Rudi Ulrich "Rudy" Gillen is a supporting protagonist in Naoki Urasawa's psychological thriller manga and anime series, Monster.
A respected criminologist that once studied alongside the high-reaching brain surgeon Kenzo Tenma, Rudy was (on his perspective) Tenma's rival, annoyed by his popularity and exceedingly good grades. Despite initially being antagonistic towards Tenma (without the doctor realizing it) as he planned to sell him out to the police to be arrested by the crimes he was framed for, Gillen has a change of heart once he discover Tenma was actually telling the truth the whole time, and becomes his ally in the investigation surrounnding the mysterious serial killer, Johan Liebert.
He is voiced by Takayuki Sugo in the original japanese dub, and by Derek Stephen Prince in English
Appearance[]
Gillen is a white, blond German man. He has a medium height, with a stocky build, and his features are quite square-life, with a prominent nose and ears and small, normally deadpan eyes.
His most common choice of attire are fancy suits with ties, particularly those of green and/or gray colors.
Biography[]
Past[]
Rudy was once a classmate of the brilliant neurosurgeon in training, Kenzo Tenma. The japanese's natural skills and friendliness, which made him both popular and very well in college, gave Gillen a feeling of jealousy, thinking Tenma looked down on him. One day, at a diffcult test, he knew he would not be able to properly do it, so he cheated with a little paper piece, only to realize he was being watched by Tenma with a dreadfully serious expression. Once the test was over, however, Tenma did not tell anyone, and Rudy passed, staying with the feeling that the doctor felt scorn at him.
With good grades, he became a criminologist, a very respected one, with unmatched skills to understand a cirminal's mind and thoughts, especializing in serial killers.
Monster[]
Rudy was approached by Tenma when the latter was on the run from the police because of the crimes of Johan Liebert, pinned on him. He helps his "friend" and hear his story, but secretly, not only does he not believe a single word, he is setting Tenma up for the police to aprehend. Later, in an interview with a serial killer called Peter Jurgens, Gillen is investigating the only victim of Jurgens not to follow the man's usual pattern, eventually finding out that the kill was asked of him by a friend. Further investigation proves said friend searched everything about Jurgens's life in order to manipulate him. Gillen comes to the conclusion it Tenma's "Johan".
Now believing his story, Rudy takes Tenma away from the meeting point where the police was ready for him, with the officers believing Tenma is holding him at gunpoint. Leading the doctor to a bus station where he can evade the police, Rudy communicates with a piece of paper. Before departing, Tenma tells Rudy that not only he never scorned him, and in fact wanted to be his friend while in college, but he himself also cheated in that test. Surprised, Rudy watches his (now actaully) friend disappear into the bus, dumbfounded about how he had misjudged him for years.
Rudy's next appearance is helping Doctor Reinchwein contact Tenma, by planting a message in the newspaper that he thinks only Tenma will get. But it gains the unwanted attention of Inspector Lunge, the main figure in the quest for Tenma. Rudy asks for Lunge's help, trying to convince him to believe Tenma's story. Lunge pretends to, but is actually dead set on his beliefs that Tenma is guilty. Before they depart, however, Gillen takes a moment to crictize Lunge's memorization method; his "finger typing" that allow him to photographically remember info given to him. He says that, as effective as it is, this method will always be subject to his own bias, unlike Gillen's signature tape recorder, indirectly calling him out in failing to see any other possibility other than Tenma being the true murderer
Later, Gillen comes back to help with recovering the memories of Nina Fortner, Johan Liebert's sister. Experienced in hypnotism, Rudy takes it upon himself to bring her memories back, engagin in hypnotic sessions alone with her in a room. Though Nina becomes quite agressive during these, but nevertheless, he is able to recover her memories about a children's book and the "Three Frogs". Later, Nina uses help from other characters to discover what those things truly mean.
When Johan's endgame is revealed to be on the town of Ruhenheim, where Franz Bonaparta, perpetator of the experiments behind Johan and Nina's existence, currently lives, Rudy accompains Nina to go there, while Tenma was already present. Finding survivors leaving the ongoing massacre, Rudy points them to the exit and where they can call the police. He accompains Nina to Bonaparta's empty cabin, where multiple paintings of Nina and her brother are all around the place. He tries to comfort her over that, but she gets through the trauma and goes on to the city.
In the final showdown, he is present to see Johan's final gambit and sadistic choice induced on Kenzo Tenma, as well as Johan being shot in the head. Upon the police getting on the scene, Gillen explained the situation, as Kenzo and Nina were too stunned to speak, and Kenzo was still wanted for murder. With this testimony of Gillen's, the situation was eventually deescalated, and as the Johan case came to a close Tenma was absolved of the accusations.
While details of Gillen's life prior to the Ruhenheim incident aren't given, it can be assumed he lived a fulfilling life in good terms with his allies from the case and continuing his sucessful career.
Another Monster[]
Gillen was interviewed by Werner Weber in her investigation about Johan, while he was on Paris. He is revealed to have written a book on Johan, that was a best seller across Europe.
In the interview, Gillen mentioned a theory about how he thought Johan wasn't the sole responsible person for the Kinderheim 511 massacre. He also says he'd not take the chance to interview Johan if he could, since he thinks he would be easily be manipulated by the psychopath.
