Rosemary "Rose" Winters is a pivotal deuteragonist of the 2021 survival horror video game Resident Evil Village and the main protagonist of its 2022 DLC Shadows of Rose. She is the daughter of Ethan and Mia Winters, and due to her parents' infection, was born a superhuman with a strong connection to the Megamycete.
She was voiced by Yurianne Eve in the Japanese version and by Jeannie Tirado (who also voiced Katarina Claes from My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!, Kujou Sara from Genshin Impact, Kokoro from Darling in the FRANXX, and Norman from The Promised Neverland) in the English version.
History[]
Background[]
Rose was born on August 2, 2020 to her parents Ethan and Mia Winters, three years after they were finally reunited during that horrific night Eveline caused. Due to her parents being exposed to the mold E series, Rose was born with the potential for similar powers to Eveline. As a result of the dangers of Mia being previously tied to the Connections, the BSAA had the family moved to Eastern Europe for their safety.
Resident Evil Village[]
After an information leak, Mother Miranda learned of Rose and her mutant capabilities, and decided that the infant was the perfect vessel to bring her back her late daughter. Miranda kidnapped Mia and experimented on her, using her DNA to imitate Rose's mother to infiltrate the Winters' home. The BSAA soon learned of the infiltration, and performed a raid that ended with Rose, Ethan and Miranda's unconscious body being taken away. However, Miranda pretended to be a fake corpse to trick the BSAA, allowing her to crash the vehicles and kidnap Rose.
Brought to the four lords, Miranda had the infant's body separated and crystalized to prepare for the ceremony and give to her adoptive children. Unbeknownst to the lords (excluding Karl Heisenberg), Miranda intended to have them killed by Rose's father Ethan, whom she also manipulated to achieve her goals when taking on the form of the hag. Ethan managed to collect his daughter's fragments and brought them to the ceremony site, which triggered the fungal root's awakening. After Heisenberg and Ethan's death, Miranda attempted to perform the ceremony, but Rose's special connection to the mold prevented the cult leader to achieve her goal. Ethan, surviving due to his body being completely made of mold, defeated Miranda and gave Rose to Chris Redfield to protect so he could sacrifice himself.
Post Village Incident[]
Following the Village incident, Rose was raised by Mia for a while before being placed under the protection of Redfield and his Hound Wolf Squad. Mia taught her much of her toddler years, with grade school being easy in comparion. However, because she sweated mold from her hands when stressed, Rose had to keep a hanky to wipe it off; which Chris told her teacher wasn't an issue beyond the mess. Rose was approached by a girl named Lucy, who offered friendship. However, Lucy and her own friend Catherine were cruel to Rose and pranked her repeatedly
As years passed, Rose came to hate her powers, admitting that she would do anything to live a normal life. In addition, Chris made Rose learn basic self defense and kept K from his squad as her main contact. Rose declined being recruited by Chris into his Hound Wolf squad repeatedly, having seen what they went through.
Shadows of Rose[]
Unbeknownst to everyone, due to fragment of the Black God surviving the Village incident, Mother Miranda's conscious was still intact and continuing her plans to revive Eva. Rose is tricked by the cult leader into entering the realm of consciousness, revealing that she remove her powers if she finds the purifying crystal within the Black god. Inside the realm, Rose encounters copies of her known as husks, created by Miranda to make a perfect vessel, and Face Eaters, creatures made to kill and induce stress in said husks. When escaping from the creatures, she is assisted by a entity known as "Michael", who acts as her guide and mortal support during her search.
Finding herself inside a recreation of Castle Dimitrescu, Rose discovers the purifying crystal caged by the Masked Duke, who sends Face Eaters to kill her. Rose then proceeds to find all of the masks needed to retrieve the crystal, but the Masked Duke reveals that its a replica, and has her battle against the Executioner. She manages to defeat the Duke's minion, and is forced to escape from the castle with the help of Michael. Awaking deeper into the stratum, Rose encounters Eveline, who torments the teenager with recounting her trauma from bullying. Solving numerous puzzles and evading dolls of her mother and her tormenters, Rose is assisted by Michael once again and defeats Eveline.
