league with someone from OCP, Becker was initially suspected and he tricked RoboCop into walking into a live-fire exercise of his Urban Enforcement Droids (UEDs), though RoboCop is victorious. This impressed Mayoral candidate John Mills, who witnessed the event. Becker announced that his UEDs were set to replace the police force.
Heading to the city prison, RoboCop questioned Wendell, who revealed that his crimes were made in order to progress Project Afterlife. Wendell instigated a riot and RoboCop fought his way through; however, armed mercenaries arrived to break Wendell out. RoboCop returned to the hospital when the mercenaries invaded to kill Lewis, who narrowly survived the encounter.
Doctor Blanche called RoboCop, suspecting that her work computer was hacked to get at RoboCop's psychological profile and her research. Meeting her at a hotel, RoboCop defended her from mercenaries sent to kill her. Following a signal planted in Blanche's work computer, RoboCop entered the sewers, where he learned that Wendell was hired by the Old Man.
Arriving at OCP, RoboCop learned that the Old Man had died. With Becker acting as CEO, he fired the entire police force to replace them with his robots, and canceled the Old Man's Afterlife project, a project aimed at creating cyborg citizens to escape death. At the OCP Arms Expo, Wendell hijacked the UEDs with Becker's remote, sabotaging an EMP device that would have been used in a scam. RoboCop's glitches resulted in him being left incapacitated as Wendell stole the remaining robots and weapons to create chaos in Detroit, revealing that the chip put in RoboCop was a jammer connected to a trigger in Wendell's cigarette lighter that degraded RoboCop's mind and inhibited him from accosting Wendell. After removing the chip, RoboCop and his allies worked together to keep order in Detroit as gangs, robots, and mercenaries unleashed chaos. RoboCop aided in quelling the chaos by saving civilians from a fire caused by the Torch Heads, foiling a bridge-bombing scheme by the Vultures (putting an end to Spike), and engaging and destroying an ED-209 unit used by mercenaries to go on a rampage.
Following a trail towards Old Detroit, RoboCop discovered a laboratory built by the Old Man and managed by Wendell that was the hub for Project Afterlife, with the stolen brains and research all contributing to it, facilitated by Wendell's criminal actions. Emerging into Delta City's under-construction district, RoboCop pursued Wendell, battling his mercenaries and UEDs. The mercenaries abandoned Wendell when they discovered Wendell was no longer funded due to Afterlife's dissolution, and RoboCop confronted Wendell, learning that his name was simply an alias given to him by OCP to emotionally manipulate RoboCop by evoking his past memories.
RoboCop responded to a call on an attack on OCP, heading to the executive floor to find Becker attacked by RoboCop 2, in which the Old Man had implanted his brain in an effort to be like Murphy, but the newfound power caused him to become violent instead, killing Becker in revenge for undermining him. RoboCop battled the CEO in a grueling fight, destroying and collapsing the OCP building during the battle, ultimately culminating in the Old Man's certain death.
RoboCop 3 (1993)[]
Robocop was able to defeat Cain, but OCP began the process of forcibly removing Detroit citizens from their homes to pave the way for its ambitious Delta City project. This time OCP hires a unit of infamous mercenaries known as Urban Rehabilitators. Caught in a moral dilemma and no longer able to reconcile OCP's actions with his own directives, Robocop, along with his partner, Lewis, turned against the corporation and joined an underground resistance movement. OCP's rehab officers subsequently murdered Lewis and forced Robocop into hiding.
The resistance fighters took Robocop in and recruited his OCP technician, Dr. Marie Lazarus, to repair him after the scuffle with the rehab officers. While recovering, Robocop befriended Nikko, a young girl whose parents had recently been killed by the rehabs. Seeking revenge for Lewis's death, Robocop tracked down the rehabs' commanding officer, Paul McDaggett, but was unable to catch him. OCP, desperate to push on Delta City Project, recruited a gang of dangerous and psychopathic thugs called Splatterpunks in addition to Rehabs to replace Detroit Police personnel who resigned over OCP's corruption and tyranny.
