What do you know, Kamikoshi-san?! Could you keep your mouth shut about family stuff that has nothing to do with you?! She tried to protect me?! Hah! If she was trying to act like a good mother before she died, it's too late! If you think that does anything to make up for her religious fanaticism, the money problems, what happened with dad, or anything else, you're dead wrong!
~ Urumi's heroic breakdown in File 22: Toilet Paper Moon chapter of the light novel.

Runa Urumi (ウル ミルナ, Urumi Runa?) is a major character in the 2017 light novel Otherside Picnic. She once served as the main antagonist of File 11: 11: The Whispered Voice Requires Self-Responsibility, before acted as an On & Off anti-hero starting in Volume 6 onwards.

Urumi is the cult leader of her unidentified cult and has been a mystery live-streamer since middle school with a sick obsession for mass-brainwashing. She acquired the "Voice" ability from the enigmatic ASMR video known as the "Blue World" via a livestream, and uses it to brainwash her victims. Before their subsequent arrest, she and her cult members were Satsuki Uruma's devoted followers.

Later, Urumi and her cult members organise a plot to abduct Sorawo Kamikoshi and Toriko Nishina, but instead she takes Kozakura for the latter. However, the DS Lab director Yoichiro Migiwa and Toriko would thwart her ambitions, which led to the arrest of the remainder of her cultists and her imprisonment.

She subsequently atones for her mistakes in Chapter 6 and becomes an On & Off anti-heroic character, joining forces with Sorawo, Toriko, Kozakura, and Migiwa after the former recruits her for a funeral operation in Volume 7 as a way to put Uruma into rest.

Appearance[]

Urumi looks like a high school student while donning a cardigan and a sailor suit. Her lengthy hair was braided on the sides of her head and flowed in rings down her back.

Urumi has two stitches on either side of her cheekbones since Volume 6. In some chapters of the Light Novel between Volume 6 and 7, Urumi is sometimes seen wearing a mouth gag in order to prevent herself from using her Voice and unwittingly brainwash everyone around her.

Personality[]

Urumi oozes pride and confidence, and one of her undeniable qualities is her seductive voice thanks to the gift she gained from the Otherside, but Sorawo observes that she stutters.

Even though she has never seen Uruma, her fixation with her permeates the light novels. She will go to any lengths for her, to the point that it frequently borders on madness. She even went so far as to form a cult during the events of File 11, Volume 3, kidnap Kozakura and Sorawo (the cultists mistake her for Toriko), and attack the DS Lab with her cultists.

In spite of her rabid behaviour, however, Urumi is a person who is buried underneath layers of her own guilt, stemming from her neglectful family. She suffers from severe psychological trauma, as exhibited in File 22: Toilet Paper Moon, when it was revealed that her mother became an obsessive religious fanatic, as well as being devoted to Uruma before her death, compounding with the problems surrounding her father and her family, as a whole.

As a result, mere mentioning of her troubled family's past would be enough for Urumi to go into a mental breakdown, as she yelled at Sorawo once for mentioning it.

Background[]

Past[]

Not much is known more about her past. However, it is revealed from Urumi that she was born from a deeply troubled family, who were sinking low from financial debt. Matters would worsen when her mother devolved into being a religious fanatic, became more distant towards Urumi, and worshipped Uruma, as well as her father going into a difficulty of its own. It is assumed that Urumi developed a trauma upon her mother's death, and spitefully thought that she never cared for her own daughter's suffering.

Urumi has been a streamer since she was in middle school, in spite of her best efforts to attract attention, which she frequently failed at. She was about to give up when she stumbled onto a video called "Blue World" while viewing ASMR.

Urumi allegedly saw Uruma in the video and gave her a gift from the Blue World that enabled her to brainwash others into doing what she wanted. She had a highly twisted love affair with Uruma and thought that her life was supposed to be spent worshipping her.

Otherside Picnic[]

Ururmi would eventually create a cult that was devoted to Satsuki Uruma in a more twisted fixation to appease her delusions of grandeur, where she would later brainwash numerous individuals for her purposes. Later, she used her "Voice" ability to seduce unsuspecting people through one of her livestreams. Inside the DS Lab, she intends to attack Migiwa as well as Sorawo, Kozakura, and Toriko.

Later, she and her followers would assault the DS Lab, which had intended to target Sorawo, Toriko, Kozakura, and Migiwa. Migiwa managed to escape, but Sorawo and Kozakura were both taken hostage by Urumi and the cult. One of these aspects of the plot, however, partially failed when Kozakura was taken instead of Toriko, who they mistook for her.

Meanwhile, Toriko and subsequently Migiwa and the DS Lab members would try to stop Urumi's cultists and herself after learning of Sorawo and Kozakura's kidnapping. The strategy was deemed effective since Toriko would free Sorawo and Kozakura from Urumi's imprisonment despite their mental impairments, and Migiwa would detain Urumi and her cultists for interrogation.

In Volume 6, it is made known that Urumi underwent two facial sutures some time after being arrested, when Uruma ripped her jaw apart. During the process, however, because of the enticing effects of her power to "Voice" by just chatting to anybody, she was observed speaking in writing in front of Sorawo and even went far in attempting to gag her mouth to prevent it from happening. In spite of her previous acts, Sorawo asked her if she wanted to be friends with her, to which Sorawo reluctantly consented.

In Volume 7, Urumi would subsequently be one of the participants in Sorawo's funeral operation mission to deal with Satsuki Uruma, who had been stalking both Toriko and her ever since. However, upon seeing the apparition of Uruma, Urumi grew extremely furious over her being the cause of her mother's death and the main perpetrator behind Urumi's descent to madness. She would pass out, however, from ranting in front of the spirit.

Abilities[]

  • Voice - After seeing "Blue World" via a livestream, Urumi was able to receive the Voice, which she used to brainwash a number of people. Later, she uses it to organise a cult dedicated to Uruma and hunt down Sorawo and Toriko. After her redemption, because of its allure, it may still hypnotise others near to her, as it did when she tried to jot down some of her ideas during a talk with Sorawo.
