The feelings she always kept bottled up are free now. Isn't that a good thing? Everyone wants to be free. You can't always keep the things you care about locked up. They gotta be free.
~ Ruby about Weiss' repressed feelings and desires.
The mysteries of the human heart... There's a lot of stuff like that I still have to learn. Just a little while ago, it felt like too much, and I didn't know what to do, but now I look forward to it.
~ Ruby Rose in a letter to her father.

Ruby Rose is one of the main protagonists of the anime television series RWBY: Ice Queendom, an alternate timeline spinoff of the American animated webseries RWBY. She is a Huntress-in-training at Beacon Academy and the leader of Team RWBY.

She is voiced by Saori Hayami, who also provided the Japanese dub voice for Ruby in RWBY, as well as voiced Musubi in Sekirei. In the English dub, she is voiced by her original voice actress Lindsay Jones.

Biography[]

Ruby was born to Taiyang Xiao Long and Summer Rose on the island of Patch in the Kingdom of Vale. She was Taiyang's second child after her half-sister, Yang Xiao Long. She was also born with Silver Eyes, a trait passed down from her mother that would become influential later in her life. When she was still a baby, her mother, a Huntress, set off on a mission and never returned. Ruby would grow up hearing stories of heroes and monsters from her father and older sister. The stories and legends inspired her to want to fight to protect the innocent, and she decided to become a Huntress like her mother. Yang also went into training to become a Huntress a few years ahead of her.

After becoming a teenager, Ruby enrolled in Signal Academy, a school to prepare students for the Huntsman/Huntress academies. There she honed her abilities and discovered her Semblance, which granted her super speed and the ability to transform herself and anything she is currently in contact with into a mass of rose petals. There, she also forged her signature weapon, Crescent Rose, a large scythe with a built-in sniper rifle.

One day, while shopping at a Dust store, Ruby was confronted by several members of the Xiong Crime Family, led by criminal Roman Torchwick, who were robbing the store. Ruby jumped into action and fought them off, even chasing Torchwick to his getaway vehicle with an accomplice. When Torchwick and his accomplice retaliated, Ruby was rescued by Glynda Goodwitch, a professor at Vale's Huntsman/Huntress school, Beacon Academy. After the fight, Glynda brought Ruby to Professor Ozpin, the headmaster of Beacon, who noted her combat prowess and Silver Eyes, Ozpin offered her the chance to skip the rest of her teachings at Signal and move directly to Beacon, which Ruby accepted.

On the airship ride to Beacon, Ruby attempts to befriend fellow student Blake Belladonna. The conversation turns to a criticism of the Schnee Dust Company, catching the attention of the company's heiress, Weiss Schnee. She attempts to defend her company's honor, resulting in an argument that leaves Ruby upset.

The students are then informed that they will be dropped off at the Emerald Forest for initiation. The new students are sent into the Emerald Forest to retrieve artifacts at a hidden temple. They are also informed that the first individual they make eye contact with will become their teammate for the rest of their time at the Academy. After landing, Ruby meets Weiss, who is angered that they are partnered together. Weiss sees Ruby as beneath her because of her young age and lack of maturity, though Ruby tries to argue her merit. Ruby attempts to impress Weiss by fighting off a pack of Beowolf Grimm, but her technique only infuriates Weiss further. The two are chased by a Nevermore Grimm to the temple, where they retrieve an artifact and run. As they, along with Yang and Blake, fight off the Nevermore, Weiss softens towards Ruby a bit upon seeing her strategy and planning skills.

Following the initiation, Professor Ozpin sorts the students into teams based on the relic they chose. Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are formed into Team RWBY, with Ruby named the leader, much to Weiss' dismay. She pouts and initially rejects the decision, not knowing that her body has been infected by a possessive Nightmare Grimm.