OCP, meanwhile, sent Otomo, an agent of its Japanese partner corporation, after Robocop. Robocop squared off against Otomo while the resistance members and former police officers fought the rehab officers in the streets of Detroit. Robocop was able to defeat Otomo, aid the resistance members using his new rocket pack, and rescue Nikko and Dr. Lazarus from McDaggett, who dies in a fiery explosion of OCP building. With OCP gone bankrupt and its ruthless urban renewal project in ruins, Robocop stood at the forefront of the grass roots effort to rebuild Detroit.

After being murdered by brutal criminals, Officer Alex Murphy's organs, left arm and brain was used to create the cyborg, Robocop. As the law enforcer, Murphy was bound by a sense of justice and constantly followed the three directives hardwired into his mind, but it's also revealed he had no choice in the matter. Murphy has shown to be relentless when it comes to other criminals, and hasn't a qualm when it comes to killing them however he will only attack if he is provoked.
However unbeknownst to OmniCorp Consumers who all believed that Robocop was fully machine Alex Murphy was still inside that shell. He was clearly traumatised by his death and memory of his past life, he was known to have nightmares reminiscing about what he has lost; being remorselessly gunned down by Clarence Boddicker and his thugs, losing his wife and his child after being transformed into Robocop and being forced to remember his partner, Anne Lewis dying before his eyes. Although many people believe that Robocop is stronger, it's normally proved that Alex Murphy is what prevails, as its humanity, morality and sense of justice that protects the people of Delfa City.
Robocop occasionally proves that he is not bound by his directives as people would imagine him to be. He was capable of acting by himself even if it wasn't the most logical choice. Examples are when he disobeyed his superiors to help Lewis when she was being held down by thugs and later disobeying Paul McDaggett when he was prepared to destroy a church full of innocent people.

Since Alex Murphy's "resurrection" as Robocop, the struggling influences of man and machine that comprise the cyborg have presented his greatest challenge. Haunted by memories of his family and the knowledge of what it was like to touch and love others, Robocop also knows that he can never be human again. However, through his experiences, he has learned to regain as much of his humanity as possible.
Anne Lewis, Alex Murphy's former partner, was the first to reach out to Robocop. She recognized him as Murphy and was the first to begin referring to him as such. Her compassion led her to rescue Robocop when Dick Jones ordered his termination. After taking down Jones (having fired by The Old Man for murdering Bob Morton and trying to destroy Robocop via ordering Lt. Hedgecock to do so) and Boddicker together, Robocop and Lewis became partners at Metro West, just as they had been before Murphy's death.
Robocop was never able to reestablish a connection with his wife and child, and losing them was perhaps his most painful experience. In addition to the mixed emotions Robocop faced, his "owners" at OCP were also concerned about the legal implications of their "product" seeking a relationship with private citizens under its own volition. Robocop ultimately decided that the only way to allow his former wife to grieve and move on was to make her believe that Murphy was truly dead, and Robocop himself just an emotionless machine.
In addition to Lewis, other associates came to befriend Robocop and treat him as a person rather than just a machine. Sergeant Reed, the head of Detroit's Metro West precinct and Robocop's commanding officer in the police department, treated him like one of the team and, along with most other Metro West officers, knew Robocop as "Murphy." Unfortunately, there was one among on the Metro West officer was opposed to him was SWAT leader Lt. Hedgecock and wants to eliminate him (which was only ordered to do so by Dick Jones), but Anne Lewis saved him and most of the officers refused to do so. After Dick Jones' death Lt. Hedgecock was relieved as SWAT leader and arrested for obeying his heinous orders to destroy him and Anne Lewis also severed his friendship. In his time at the precinct, Robocop came to earn the respect and admiration of his fellow officers for his service. They ultimately followed his lead in giving up the police strike to wage war against Cain, and later, to quit OCP and join the resistance movement.
When Robocop joined the civilian resistance, he gained a little more of his humanity back by befriending Nikko, the orphaned girl who served as the group's computer whiz. Triggering memories of his own child, Robocop's time with Nikko allowed him to feel a sense of belonging after Lewis's death and provided Nikko with a parent figure after the death of her father and mother. He also had a good friend in his technician, Dr. Marie Lazarus, who treated Robocop as a patient rather than a piece of machinery.
