~ President Romana, Weapon of Choice. |
Romanadvoratrelundar, or Romana for short, known as Romana I and Romana II in her first and second incarnations, respectively, was the main deuteragonist of Seasons 16-18 of Doctor Who. She is a companion of the Fourth Doctor, and is a Time Lord sent from Gallifrey to help the Fourth Doctor assemble the pieces to the Key to Time.
She later regenerated into her second incarnation, who was more friendly and warm with the Doctor. She eventually left the Doctor to help free the Tharils from slavery. However, in the expanded universe, Romana would eventually return to N-Space, and become the President of Gallifrey, hoping to make it more progressive. As such she would serve as the co-protagonist on the Big Finish audio spin-off Gallifrey, alongside Leela.
Romana I was portrayed by the late Mary Tamm, while Romana II was portrayed by Lalla Ward, who had previously played Princess Astra in the serial "The Armageddon Factor" alongside Tamm's Romana.
Biography[]
Key To Time[]
Romana's first incarnation joined the Doctor and K-9 to find the pieces of a powerful artifact known as the Key to Time. At this point in her life, Romana was well-read in Time Lord protocol, but had little experience of the universe outside of Gallifrey, and her haughty personality initially clashed with the Doctor's. The Doctor and Romana I assembled the Key and kept it out of the hands of the evil Black Guardian. Romana chose to stay with the Doctor.
Second Incarnation[]
Early Adventures[]
After regenerating into her second incarnation, Romana II helped the Doctor fight Daleks, Skagra, and Nimon. The two went to Meglos before the Doctor received a summons to Gallifrey. Romana did not want to return, but when the Doctor took the TARDIS towards Gallifrey, they passed into the bubble universe of E-Space.
E-Space[]
Romana and the Doctor met new traveller Adric on Alzarius and fought vampires. Eventually, Romana decided to stay in E-Space to help a race known as the Tharils escape from slavery.
Personality[]
Throughout both of her incarnations, Romana is intelligent and strong-willed. In her initial incarnation, she was haughty, arrogant and by-the-book, looking down on the Doctor as her intellectual inferior. As she continued to travel with him, she gained an appreciation for his experience and his sense of adventure, growing to respect him as a teacher.
Following her regeneration into the form of Princess Astra, Romana became much more free-spirited and often tried to emulate the Doctor when possible, going so far as to wear a pink version of his overcoat alongside a white scarf. She enjoyed the new life-style of exploring the universe in the TARDIS, to the point where she dreaded giving it up and returning to Gallifrey. This eventually drove her to remain in E-Space while the Doctor returned to N-Space with Adric.
Trivia[]
- Tom Baker and Lalla Ward married while working together on Doctor Who. Their relationship proved turbulant, characterised by intense arguments; Ward once called Baker the worst monster she had to deal with while working on the show, which Baker found amusing when he heard about it.