Ruby attempts to become a good leader, leading her team on activities. In class, she tries to cheer Weiss on as she fights a Baorbatusk Grimm, but only earns scorn from her teammate. Ruby tries to meet up with Weiss, but is rejected. Ruby then meets with Professor Ozpin, who encourages her to try her best. Later, Weiss softens towards Ruby, promising to try and be a better teammate.

Soon after, Jaune is found possessed by a Nightmare Grimm. Teams RWBY and JNPR get help, and Shion Zaiden arrives to rid Jaune of the possession. They link Jaune's mind with Pyrrha, Nora, and Ren's, and they fight off the Grimm from within, causing it to flee and be captured. Shion believes that Jaune's currently weak Aura and lack of Semblance made it easier for the Grimm to be expelled, as it was unable to feed on the Aura, unaware that Weiss is also possessed.

On a day off, Team RWBY goes to the city's docks to survey the incoming students. There they meet a stowaway named Sun Wukong, who Weiss instantly takes a disliking because of him being a Faunus. As Ruby and her team go through Vale, Ruby meets Penny Polendina, who instantly befriends her. Later, it is revealed that Blake is a Faunus and a former member of the White Fang. Blake flees from her team in embarrassment, and Ruby and the others go looking for her. Ruby comes across Penny, who helps her track Blake down to the docks where she and Sun are fighting the White Fang. Penny aids them, and the criminals flee. Weiss confronts Blake, apologizing for her prejudice and offering to be her friend and ally.

However, the Nightmare Grimm attacks Weiss, trapping her in her own mind. Ruby is the first to be sent in by Shion, finding herself in a surreal dream world resembling a totalitarian Empire, unaware that Weiss is being tricked into believing she is the ruler of said Empire. Ruby also finds that her clothing and weapon are different, resembling how Weiss perceives them. Ruby begins exploring the dream, using dream coins provided by Shion to conjure up maps and doorways. She witnesses the White Fang attack a train and follows the tracks to the main city. She attempts to scale the interior wall, but the Grimm keeps her out.

As Ruby searches for a way in, she comes across factories and camps that show her the oppression of the Empire, demonstrated by Weiss' father Jaques Schnee. She also comes across a prison where "sillies" are kept, including Weiss' dream versions of Jaune, Nora, and Ren. Ruby begins to feel overwhelmed by the oppressive environment as well as the clues that Weiss hates her, but Shion convinces her to keep going and not to take personally the abstract and surreal perceptions of the dream.

As Ruby tries to get closer, she is confronted by Weiss. Weiss treats Ruby like an intruder, hurting Ruby's feelings. She believes that everything Weiss told her about wanting to be a better friend was a lie and that she will not speak to Weiss again after freeing her. Weiss attacks Ruby, but she escapes from the dream in time.

Ruby reports to Shion what happened, and Shion assures her that the version of Weiss she encountered, which they dub "Negative Weiss", is a warped delusion that the Nightmare Grimm has forced upon her and not her true self. When Shion is ready to send someone back into the dream, Ruby volunteers to go back, but is reluctant to let Yang and Blake join her due to how wicked she sees Negative Weiss. Yang and Blake join anyway, and Ruby guides them to the city. Upon seeing another prison for "sillies", Ruby observes a dream version of Pyrrha kept inside, singing a song. Blake finds a way into the central part of the city, and they travel there. However, Weiss discovers they are loose and puts out an announcement that Yang and Ruby have escaped from the tower. Ruby and Yang realize that they replaced their dream counterparts, who were locked in the very tower they are trying to get to. Ruby and Yang surrender to the security detail, being brought back to the tower.

Yang and Ruby note that the room they are locked in is full of the most important things in Weiss' life. Ruby finds a red relic resembling the one they took during initiation, and Shion informs them it may be important to waking Weiss up. Blake arrives and frees them, but they decide that one should stay behind to quell suspicions. After a game of rock-paper-scissors, Ruby wins and goes on while Yang stays behind. Ruby and Blake enter a large chamber of thrones but are suddenly cornered by Negative Weiss and the security detail, who anticipated Blake's arrival.

