Biography[]
Past[]

Agatha Gillman runs away from the ocean with her daughter Ruby as a baby after she defeated Queen Nerissa and the mermaids
Ruby Gillman was born to Arthur and Agatha Gillman, the latter of whom is a veteran Kraken warrior (alongside Grandmamah). Given the heavy issues from the legendary wars between the Krakens and the Mermaids (especially with the presence of Queen Nerissa), Agatha decided to flee from being under the sea with her family for their safety, most notably her daughter Ruby, who inherited her mother's kraken powers.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken[]
Ruby was first seen waking up to prepare her routine of arriving Oceanside High School, where she sees a new transfer student named Chelsea gathering a huge amount of attention to her charm, the latter then sees Ruby and notices her true nature, leading to Ruby feeling anxious and leaves, next Ruby's friends see Conner and handed Ruby a confetti Cannon despite planning on proposing to him through a calculator, Upon the encounter she felt a bit overwhelmed due to Connor fondling with the cannon, resulting in himself accidentally being blasted into the ocean, Ruby in a quick retaliation then secretly transforms into her Kraken form and hurried Connor out of the Ocean and swam back to her family's lighthouse to confront her mother Agatha Gillman about her powers after unintentionally scaring the librarian.
Upon returning home and learning that only the women in their family turn giant, Ruby became dismay over her mother shielding the secrets of her heritage. This results in Ruby consulting her Grandmamah, who sensed her presence and showed her the true history of her mother, who once fought in the sea battle against the mermaids, she succeeds and hid the powerful trident into the deepest pits of the Ocean, to prevent anyone from obtaining the power to rule the sea, Ruby became destined to confront her mother the truth about it, She was then briefly stopped by a Crazy Lighthouse fisherman named Gordon who accuses her of being a Kraken, which then Ruby innocently dumbfounds and dismisses it as she continues her walk home.
The next day at school, Ruby sees everyone on their phones to see her Kraken form destroying and fleeing the library, leading to Ruby hiding in the Girl bathroom stalls in fear of her abilities, there she meets Chelsea again talking to the other girls outside which Ruby notices and awkwardly shouts for her need, she then has a conversation with Chelsea over her powers, Chelsea then cheers Ruby up and ditches Oceanside High towards the ocean, where she reveals herself to be a mermaid and spends quality time with Ruby in her kraken form, where Chelsea reveals herself as Nerissa's "illegitimate" daughter during the Ocean War, which Ruby sympathizes with and was convinced to obtain the trident back for Chelsea to bring peace to both their kind, leading to Ruby arriving to meet with her Grandmamah to train fiercely with her abilities.
Ruby arrives as Prom began and had a conversation with her mother about being friends with a mermaid, Ruby later storms out of the house after calling her mother out for not telling her the truth sooner. Afterwards, Agatha confronts Grandmamah for trying to control her life through Ruby. As Agatha tells Grandmamah that Ruby made friends with a mermaid, Grandmamah reveals that Nerissa never had a daughter, much to Agatha's surprise as she realizes that Ruby's in trouble. Ruby was met by Chelsea again in the ocean who instructs her to obtain the Trident through the obstacles protecting the cursed object, Ruby successfully manages to bypass the unstable environment and gave Chelsea the Trident, the latter, in a sinister glow reveals her true motives, revealing herself to be Nerissa and attacks Ruby by kicking her into a rock, leaving her trapped underneath debre of rocks. Ruby was later found by her uncle, who gave her motivation as he realizes why Agatha renounced her title and left the ocean: She choose Ruby over the throne. Nerissa destroys a portion of a couple's house, Agatha appears, and is joined by Grandmamah to challenge Nerissa, but they're soon were overpowered due to the Trident. As Nerissa prepares to finish them off, Ruby emerges in determination and fights Nerissa. As both of them grappled for the trident, Ruby manages to block each of the trident's blows, but is tackled by Nerissa's fin and tumbles. Nerissa attempts to attack Ruby's father and brother, but was hit by the rest of Doug and Janice's house by Agatha. Ruby gets up and rushes towards Nerissa, but is thrown into the ocean, generating a massive wave slowly heading towards Gordon and the students of Oceanside High. Ruby gets back up, sees the giant wave, and quickly lifts the boat out of the wave's path at the last second, much to everyone's surprise and appreciation. After gently putting the boat down, Ruby is then knocked and pinned down by Nerissa who attempts to impale her while taunting her of being a "monster", Ruby slowly corrects her and uses her laser eyes to blast the trident away. Ruby then hurries to Agatha and Grandmamah, and tells them they all need to shoot the trident together by a formula called the "Exponential Growth Formula", Nerissa then attempts to impale the three Krakens again, but is pushed back by Ruby's laser eyes. Ruby tries to convince to give up the trident, but Nerissa refuses. Ruby joins hands with Agatha and Grandmamah, and they completely eradicate the Trident with their laser eyes, turning Nerissa back into her small mermaid form, as she flies away and lands in the ocean, where she is captured by Gordon Lighthouse and his pet crab, Davey, who pinches her on the nose despite her pleas. Afterwards Ruby, Agatha, and Grandmamah stand victorious as everyone cheers for them, Agatha apologizes to Ruby for omitting the truth, and promises to never keep secrets from her again. Ruby and Agatha reconcile by sharing a hug, and then Ruby swims to the prom boat and changes her outfit into a prom dress. She apologizes to her friends, but they brush it off due to her heroism, and they hug her. Ruby then sees Connor and confesses her invitation to dance, to which Connor replies by forming quadratic graphs to spell out "Yes," much to her surprise. They dance together, while Grandmamah meets Sam. Ruby sees her parents watching and waves at them. The following day, Ruby walks down to her high school with Connor, who is now her boyfriend. As Gordon's boat stops by, Brill pops out his head to warn Ruby about a devil whale heading to the Kraken Kingdom. Ruby responds by handing her friends her stuff as she determinedly rushes towards the ocean bay, turns into her giant form, and she swims away while Grandmamah narrates the closing of the movie.

