Rowen J. Ilbert is one of the main protagonists and playable characters in the video game Tales of Xillia and Tales of Xillia 2. Also known as Ilbert the Conductor, he is a famous Rashugalan strategist who became a butler for the noble class Sharil family. He first meets Jude Mathis and Milla Maxwell during their first visit to Sharilton and later joins them in their quest. In combat, he wields a saber and throwing knives as well as spirit artes similar to Milla's. At 62 years of age (63 in the sequel) he is the oldest playable Tales character so far.
He is voiced by Mugihito Terada in the Japanese version and Todd Haberkorn in the English version.
Rowen is a butler, and as such, he is dressed in formal attire including a tailcoat jacket. He has long, white hair that he keeps tied back in a neat ponytail, as well as a moustache and a beard.
Rowen is always very calm even in tense situations, where he will often make jokes to ease the atmosphere. Even though he appears to have an ever-gentle expression, he can deliver a piercing gaze with his eyes, showing that he can be very serious when the time calls for it. He often has amusing conversations with Alvin, poking fun at Jude not knowing about "adult" things, and he sometimes even jokes about his own age.
Rowen is also shown to be a very humble person, judging by his decision to become a butler despite being an accomplished war hero and famous tactician. However, abandoning King Nachtigal was a decision he has regretted to this day, feeling guilty for causing Nachtigal's power-hungry nature, something Wingul also blames him for.
