~ Rodney Aran |
Rodney Aran is the posthumous supporting character who first appeared in the Metroid Manga. He is the late husband of Virginia Aran and father of Samus Aran. He once lived within the colony K-2L before he died protecting the afloraltite from being used by the Space Pirates for their own selfish ambitions.
Biography[]
The Galactic Federation was founded in the cosmic year of 2000 and human colony of K-2L were mining for afloraltite required to establish a caravan between planets. Rodney lived peacefully with his wife Virginia and his toddler daughter, Samus. Rodney takes his job seriously and worked long hours to support his family, even at the cost of his health from sleep deprivation, while overseeing the mining of the afloraltite. Virginia worries for his well-being to the point of paying him a visit by bringing him lunch.
When the Chozo came to visit K-2L to inquire him of the facility's afloraltite, he reminds them that they are restricted for the Galactic Federation caravans. After Samus interrupted the meeting, Rodney scolds her for it, but Old Bird quickly befriended the child while Gray Voice stayed to continue negotiations with Rodney, who politely turned down their request as they would not give him a reason why they need it.
Sometime after the Chozo left, Rodney noticed something awry when the Beatrix III wasn't leaving, and he realized that the Space Pirates are about to attack the colony. With the attack ongoing, Rodney managed to get inside the pirates' cargo ship as they made off with the afloraltite before he is confronted by the Zebesians, with only a laser for defense. They learned that a weak laser would be enough to blow up the afloraltite aboard the ship. With self-sacrifice being the only option left at this point, Rodney fires the laser at the afloraltite, causing the ship to explode and gravely wounding Ridley. As a result, Rodney was killed.
Rodney was referenced in the form of being mentioned a few times and appeared in flashbacks since then. Several years later, Samus, now a young woman was fighting to protect the Chozo on Zebes from the Space Pirates and encounters Ridley for the first time since the raid and the pirate leader insults her as he tells her that with its vessel destroyed by her father, it was forced to eat the corpses of the colonists to survive. When Samus had a PTSD episode, she envisioned Ridley crushing the heads of both her parents.
Rodney Aran made his first canonical appearance in the Japanese version of the Metroid Fusion Gallery where he is seen fighting the Space Pirates on the fateful day that cost him and his wife their lives. All versions of the Metroid: Zero Mission Gallery include the Fusion Gallery.
