Rolland Storm is the bastard son of Lord Bryen Caron and brother of Lord Bryce Caron of Nightsong. The Carons originally declare for the treacherous Renly Baratheon due to him being Lord of Storm's End. However after Renly's death, the Carons are one of the Houses that join Renly's elder brother Stannis Baratheon. Rolland commands the rearguard after the disastrous end to the Battle of the Blackwater, allowing Stannis to reach the safety of Salladhor Saan's fleet and escape to Dragonstone. However Bryce is killed by Ser Philip Foote, who is made Lord of Nightsong. Rolland styles himself Lord of Nightsong.
Rolland is a devout worshiper of the Warrior, one of the Seven, so is not happy with the influence of the Queen's Men. When Davos Seaworth sends Edric Storm away from Dragonstone, fearing Stannis, under Melisandre's influence, will burn his bastard nephew as a sacrifice, Rolland assists. He is the only man in the plot to remain with Davos. When Stannis sails to the Wall, he leaves Rolland as castellan of Dragonstone. Hearing that the Others can be slain by "dragonglass" (obsidian), which is abundant on Dragonstone, Stannis sends word to Rolland to begin mining it.
Lord Paxter Redwyne uses his fleet to besiege the island. However Ser Loras Tyrell leads an attack on the castle. He challenges Rolland to single combat but Rolland refuses. The resulting attack cost about a thousand lives and Loras is gravely wounded, but Dragonstone is taken. Rolland's status is unknown.
