The story of Rouge the Bat from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
Sonic Adventure 2[]
Rouge debuts in this game as part of the Dark storyline regarding herself, Shadow, and Doctor Eggman, serving as an undercover agent for the Guardian Units of Nations with infiltrating Eggman's forces, managing to bribe her way into Doctor Eggman's inner circle, where she meets Shadow and aids him with stealing three Chaos Emeralds from G.U.N.'s Prison Island to power the Eclipse Cannon in the Space Colony ARK. After Eggman attains all seven, he tries to use the Eclipse Cannon to attack the Earth, but triggers his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik's, doomsday program he installed to take revenge against G.U.N. for the death of his granddaughter, Maria Robotnik during their raid on the ARK 50 years earlier, by turning the ARK into a giant bomb to wipe out humanity. Rouge watches as Shadow is convinced to aid Sonic with stopping the ARK from crashing into the Earth, but after Super Sonic and Super Shadow defeat the Finalhazard and restore the ARK to a stable orbit, Shadow is presumed dead after using his full power by removing his Limiter rings to help Super Sonic, and Sonic returns with one of his Limiter rings, which he hands over to Rouge, leaving the bat mourning his apparent demise before returning to Earth.
Sonic Heroes[]
While infiltrating one of Eggman's bases in search of a treasure he supposedly had possession of, Rouge discovers that Shadow survived, and awakens him from his slumber, joined by E-123 Omega who initially goes on a rampage to stop the hedgehog. Rouge stops Shadow and Omega's fight before they can come to blows, and together, they form Team Dark to reach their goals together. Upon joining up with Team Sonic, Team Rose, and Team Chaotix, they find that the real one responsible for everything was Metal Sonic, having evolved into Neo Metal Sonic, and been collecting data from all four teams to evolve further into the Metal Overlord to conquer the world just to prove to Sonic he was the better of them. However, he is defeated by Team Sonic after Sonic becomes Super Sonic, and is regressed back into Metal Sonic.
Shadow the Hedgehog[]
Rouge has returned to her duties as an agent with G.U.N., when the planet is attacked by the Black Arms following the 50-year return of the Black Comet. Rouge joins Sonic and all his friends with aiding G.U.N. in fighting off the Black Arms. She can be encountered in the following levels:
- Digital Circuit - Rouge needs Shadow's help recovering the Chaos Emerald from the United Federation's mainframe before the Black Arms destroy the core program and throw humanity's cybernetwork into disarray at the request of Black Doom through Doom's Eye.
- Death Ruins - Rouge asks for Shadow's help taking out the Black Arms that have fled into the mutating jungle ruins alongside G.U.N. forces deployed there as they retreat due to being pushed out of other areas of the United Federation, such as Westopolis. She later aids Shadow in fighting the Black Bull when it is summoned to fight Shadow, having overheard Black Doom mention their "Ritual of Prosperity" taking place the following day.
- GUN Fortress - Rouge has been recalled to G.U.N.'s main base to recover the Chaos Emerald at the back of the base before it is overrun by the Black Arms as they swarm in full to wipe out humanity's last stand against them as the Commander and President of the United Federation prepare for their final stand against Black Doom's forces. Black Doom later confronts Shadow and Rouge in response to Shadow turning traitor at the last second when they had G.U.N. on their last legs and fights them, but is overpowered. Nevertheless, Shadow declares that he will use the Chaos Emeralds to rule the universe, having gone totally power mad and insane as he laughs maniacally, just as Professor Robotnik reprogrammed him to be in the wake of the grief and madness the professor suffered after Maria's death.
