Rustbolt is a major Protagonist in the Plants vs. Zombies series. Rustbolt was a browncoat zombie turned into a robotic like zombie. He's a Brainy and Hearty class.
Background[]
It's unknown what his prior life was before becoming Rustbot. It was likely helping Dr. Zomboss as one of his pawns/minions. He was chased down by the plants as a brown coat and the hero beam ended up hitting a vending machine; Rustbot ran into the machine thus the two merged. This caused Rustbolt's skin to become literal armor and he gained superpowers from this incident.
Plant Missions[]
In Junkyard Ambush!, when Green Shadow, Solar Flare, and Spudow, were looking for a tire to replace Penny's old tire, Rustbolt suddenly attacked the Plant Heroes. They fought and, while Rustbolt originally seemed to be winning, Spudow used a giant magnet to weaken him, with Green Shadow and Solar Flare found the tire for Penny.
Zombie Missions[]
Rustbolt appeared in The Great Cave Raid alongside Super Brainz and Electric Boogaloo to find a hidden cave to use as a new underground lair for Dr. Zomboss. However, Spudow popped up the ground and attacked them. They fought and Spudow initially seemed to be winning until Super Brainz used his cape to tie his head to stop him from throwing explosive heads.
In Code Orange! Citron Invades!, Dr. Zomboss ordered Rustbolt, Brain Freeze, and Z-Mech to stop Citron, alongside Rose and Grass Knuckles from putting their flag on the moon. They fought until Z-Mech managed to defeat the Plant Heroes by kicking Citron off the moon, causing Grass Knuckles and Rose to rush off to help him.
Others[]
Rustbolt appeared in Nightcap's introduction comic strips with Immorticia and The Smash attacking a Peashooter, a Sunflower, and a Wall-nut. However, Nightcap appeared to rescue them by summoning his mushroom army to fight them.
Strategy[]
Rustbolt is mostly good for using sports zombies. He can use this to overwhelm the plant with his numerous sports zombies while also having them all buff each other simultaneously. This can be used to keep heroes such as Green Shadow and Grass Knuckles at bay.
Another strategy for Rustbolt is tricks. You can use tricks to gain the upper hand and boost your Paparazzi Zombie. The tricks can be used to debuff other plants or even boost your own zombies as well.
Strategies[]
- Superpowers:
- Signature: Shrink Ray - A Plant gets -3. Draw a card.
- Other:
- Heroic Health - Heal your Hero for 6.
- Cut Down to Size - Destroy a Plant that has 5 or more.
- Rock Wall - A Zombie gets +5.
- Boss Fights:
- Plant Mission 02: Junkyard Ambush!
- Plant Mission 20: No Joke at the Junkyard
- Plant Mission 23: A Toaster Full of Trouble!
- Plant Mission 39: Rustbolt's Revenge!
- Battle Area: Junkyard
Trivia[]
- According to in-game text, he got his armor from a junkyard, as in his intro comic, he was chased by plants (2 Peashooters, a Carrotillery and a Cabbage-Pult) to the junkyard up until a vending machine nearby was struck by the hero laser, which in turn morphed with him.
- He poses in the way similar to an Octo Zombie, a Troglobite, an Arcade Zombie, a Jurassic Bully and a Jurassic Rockpuncher in Plants vs. Zombies 2, despite not having a body structure or build related to any of the five.
- Randomly during his idle animation, a spatula appears from his right arm. When this happens, he will look at the spatula and then his faceplate will open. He notices this, looks at the player, and then closes his helmet and retracts the spatula.
- Prior to the Galactic Gardens update, a toaster appeared from his left arm, although it didn't do anything but produce some bubbles. However, he would use the toaster as part of his super-block animation. The toaster was replaced by a bubble blower after the Galactic Gardens update. Rustbolt using the toaster to shield himself may be a subtle reference to "Protect me, cone!", a meme with roots in the popular comedy webseries Red vs. Blue, where Dexter Grif (the quotee) and Rustbolt are prominent characters of their respective teams in orange armor, using particular inanimate objects in an attempt to protect themselves. Coincidentally, Rustbolt is also associated with cones, as seen by his Hearty class (whose icon is a roadcone) and his access to Conehead.
- He has the same battle theme as Professor Brainstorm and Z-Mech.
- Coincidentally, they are all technology-related heroes that lack Amphibious zombies in their classes and their signature superpowers are all in the science tribe.
- Out of the three, Rustbolt is the only one that doesn't lead the Crazy class.
- Impfinity, The Smash, Rustbolt and Electric Boogaloo are the only ones that can be chosen as starter heroes.
- Rustbolt is offered as the third alongside The Smash only if Electric Boogaloo is chosen as the second.
- Currently, Rustbolt has access to the highest number of tricks in the game, at 23 cards.
- He also has access to the highest number of sport cards.
- Rustbolt was heavily inspired by Iron Man.