Ironically, it is Robocop's humanity that continues to prove the strongest weapon in his arsenal. Despite repeated attempts by OCP to restrain their creation with directives, Murphy's sense of honor and duty remain the driving forces that compel Robocop to serve the public trust, protect the innocent, and uphold the law.

Despite possessing extraordinary marksmanship, advanced technical systems, strength, durability, offense and defensive capabilities which might be considered more suited to military duties rather than enforcing laws, Robocop possesses a few but critical weaknesses that put him in danger from time to time.
- Lack of Agility: Robocop is a slow, lumbering hulk of machinery. Because of Robocop's lack of speed, He relies on super armor that grants him formidable defense for compensation. But this defense capability is not perfect. Although able to withstand small arm bullets, Robocop's armor is susceptible to ammunitions with heavier calibers (12.7mm or above). When Robocop received barrages of fires from ED-209's 20mm cannons, Robocop's armor was damaged and weakened. Because of Robocop's lack of speed, he was endangered more than few occasions by Otomo, a very agile and dexterous android assassin armed with specially made katana blade that can cut through Robocop. In addition, Robocop falling onto Nuke Cult's trap and being dismembered by them at the early arc of Robocop 2 was largely due to his lack of agility. In Robocop 3 he was struck by 40mm grenade shell in the chest, and his 'heart' had to be replaced. Had Murphy possessed sufficient speed, he would have been able to dodge these assaults.
- Overconfidence: He still has Alex Murphy's characteristic overconfidence, always going in without backup. Given his new cyborg abilities, he has a lot more reason to act like a one-man army, but this tendency can still land him in hot water. For example, in when he got captured and dismantled when he went alone to the to confront Cain and his Nuke cult at River Rouge.
- Organic brain: Robocop's brain was still largely organic and was susceptible to concussions when his head is struck by strong enough forces. In Robocop 2, Hob stunned him with a direct shot to the forehead with his magnum handgun and later on he was knocked out cold with a crane hook in the sludge plant. In issue four of Marvel's Robocop comic, Robocop is knocked out by a mechanized gorilla slamming both its clenched fists into the sides of his head.
- Electrical weapons: His robotic body was vulnerable to electrical attacks. In Robocop 2, Angie's taser weapon caused his whole body spasm uncontrollably, and brought him to his knees. In "RoboCop vs. Commander Cash", the thirteenth episode of RoboCop: The Series, Robocop is disabled with two plunger like prongs that discharged electricity into his chest. In "Meltdown", the second part of the 2001 miniseries RoboCop: Prime Directives, Ann R. Key stabs Robocop with her electro rod and instantly fries all his circuits, leaving him on the verge of shutdown.
- Joints: To allow for movement, Robocop's joints were not armored and vulnerable to damage. In Robocop 2, Hob blasted Robocop's hand off at the wrist joint while he was aiming his gun at Cain. A little while later when they were using a jackhammer on him, his abdominal armor proved too tough to pierce, but when they used it on his hip joint, it easily broke through, completely severing his right leg from his body. In Dark Horse RoboCop: Mortal Coils #2, Coffin blasts Robocop's gun hand at the wrist joint to disable him, then promptly follows up by taking out his left knee joint to bring him down. In Dark Horse RoboCop: Prime Suspect #3, while attempting to flee, Robocop is ambushed by an ED-209 that blasts off his right leg at the hip joint.
- Scrambling technology: In Marvel's Robocop issue #14, Colonel Flak and his henchmen use personal scramblers, fine-tuned to the frequency of Robocop's onboard computer, causing him to experience debilitating neural interferences. With his mind fogged and several important systems collapsing, Robocop was unable to defend himself as Flak beat and tossed him around. In episode 2 of RoboCop: The Animated Series, the villain known as the Scrambler remotely hacks into Robocop's mind and brainwashes him into doing his bidding. In Robocop the series episode 1, Chip Chayken sneaks into Robocop's chambers while he is being repaired and attaches paddles to his head to deliver "50 million Zoiden-Gauses" to wipe his memory.