In the Last Story, Rouge joins Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Eggman with attempting to stop Shadow from handing the Chaos Emeralds over to Black Doom, warning him that Black Doom intends to destroy the Earth, only for the dark prophet to reveal that the Black Arms intend to use humanity as a food source for themselves, not destroy the Earth, and Chaos Controls the Black Comet down to the Earth's surface to take root there in the ruins of Capital City, the United Federation's capital. Rouge is paralyzed by a gas released by the Black Comet alongside Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Eggman, leaving her helpless as the Black Arms larvae, Death Leeches, move in to feed off her and the others. Shadow is unaffected thanks to his blood having Black Arms DNA in it, and he goes after Black Doom himself. After Shadow is able to defeat Black Doom when both are in their Super forms as Super Shadow and Devil Doom respectively, Shadow Chaos Controls the Black Comet back into space and uses the Eclipse Cannon to destroy it once and for all. Rouge cheers for Shadow's triumph with Sonic, Eggman, and the others.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[]
Rouge is serving G.U.N. in this game, tasked with retrieving the Scepter of Darkness from Eggman's base in White Acropolis. She later finds that Shadow was dispatched to rescue her, and after dealing with Eggman's Egg Cerberus that blocked their exit, they headed to Kingdom Valley to rendezvous with G.U.N., but are confronted by Eggman. In the scuffle that follows, Rouge drops the Scepter, and it shatters, freeing Mephiles the Dark from his imprisonment within it. Eggman retreats, while Mephiles uses Shadow's shadow to take a physical form, before then banishing Rouge and Shadow to the future as his thanks for freeing him. Once in the future, Rouge and Shadow find that Team Sonic ended up there shortly thereafter, and upon showing them the ravaged remains of what appears to be Soleanna New City, they decide to team up to find enough Chaos Emeralds to use a Chaos Control between Sonic and Shadow to open a time portal back to the present. After making their way through Crisis City and Flame Core, they deal with Iblis, the Flames of Disaster, and recover two Chaos Emeralds, allowing Sonic and Shadow to perform the Chaos Control. While Team Sonic and Rouge head to the present, Shadow remains behind after sensing something. Rouge later meets up with Omega, and sets him up to help Shadow return to the present himself from the future. Once Team Dark is reunited, they head to the Dusty Desert to deal with Mephiles after Shadow acquired a new Scepter of Darkness, but Mephiles has grown too powerful to be re-imprisoned in the Scepter, and easily escapes, destroying it. As he creates hundreds of clones to fight Team Dark, Rouge and Omega join Shadow as he removes his Limiters to fight at full strength, tearing through the clones until they've all been defeated, but the real Mephiles has escaped, already preparing to enact his master plan to become Solaris again and destroy all of time and space.
Team Dark are later teleported to where they meet up with Eggman, Silver, Amy, Tails, and Knuckles, where they discover that Sonic was killed by Mephiles, who then used the Chaos Emeralds to reunite with Iblis, becoming Solaris once more, and has begun to destroy the space-time continuum. Despite the initial thought that Solaris was unstoppable without Sonic to help Silver and Shadow defeat him, Princess Elise senses that Sonic is still alive, and Rouge aids in hunting down the Chaos Emeralds to help revive him, allowing him to become Super Sonic, pass on his power to Shadow and Silver to grant them their Super forms, and take down Solaris once and for all. Once they slay Solaris' consciousness, and thus Mephiles as well, Sonic and Elise are taken back to when Solaris was still a little flame, and Elise, with Sonic's encouragement, blows him out, thus erasing the events of the game from the timeline.
Sonic Rivals[]
Rouge mainly appears in Shadow's story in Sonic Rivals. When she communicates with Shadow about what she discovered about Eggman, the transmission cuts off. Much later, when Eggman Nega (who is disguised as Eggman and took the picture of Rouge with his camera turning her into a card) threatens to take a picture (and trapping it) with his camera, the mad scientist is ultimately defeated and Rouge is freed from her card. Rouge appears in some of the 150 collectible cards.
Sonic Rivals 2[]
During the storyline she worked with Knuckles the Echidna, her rival, to find Master Emerald and the Chaos Emeralds. To do so, she stole Eggman's emerald detector to find them. She and Knuckles found themselves having to battle with other rivals and Eggman Nega (unknown to the duo, he is disguised as Eggman) in order to find the Chaos Emeralds while Knuckles was unable to find Master Emerald. Rouge found six emeralds which opened a portal to another dimension. Rouge was dragged into the portal by Knuckles, leading to her finding herself separated from Knuckles in another dimension. When she found Knuckles, she saw that his mind was being controlled by the Ifrit, a big fire monster that could destroy the world. Rouge managed to defeat the Ifrit and saved Knuckles, she then found the emerald detector destroyed and saw Master Emerald inside it. The two returned to their dimension. Knuckles took Master Emerald but was then distracted when Rouge calls him dashing, giving her enough time to take the Emerald from his grasp and run from the scene.