“ | Ruby: (?) Oh, hey! [clears throat] Junior prom is the sacred rite of every human teenager. As a Kraken who is barely pulling off this whole human thing, I need to be there so that I can blend in. And as a proud mathlete, I know that to find a potential solution, I have to evaluate the problem. Now, I know the rules. Our family is not allowed in the ocean, EVER. For any reason. And I love rules. I do. I really, really do. But the prom boat is on the water, not in the water. "What if there's a storm?" you might ask. Well, I've analysed weather trend data and my trusty friend, the Internet, has assured me that it will be smooth sailing on prom night. And lastly, this is the captain of said prom boat. Look into those eyes. Tell me he hasn't seen it all. I trust him with my life, and so should you. And that is why I, Ruby Gillman, should go to prom. Thank you. (?) | „ |

“ | Sam: Hey, didn’t you say that prom was a postbolognial… [?] Ruby: Postcolonial patriarchal construct. It is. But we will go as a group! As a form of protest. Sam: (sarcastically) Wow. So brave. |

Trivia[]
- Ruby Gillman is DreamWorks Animation's sixth female protagonist, following Ginger from Chicken Run, Susan Murphy/Ginormica from Monsters vs. Aliens, Queen Poppy from Trolls, Yi from Abominable, and Lucky Prescott from Spirit Untamed.
- Ruby is also DreamWorks Animation's first female protagonist to be a titular character and the seventh overall, following Shrek, Sinbad, Megamind, Puss in Boots, Turbo, Mr. Peabody, and Sherman.
- She may be a heroic parody of Ursula from Disney's The Little Mermaid.
- Coincidentally, both Ruby and Chelsea became memes due to being morally swapped Ariel and Ursula.
- It also helps that the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid was released in the same year as Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken did.
- In the Menchie's Frozen Yogurt promotion, she has a raspberry sorbet named after her.[1]
- In the original concept, she was initially going to be an only child and not have a grandmother.
- She wears a retainer in bed.
- Her blue hair almost gives her a resemblance to Coraline Jones from Coraline.
- She reads books about Geology of the sea and Marine Biology.
- She is very similar to Mei Lee from Pixar's Turning Red: Both teenage girls initially had problems with each of their shapeshifting heritages (kraken for Ruby when she comes in contact with the ocean; red panda for Mei when she feels strong emotions), as they conflict with their respective normal lives. Such personal issues of theirs were then increased with their respective mothers (Agatha for Ruby; Ming for Mei) being worried about each of their daughters. But in the end, not only did they get used to their respective heritages, but have also managed to reconcile with their mothers. Coincidentally, both have also claimed themselves to originate from the country of Canada (though, in Ruby's case, it's more of an undercover identity for her family).