Blake stays to distract Nega-Weiss while Ruby gets Yang and they go searching for the Grimm. Using the relic, Ruby is able to clear the Grimm's dangerous thorns and open a path for them. They are attacked by Weiss' security, led by "Grumpy Klein", but are able to defeat them. Ruby and Yang meet back up with Blake and travel deeper, eventually finding the Grimm. However, Weiss attacks, protecting the Grimm and overwhelming the others, Ruby uses the last of Shion's Aura to pull herself, Blake, and Yang out of the dream, but not before the relic is destroyed and Ruby's hand is cut on thorns, an injury that translates to her physical body.

As Ruby and her team try to figure out what to do, Ruby meets with JNPR. They explain what it was like saving Jaune, and that they will help if they can. Pyrrha points out that the reason Weiss was keeping dream versions of Ruby and Yang locked away was to protect them, and Ruby comes to realize that Weiss truly cares about her. Yang and Blake also come to realizations, and they come up with an idea for Jaune to aid them in the dream. Shion reveals that Jaune, due to having been recently possessed, will still be seen that way by the Grimm, and thus ignored as long as he does not get too close. Shion approves of their plan, which will involve changing the dream so Weiss can confront the Grimm with what resistance she still retains. Despite approving, Shion warns them that it will be their last chance, and if they fail, Weiss will die.

Ruby and her allies return to the dream, but this time they fight off the White Fang attacking the train and allow it to reach the city. This makes Weiss change the dream, opening the walls so that the train may enter the inner city and proving to Ruby and the others that they really can change the dream by intervening.

Jaune, still invisible to Weiss' security and the influence of the Grimm, finds his way to one of the prisons for "Sillies" and tricks the guard known as "Dopy Klien" to get in. There he finds the place warm and inviting, as well as finds a yellow relic inside. He frees the "Sillies", including the dream versions of his teammates. He also frees dozens of child versions of Weiss, which represent the childhood feelings she locked away for being too "silly". These child-like representations begin spreading to the security, making them all carefree and rebel against the other security forces. However, as the "Sillies" begin to grow out of control and the Grimm begins to take them under its control, Negative Weiss herself arrives, using magic to transform the tower into a giant fighting robot version of her grandfather, Big Nicholas, and attack the invading forces. As Blake and Yang distract the robot, Ruby sneaks inside and uses a coin to get Yang and Blake inside.

They use the relic Jaune gave them to make their way back to the Grimm, but are once again halted by Negative Weiss and a warrior version of her father. Yang and Blake are captured and banished to the outskirts of the Empire. When Nega-Weiss overpowers Ruby and destroys the relic, she pretends to be captured as well when she actually speeds away with her Semblance. Unable to get past the Grimm without a relic, she meets back with Jaune, unaware that, from touching one of the Grimm's barbs, she has become infected with a new Nightmare.

Jaune leads Ruby to the train, where the Grimm cannot get in. Ruby laments that she thought she could help Weiss by setting her emotions and feelings free, but Jaune reminds her that growing up involves putting childish desires away. Ruby is distraught that she cannot save her friend, and hates herself for being unable to lead her team. The new Nightmare responds to these insecurities and takes hold.

Ruby wakes up in what appears to be the real world with Weiss safe. However, as more and more people from her life begin to arrive applauding her, Ruby realizes what is going on. As they all turn into dolls, Ruby weeps as she realizes she is dreaming and possessed as well. Ruby briefly connects with the true Weiss as their dreams intersect. Weiss thanks Ruby for freeing her childish emotions and reveals that Ruby can now move freely due to the Nightmare seeing her as possessed, as well as her deep down desire to be freed, even if Negative Weiss does not realize it.