- Self-destruct mechanism: In Marvel's Robocop issue #15, Johnson activates Robocop's self-destruct sequence via a remote control. A coin-sized explosive charge embedded deep inside Robocop's upper abdomen begins to rapidly heat up, crippling him with extreme pain and burning him from the inside, causing noxious vapors to seep out from within his body. Within a few minutes, the charge would detonate with enough force to instantly vaporize a grown man.

But there is a fourth classified directive called Directive 4 which supersedes the above three directives - do not make an attempt to arrest OCP staffs. Any attempt to do so will result in system disruption, inflicting Robocop a crippling pain. Should Murphy manage to override his systematic pain and make further attempt to force his arrest on OCP members it will ultimately result in system shutdown.
This technical shackle placed on Murphy continues to plague him throughout the series, as he is unable to make his move on corrupt OCP executives so long as they are under OCP contract. During RoboCop 2 when Murphy was overrode with hundreds of garbage directives which compelled him to risk electrocution to remove all these rubbishes, Directive 4 persisted into his programming. Murphy was only able to kill Dick Jones because Jones was fired by the OCP president, making Jones no longer an OCP's employee. Robocop could only watch Old Man and dr. Faxx escape legal justice (albeit temporary for dr. Faxx) after drug-crazed Robocain, made by the approval of Old Man and dr. Faxx, caused bloody carnage which might not have happened had Old Man and Faxx did not give Robocain green light to be made. In Robocop 3 Murphy was unable to stop and fight back as rehab mercenaries hired by OCP (thereby making rehab mercs personnel of OCP) who proceeded to violently evict Detroit residents and committing egregious crime of murdering his fellow officer Anne Lewis. Eventually Dr. Lazarus, a former OCP scientist, was able to remove Directive 4 from Murphy, enabling Murphy to side with rebel residents of Detroit and strike back against OCP.

RoboCop appears in the video game Mortal Kombat 11 as a DLC guest character with Peter Weller reprising his role and also served as an announcer for the game.

- Lance Henrikson, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Ironside, Rutger Hauer, Tom Berenger and Armand Assante were all considered for the role before Peter Weller was cast.
- Arnold Schwarzenegger was briefly considered for the role of RoboCop, but those involved with the film were concerned he would be too bulky in the suit and end up looking like the Michelin Man.
- It was discovered that when in full RoboCop costume, Peter Weller could not fit properly into the police car as he was too bulky. That's why most shots of him show him exiting the car or preparing to get into it. For shots where he actually needed to be in the car, he only wore the top part of the costume and sat in his underwear. However, to maintain the illusion that RoboCop wears the entire suit while inside a car, most shots show his robotic feet exiting the car first.
- When in full RoboCop costume, Peter Weller would remain in character between takes, only responding to director Paul Verhoeven's instructions when properly addressed as "Robo." Verhoeven found this too funny to take seriously and dropped this after a couple of weeks.
- The RoboCop suit was so hot and heavy that Peter Weller was losing 3 lbs a day from water loss. Eventually, an air conditioner was installed in the suit.
- RoboCop is based on Judge Dredd, though his design was inspired by Space Sheriff Gavan.
- Cyberswine is based on RoboCop.
- Director Paul Verhoeven commented that Robocop's character is inspired by Jesus Christ:
- Murphy's hand being blown off by Boddicker Gang is akin to Jesus being crucified.
- Both Murphy and Jesus are men of faiths.
- Both Murphy and Jesus died, then returned to life.
- Murphy walking through the water pool at the climax of the first movie is inspired by Jesus walking on water.
- He is of Irish descent and was raised Catholic.
- In "The Indian in the Cupboard", Omri puts a Robocop action figure along a Darth Vader action figure from "Star Wars", a Cardassian action figure from "Star Trek: The Next Generation", a Ferengi action figure from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and a Tyrannosaur action figure from "Jurassic Park" in the cupboard and brings them to live. Only for the Robocop figure to shoot at the Cardassian and Ferengi figure and then see Omri, the figures were restored to their to being action figures again. 
- RoboCop fought the Terminator in season 2 of DEATH BATTLE and won.
