Biography[]

X-Men: The Animated Series[]

Rogue was born and raised in the Southern United States of America. When she was thirteen years old she put her first boyfriend Cody in a coma for three days when her absorption powers manifested during her first kiss. After her father harshly disowned her for who she was and her being a mutant, Rogue ran away from home and wandered around for sometime. She was found in a bus station by Mystique, who was a powerful shapeshifter disguised as a middle-aged woman. She offered a meal and a hot bath to Rogue and she took her up on her offer.

Mystique, who Rogue called "Mama," adopted her and became the mother to Rogue that she had never known (unintentionally making Rogue Sabretooth’s stepdaughter as she and Sabretooth were together as husband and wife once). She fed Rogue, clothed her, kept a roof over her head, raised her, saw her as her own daughter, taught her how to use her mutant powers to absorb people’s abilities and memories and steal other mutants’ powers, and would have her steal Avalanche and Pyro’s mutant powers from them for practice. Through Mama, Rogue joined the Brotherhood of Mutants and worked alongside Avalanche, the Blob, Mama, and Pyro using her special abilities to steal documents and valuable weapons for several years.

In order to help Rogue gain control of her powers, Raven took her to an associate of hers, Magneto, who had set himself up in the Savage Land. Magneto agreed to help train Rogue, and she quickly became infatuated with him. The two began a romantic relationship after realizing that his magnetic powers allowed him to touch her. However, Rogue soon realized that their relationship could not bear the weight of their demons, prompting them to end things.

Hoping to enhance her adopted daughter’s abilities and get her nemesis out of her way once and for all, Mama set a nearly fatal trap for her arch-enemy the local super heroine Ms. Marvel. She had Rogue attempt to steal a jet and fly it out of the military base it was in and during the mission she encountered Ms. Marvel, who had come to stop them. Ms. Marvel and Rogue fought and once the superhero had retaken control of the jet from her, she grabbed her and held onto her for too long on Mama's orders. Rogue acquired enhanced reflexes, flight, invulnerability, and superhuman strength, after she had permanently absorbed Ms. Marvel’s superhuman powers and put her into a permanent coma. Unfortunately, she had also absorbed Ms. Marvel’s mind in the process. Rogue was nearly driven insane when Ms. Marvel’s mind began to attack her mentally and cause her to suffer from delusions of her haunting her in her waking state. Eventually they became too much for her to bear and in an effort to escape from Ms. Marvel and the knowledge of what she had done to her, Rogue ran away from Mystique. After this, Rogue left the Brotherhood. Professor X felt Rogue’s anguish and despair and contacted her telepathically and she found him. He was able to block her most painful memories including her unwitting assault of Ms. Marvel and restore her peace of mind, which quieted her. Rogue reformed and became one of Professor Xavier’s students and joined the X-Men. Mystique was furious to discover that Rogue was gone and vowed to get her back from Professor Xavier but she never did.

X-Men '97[]

In the months that followed, the X-Men found new acceptance from the world and a sanction from the United Nations, as tensions between mutants and humans de-escalated. The team was joined by Bishop, who had been stranded in the past, and continued their fight for human and mutant co-existence.

The team was soon thrown into disarray when the last will of Xavier revealed that he had left the mansion and the team to Magneto. Magneto assumed leadership of the X-Men, resisting their demands that he prove himself, and instead demanding their loyalty. When the U.N. learned of his location, they sent a taskforce to arrest him. Magneto agreed to come peacefully in order to stand trial for his crimes. While Magneto won his freedom, the trial was invaded by the Friends of Humanity who sought to de-power Magneto as revenge for his crimes. Instead, Storm sacrificed herself and lost her powers, leaving the X-Men.

Rogue attempted to advise Magneto on how to win the X-Men's trust, and found herself drawn to him for his ability to touch her, as he attempted to re-ignite their romance With the two now teammates, they began spending more and more time together, arousing Gambit's suspicions. When the new mutant nation of Genosha was recognized by the United Nations, Rogue, Magneto and Gambit traveled there to attend a celebration.

Magneto was offered the position of chancellor, Genosha's head of government, and accepted on the condition that Rogue also be given a position on the council. Rogue decided to accept Magneto's offer, and told Gambit of her and Magneto's past. Unable to cope with not being able to touch him, Rogue decided to end their relationship. While hurt, Gambit told her that they would still be friends and that some things were deeper than skin.

During the banquet, Magneto and Rogue shared a sensual dance and a kiss. However, Rogue quickly realized that Gambit had been right and that her love for him was deeper than just the ability to touch. The festivities were soon interrupted by the arrival of a giant Sentinel which began laying waste to the island. Gambit, Rogue and Magneto rallied to fight the Sentinel, pushing their way to the bay to rescue trapped Morlocks. After Magneto seemingly died protecting the Morlocks, a furious Rogue tried to blindly attack the Sentinel. Gambit saved her by pushing her out of the way, and launched his own attack.