Sonic Generations[]
Rouge is celebrating Sonic's birthday when the celebration is crashed by the Time Eater, who sucks Rouge and the rest of Sonic's friends into time warps that take them to White Space, turning them to stone. Working with his classic self, Sonic is able to undo the effects on Rouge and the others and restore them to flesh and blood, and they later come to support both Sonic's during their final fight with the Time Eater, controlled by Eggman and his Classic counterpart, Doctor Robotnik, where both Sonic's are able to use the Chaos Emeralds to become their Super selves and destroy the Time Eater. With the Time Eater's destruction, Rouge and everyone else are returned to Sonic's birthday celebration to resume it in peace, while bidding farewell to Classic Sonic and Tails as they return to their time.
Sonic Forces[]
Rouge and the rest of Team Dark are acting as a covert ops team some time before the War to Take Back the Planet began in earnest. Noticing heavy activity from one of Eggman's facilities that seemed well out of the way to have such heavy guard, Rouge assigns Shadow and Omega to check it out, but loses contact with them shortly after Omega went in hot, blasting any of Eggman's forces he saw to scrap metal, and Shadow tried to regroup with him. When Rouge regains contact with Shadow, the facility he was in was about to explode and orders him to pull out. He complies, escaping just in time, and some time later, Rouge reports that Eggman has launched an attack on the City, and Sonic is on his way to deal with it, but then reports in to Shadow that something terrible has happened and he needs to hurry over to help Sonic. He is too late, as Sonic is overpowered and defeated by Infinite, the same person Shadow fought at Eggman's facility previously, and is presumed killed by him. With Sonic presumed dead, the Eggman Empire soon conquers over 99% of the planet within six months, and with Sonic presumed KIA, the people's hope is shattered and morale plummets.
Rouge joins the Resistance formed with Knuckles as the commander to fight the Eggman Empire, serving as a spy for them. She later reports in that Sonic is alive, but incarcerated on the rebuilt Death Egg, slated to be executed when the Eggman Empire is completed, and has been undergoing torture in the meantime, much to the rest of the Resistance's fury, sans Amy, who is horrified. When word of the Resistance launching a rescue attempt reaches Eggman, he pushes Sonic's execution ahead of schedule, so the Resistance had to hurry to the Death Egg and rescue Sonic before his execution. They succeed thanks to a rookie soldier, and Sonic reunites with Rouge and the others to aid their efforts to take back the planet from Eggman. After Knuckles' Operation Big Wave fails thanks to Infinite, Rouge had been busy collecting intel on the whereabouts of Eggman's main database, finding it in the Chemical Plant. With the data collected, the Resistance is able to launch a multi-parted plan to destroy the Death Egg, cutting off the power supply to Infinite's Phantom Ruby Prototype. With the Death Egg gone, they launch a second invasion of Metropolis, and succeed in capturing Eggman's capital, forcing him to retreat to the Eggman Empire Fortress for his last stand. Rouge joins everyone in the final push, but even with the arrival of a repaired and revenge-seeking Omega, Infinite prepares to wipe the Resistance out with a virtual sun as part of Eggman's endgame. However, the Rookie stops it thanks to having gotten their hands on a Phantom Ruby Prototype they found earlier in the Mystic Jungle outside Eggman's abandoned lab where he did his research into the Phantom Ruby, and the Resistance is able to push forward, with Sonic and the Rookie defeating Infinite before destroying the reactor in the heart of the fortress, only for Eggman to bring out his trump card: The Death Egg Robot powered by the original Phantom Ruby, with Rouge reporting that the real Phantom Ruby was now bolstering Eggman's forces with thousands of replicas of Shadow, Zavok, Metal Sonic, Chaos, and Infinite. However, Sonic, Classic Sonic, and the Rookie are able to destroy the Death Egg Robot, wiping out the Eggman Army and leaving the Resistance the victors of the War to Take Back the Planet.
Rouge then sees off Classic Sonic as he's returned to his dimension, and later returns to the Resistance HQ, where Knuckles officially disbands the Resistance now that the war is over. Rouge commends the Rookie for their efforts during the war, and agrees with Tails about how their friendships are stronger than ever as they set about to begin the restoration of the world following the war.
