“ | Once, this impoverished village could support no more than 50 people. Back then, survival would always mean that someone must be sacrificed. On the surface, there exists a world where everyone can live. That's what I believed as I fought. But I was wrong. In the end, I was going to sacrifice more lives than ever before. I must atoned for that sin. | „ |

Rossiu Adai is a supporting protagonist in the anime series Gurren Lagann; He is a young boy from the underground village Adai, a village who worship Gunmen as gods. After his beliefs are proven wrong by Team Dai-Gurren, he leaves his village with the twins Gimmy and Darry on their quest to defeat the Beastmen.
He is voiced by Mitsuki Saiga (who also voiced Heinkel Wolfe in Hellsing) in the Japanese version and Johnny Yong Bosch (who also voiced Lelouch vi Britannia in Code Geass, Ichigo Kurosaki in Bleach and Broly in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero) in the English version.
Appearance[]
Before the time skip, Rossiu is a rather goofy looking teenage boy, with slightly long black hair pulled back in a pony tail, a bang on the right side of his face, thick black eyebrows and black eyes. His most distinguishing feature is his larger-than-average forehead, which earns him the nickname "Forehead Boy" from Kamina. His clothing includes loose white-blue pants tucked into tan boots and a white poncho/cloak with a high collar and two rectangular blue markings on the left side.
After the time skip, Rossiu has become noticeably taller, with his hair now reaching past his shoulders. He wears a white coat that goes down close to his ankles. He wears white pants and boots, and two orange shoulder pads, the left one having a darker orange stripe down the middle. There are two orange stars on the left side of his chest.
Personality[]
Rossiu starts off a very earnest and loyal boy. He welcomes Kamina, Simon and Yoko when they arrive in Adai Village and gives them food, showing he is friendly with strangers. He is shown to be quite prim, always following rules in a strict manner and going as far as asking Yoko to cover herself. He is often seen with Darry and Gimmy and seems to be protective over them. He reveals himself to be brave when he becomes Gurren Lagann's pilot alongside Simon.
After the 7-years timeskip, he is still shown to be very serious, as well as more confident and determined, taking his role as a government official to heart. He is also much colder and more aggressive, never hiding that he disagrees with Simon and berating him for his imprudent behavior. His fear of the destruction of mankind by the Anti-Spiral army leads him to develop extremist views, showing how far he is ready to go for what he believes is the good thing to do. He shows a lot of prudence and reflection and appears as a charismatic orator who is able to take hard decisions. He also seems rather oblivious to Kinon's feelings for him at first. Later in the series, after Simon saved the Earth from the moon falling onto it, his insecurity shows as he is about to commit suicide out of shame for what he has done.
In the epilogue, he seems to have wised up by becoming president and he wonders where Simon is, hinting at the fact that he regrets not seeing him anymore.
History[]
Rossiu was born and raised in the underground village of Adai, where the population cannot exceed fifty people, otherwise someone is randomly banished to the surface. His mother is said to have died from this exile.
He first meets Team Dai-Gurren when they fall into Adai Village and he takes care of them, being rather close to Magin, the chief. Upon discovering that the surface is not inhabited by gods, proving the religion he wholeheartedly believed in to be false, he decides to accompany Gimmy and Darry when they are cast away from the village and the three of them join Team Dai-Gurren. After Kamina's demise, he becomes Gurren's pilot with Simon as Lagann's and he fights against Lordgenome, but as Gurren is detached and thrown away from Lagann, all he can do is sit and watch while Simon and Lordgenome fight each other.
After the 7-year timeskip, Rossiu has become Supreme Commander Simon's right-hand man and therefore the second in command in Kamina City. With his new responsibilities, he shows much more coldness and resolve and berates Simon for risking his life by fighting with Gurren Lagann. He also scolds him for not worrying enough about Lordgenome's final threat that the moon would destroy mankind. He runs a secret laboratory with Guinble Kite and Kinon Bachika where he turns Lordgenome into a biocomputer in order to have access to his memories and he learns the truth about the Anti-Spirals. When a brainwashed Nia announces mankind's annihilation by the Anti-Spirals to the public, Rossiu decides to take action and he overthrows Simon, sending him to prison and sentencing him to death. After taking the power, he elaborates a plan to save the most lives by sending a spaceship, the Arc-Gurren, into space with people onboard, while making the rest of humanity stay in the remaining underground villages. When Ron informs him that nobody would survive the impact between the moon and Earth, and that the planet would become unhabitable for one year because of it, he decides to embark animals and to abandon the rest of mankind instead. Under the pressure of time, he manages to escape only with half the expected population and his plan ultimately fails when the spaceship is ambushed by the Anti-Spiral's army. Simon and the rest of Team Dai-Gurren succeed in destroying the Anti-Spiral's army and in stopping the moon from falling, and everyone goes back to Earth, leaving Rossiu ashamed of his actions and failures. A few days later, he leaves a farewell message and goes back to Adai Village to commit suicide in order to atone for his mistakes, where he is saved by Kinon and Simon who encourages him to keep on fighting. Rossiu decides to look after Kamina City with Kinon and Guinble, while Simon and Team Dai-Gurren set for space to confront the Anti-Spiral. After the Anti-Spiral's defeat, Rossiu is the priest for Simon and Nia's wedding.
In the epilogue, we learn that he has become the president of Kamina City and an ambassador for peace in the galaxy. He wonders where Simon is and he believes that he is watching over his friends and companions.