Saved by Michael, revealed to be her father's consciousness that was recorded within the Black God, Rose is brought the final level of the stratum. Battling her way across the village, Rose successfully removes her power when using the purifying crystal, but is confronted by Mother Miranda. The cult leader reveals her manipulations and attempts to attack her, but is stopped by Ethan, who helps his daughter escape to another part of the realm. Miranda then attacks Ethan, and Rose decides to destroy the crystal to regain her powers and fight against the cult leader. Rose defeats Miranda with the help of Ethan, and the two share a goodbye before the former awakes back to reality.
Following the events within the Black God, Rose decided to join Chris' operation, and visisted her father's grave with new found appreciation for him.
Appearance[]
As a baby, Rose had short blonde hair and wore a knitted pink sweater and white pants.
As a teen, her hair is long and stringy as Mia's. Her eyes are a dull grey. A unique feature of Rose is that her four fingers are discolored grey as a result of the mold in her body.
Whenever she uses her powers fully, Rose's veins light up in a blue grey glow.
Personality[]
Having grown up isolated and picked on by children, Rose is pretty sour but with a good heart. She tends to swear a lot like Moira Burton, typically the F word. Despite being obedient, she can be easily provoked, as an agent referred to her as "Eveline," considering her a monster, which she reacted with a threat that frightened him into retracting it; albeit, it is heavily implied that she wouldn't have actually hurt the agent, rather only aimed to scare him into accepting that she is not Eveline, but also more powerful.
Rose loves her family, especially her father Ethan. Her mother, Mia, did her best to raise her, with Rose's diary memory showing her excited to show off what Mia had taught her in school. Despite only knowing him when she was a baby, Mia feels a strong connection to her late father, Ethan; from the mold, she regained memories since being a baby, thus she both knows what Ethan went through to save her, and appreciates him even more from the knowledge.
Rose felt insecurity about her unique biology, but the love of her parents helped her accept it, while also firmly considering herself a human. Her connection to her humanity strengthened her to resist the influence of Mother Miranda, rejecting the mad memory's impossible desire to remake Rose into her own daughter, Eva.

Trivia[]
- It's unknown how useful Rose is as an agent against bioterrorism; she can only affect mold.
- Though she may be an agent specifically meant to combat The Connections (who use the mold).
- Like Sherry Birkin, her mutations have granted her a healing factor.
- Rose being ostracized and even picked on for being how she was born is similar to Naruto Uzumaki.
- Rose trying to get rid of her powers is similar to Emma Swan, who attempted remove the Darkness within herself.
- The adventure Rose goes through in the Megamycete is similar to how Tommy Oliver got an upgraded power by confronting his past selves. Only in Rose's case, she is fighting past villains who used the Megamycete power before her.
- When confronting Miranda, Rose defiantly tells the insane witch that she is herself and not vessel for her daughter Eva. Just like how Sora and Roxas hate being confused for each other and assert they are themselves.
- Rose having a sour demeaner and worrying that her powers could harm others is similar to Raven.
- Her veins lighting up from using her mold powers is similar to Eclipsa Butterfly's dark magic; however, the difference is that Eclipsa's marks were permanent, but Rose's veins stop glowing after her powers go inert.
- To defeated Miranda, Rose uses her power over the Megamycete against the demented witch; just like how the Doctor uses their enemies' own power to defeat themselves.
- Fittingly the part of the recreated Benevento house that involves Mia dolls that move like Weeping Angels; they only move when Rose isn't looking.
- She is hated and blamed for things not her fault by Eveline, due to the B.O.W.'s inability to understand freedom of choice; just like how Rein Shroud is hated and blamed by the former hero Arios, for his ego and incompetence. Both have the common theme that the villain is delusional and believes their own faults are the other person's doing.