Using his magic sword, Jaune is able to wake Ruby from her dream. Ruby realizes that, with her and the sword, they can make their way to the central tower again by changing the dream. They do so, and while Jaune and the "Sillies" fight back against the Grimm and security, Ruby confronts Negative Weiss, eager to free her. Negative Weiss overpowers Ruby and tries to destroy her, but is interrupted by Yang and Blake returning. Blake has voluntarily become possessed to allow her evil personality, "Negative Blake" to clash with Negative Weiss as equals. She leads the dream versions of the White Fang against Negative Weiss' security as she battles Nega-Weiss herself. Yang meets with Ruby, giving her another relic they found. As Yang distracts the Big Nicholas statue, Ruby makes her way back into the tower to face the Nightmare Grimm once and for all.

As she battles the Grimm, she realizes the change in her weapon symbolizes the fact that the Grimm is not what she is actually fighting, but is hiding in the shadows behind her. She manages to find the Grimm's true location and attack it, but it overpowers and restrains her. Something awakens inside of Ruby, and her dream side uses her Silver Eyes to destroy the Grimm, which Professor Ozpin notes has awakened the ability within her in the real world. The Grimm is destroyed, and Weiss is freed, with Negative Weiss going and Weiss' mind returning to her dream self.

However, Negative Blake is still wreaking havoc, and Ruby, Yang, and Weiss team up to stop her. Yang manages to snap Blake back to consciousness enough to split her from her Negative side. The Grimm takes full control of Negative Blake, allowing all of Team RWBY to team up and fight the Grimm, destroying it.

Ruby and her team inform Weiss what happened, much to her embarrassment. As the dream fades, they all wake up in the real world once more.

Ruby and Weiss reconcile, with Ruby writing a letter to her father about the things that happened. She later goes to bid Shion farewell. She then meets with Professor Ozpin, who asks if she still feels unworthy to be a leader. She humbly says that she is still unsure, but is optimistic she can become a great leader. Ozpin learns that Ruby cannot remember using her Silver Eyes in the dream, though he assures her that hidden power has been awakened. Ruby joins her team at a café, where she declares that she will be the best leader she can be.

Later on, Ruby participates in a food fight against Team JNPR just before the start of a new semester at Beacon.

Appearance[]

Ruby is a fair-skinned young girl with silver eyes and black hair, which fades into red tips. Her hair has been styled several ways but is usually short to shoulder-length. Her outfits consist of blacks, reds, and silvers. She usually always wears her signature red hood and cape, though she lacks it in Weiss' dream. She stands slightly over five feet tall.

Powers and Abilities[]

Ruby is an expert combatant, especially with her scythe Crescent Rose. She is capable of advanced martial arts, blade mastery, acrobatics, and defenses with it equipped. She is also a master marksman, able to snipe from close and long range with a variety of elemental Dust ammunition that allows her to fight with Fire, Ice, Lightning, Gravity, and more. However, she is overly reliant on her weapon and struggles without it.

Ruby possesses a Semblance, a power unique to her drawn from her soul. Her Semblance, called Petal Burst, allows her to transform her body into a mass of rose petals. In this lighter, less massive form, she is able to be nearly intangible and pass through objects, even splitting into several separate masses. She uses this with extreme speed to dodge and maneuver, and can even pass through people and small objects, and even gains limited flight. She has also been shown to use her extreme speed without transforming, moving faster than the eye can see.

Like all creatures with a soul, Ruby also possesses an Aura, a physical defense generated by her soul. This durable field is invisible except when it is overtaxed, where it flashes red. Her Aura defends her from attack and can even heal minor wounds, but if it takes too much damage it will become depleted and require time to return.

Ruby also possesses Silver Eyes, a rare trait passed down through generations. These have the ability to harm those who are made of or practice evil. Though her real world self does not yet know about the Silver Eys or how to harness them, her dream self utilized them to defeat the Nightmare possessing Weiss, which Professor Ozpin notes have unlocked that ability in Ruby's true self.

The version of Ruby in Weiss' dream seems to possess all the same abilities as her real world counterpart, as well as the ability to capably snowboard.
