Rory Baines is the supporting protagonist of the episode "Unnatural Justice" in season two of Stingers.

He is a young police officer who is recently recruited to the Undercover unit just before they investigate the kidnapping of a Family Court judge’s daughter. However, his inexperience and impulsive inability to follow orders soon frustrates the unit.

He was portrayed by Jeremy Lindsay Taylor.

Biography[]

Rory’s real name is unknown, although he is the son of the Police Commissioner. Rory had rotated into different units following his graduation from the police academy, before being highly recommended to Bernie Rocca to join the undercover unit.

His first task in the unit was to work alongside Oscar Stone to take down a couple of drug dealers in a buy/bust sting. However, Rory fails to arrive at the meeting, holding it up until Rocca decides to go ahead without him, Stone later receives a call from Rory, telling him that his car broke down, although in actuality, he was spending some time with his girlfriend. Despite this, Rory later meets with Stone prior to setting up the sting, and it mostly goes to plan. However, Rory insults the officer placing him in handcuffs, prompting the officer, unaware that Rory is on the job, slams his head on the car, hurting him. Rory is later reprimanded by Rocca, who nevertheless gives him another chance, but warns him to pull his head in.

Rory is then introduced to Angie Piper and Peter Church just moments prior to the briefing of their next case, which is to investigate a men’s support group called Fathers Against Discrimination, who are suspected of kidnapping Simone Frost, the daughter of a Family Court judge, as revenge for Judge Frost awarding custody of their children to their mothers. The briefing is interrupted as the Homicide unit’s Bill Hollister calls Undercover to inform them that they received a call confirming that Simone is still alive.

When Simone’s kidnappers demand a ransom for her return, Rory and Stone are later tasked with following Angie to the location of the possible kidnapper’s whereabouts without causing too much suspicion, and to provide backup for her when they find the suspect. However, they briefly lose track of her when Rory fails to observe a reversing ute in a one-way lane, narrowly avoiding the ute and forcing Rory and Stone to take a detour. They later reach their destination in time to help Angie arrest the possible kidnapper as she is fighting him. However, it soon turns out the man they arrested had nothing to do with Simone’s kidnapping.

Nevertheless, after some encouragement from Angie and Church to the rest of the unit, Rory is soon tasked with tailing one of the F.A.D. leaders, Bruce Routh, to track his whereabouts in case he’s involved with the kidnapping. He soon finds Routh and a friend of his hanging out in a pub, but as Routh leaves the pub alone, Rory decides to instead to talk to Routh’s friend in an attempt to get more information into him, while also switching off his phone temporary. Rory later discovers that Routh worked in the storm water drains near the rotary club where the F.A.D. held their meetings. Realizing that he may have figured out where Simone is being held, Rory calls Mac to tell her the new information, and she tells him to wait near the drains while she sends Church and Stone to provide backup.

However, as Rory is waiting for Church and Stone to arrive, it starts to heavily rain. Believing that Simone may drown if he doesn’t act straight away, Rory becomes impatient and decides to enter the water drain system. Eventually he finds Simone, and prepares to unbound her, when Routh appears while armed with a knife. After a brief confrontation, Rory fights with Routh until he loses the upper hand, and is close to being stabbed when Church and Stone arrive to arrest Routh, allowing Rory to rescue Simone, and hand her to her father after they reach the exit. Rory expects to be reprimanded once again due to again ignoring orders, but is surprised when they praise him for rescuing Simone. Following the case, Rory thanks Church for giving him some encouragement, although Church also gives him some advice to not to call him ‘dude’. As Rory leaves the unit headquarters, Mac tells Rocca that Rory reminds him of Church, causing Rocca to consider if the unit can handle two mavericks instead of one. Rory is never seen or mentioned again following this, with the implication being that Rocca decided not to have Rory in the unit for the long term after all.