The Sentinel impaled him, but with his dying breath, he unleashed his powers, charging the entire Sentinel and destroying it. Gambit's burned body was cradled by a heartbroken Rogue. As the X-Men buried Gambit, Rogue was consumed by vengeace and began searching for Bolivar Trask to avenge Gambit and Magneto. She tracked down Trask's former associate Henry Gyrich in Mexico, and used her powers to absorb his memories, leaving him in a coma. Here, she was found by the X-Men, now joined by her adopted brother Nightcrawler who offered her support as she broke down in tears.

The X-Men were contacted by Trask, who had been forced to give his genetic material and control of the Sentinels to Mr. Sinister and wanted their help. Despondent and suicidal over his technology being used to destroy Genosha he told the X-Men what little he knew of Sinister and OZT, a shadoy organization that had emerged from his old Sentinel programme. Having exacted all his intel, Rogue threw him to his death from a skyscraper as vengeance for Genosha. Trask survived however, as he had been converted into a Prime Sentinel. He knocked Rogue out with one blow, as the X-Men managed to narrowly defeat him with the help of Cable.

Still unconscious, Rogue was taken back to the manor and watched over by Nightcrawler. When the Prime Sentinels, led by human-Sentinel hybrid Bastion, attacked the mansion, Nightcrawler fought to defend her. The Prime Sentinels were disabled by Magneto, who had survived Genosha as Bastion's prisoner before being freed by Valerie Cooper. Magneto unleashed a global EMP, disabling all electronics world-wide.

Rogue awoke just in time to be reunited with Professor X who had returned from the Shi'ar after learning of Genosha's destruction and Gambit's death. Xavier and Rogue shared a moment in private and spoke of Remy, with Rogue bitterly accusing Xavier of seeing them all as his pupils and not people. They were interrupted by the arrival of Magneto, who had raised a new Asteroid M. The effects of his EMP had damaged the Earth's magnetic field. Magneto was resolved to abandon Earth to its fate. He told the X-Men that Xavier's dream was dead and had led them to ruin, offering them a place at his side. Unwilling to watch anymore mutants die, she took him up on his offer, joined only by Sunspot. much to the betrayal of the X-Men.

In a desperate attempt to both defeat Bastion and stop Magneto, the remaining X-Men launched a two-pronged assault against both of them, with Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Xavier, Jubilee, and Wolverine invading Asteroid M while Rogue fought Wolverine. In a hard fought battle, the X-Men gained the upper hand, with Wolverine knocking Magneto's helmet off and leaving him vulnerable to Xavier's telepathy. However, since disabling Magneto's EMP would restore the Prime Sentinels and imperil the X-Men fighting Basiton, Cyclops saved Magneto after receiving a telepathic distress call from Jean and realizing that her team had not yet defeated Bastion.

Recovering, Magneto disabled his opponents and captured Xavier, using his helmet to disable his powers. As Magneto prepared to execute him for his treachery to their race, Wolverine managed to recover in time to stab Magneto in the back. Wounded but not down, Magneto punished Wolverine by tearing the Adamantium from his bones.

Rogue displays her super strength to defeat the guards in the United States facility.

Rogue has the ability to absorb energy from other living beings by touching them as well as temporarily gain mutant powers and thoughts. However this makes it difficult for her to be in contact with anyone unless she has her gloves for protection.

After taking most of Ms. Marvel's powers permanently, it gave her the power of flight, superhuman strength and invulnerability.

Personality[]

Rogue is a beautiful, attractive, and smart woman with a great sense of humor, a heart of gold, an independent nature, and a lot of spirit. She is usually show to have an attitude of good-natured irreverence. Rogue sometimes referred to everyone including even her enemies as “hon” and “sugar” and spoke in a sassy Southern accent. She was also a bit of a flirt and flirted with any man she found to be her type such as Cyclops, Colossus, Archangel, and Spider-Man during her time as a hero.

She has proven herself to be a valuable asset of the X-Men and examples of her heroic deeds include her attempt to confront Magneto during his attack on Metro Chemical Plant, the crushing of the Sentinels in order to save Senator Robert Kelly’s life, the defeat of Mister Sinister and the Nasty Boys in Savage Land, the help she gave the other X-Men when they temporarily worked together with the Shi'ar Princess Lilandra to avoid the crisis involving the M’Kraan Crystal and the Dark Phoenix, and her three run-ins with Apocalypse.

Trivia[]

  • In her green and yellow costume that has a leather jacket, Rogue is virtually interchangeable with her early 1990s incarnation in the original comics.
  • It is shown that Rogue is in her mid twenties during the series.
  • While it was known that she had been a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in the original show, in X-Men '97 added the arguably contentious retcon that she had a sexual relationship with Magneto, even though she would have been in her teens during it. Regardless, the physical intimacy was possible due to Magneto's power over magnetic fields that allowed him to nullify her involuntary absorption powers.
  • Rogue is a huge fan of the 80's metal rock band Guns n Roses, she even has her iconic mullet styled after Axl Rose.
  • She's also a football fan, in the season 3 episode "Love in Vain", her sleep shirt is a green football jersey themed T-shirt with the number 5 largely emblazoned on front.
