Ryota Suzui is the tritagonist and the male protagonist from Kakegurui. He is a former housepet, whom he became after losing to Mary Saotome in a gambling match. However, thanks to Yumeko Jabami, Ryota's debt was repaid after she gave him money as thanks, becoming her first friend in Hyakkaou Private Academy.
He is voiced by Tatsuya Tokutake and Griffin Burns in the original Japanese version and English dub respectively. While in live-action, he's portrayed by Mahiro Takasugi. In Sentai English dub, he is voiced by Adam Gibbs.
Description[]
Ryota is a boy relegated to house pet status by his inability to pay a sufficiently high "donation" to the Student Council, primarily kept under Mary's thumb after losing multiple poker games to her. He initially plans to drop out after Yumeko defeats her and is shocked when Yumeko splits her winnings with him, allowing him to buy himself out of debt - even though he'd been the linchpin of Mary's cheat during their match. Now, he's pretty much (given Yumeko's eccentricities) the closest thing she has to a best friend, and often tries (unsuccessfully) to keep her from getting in over her head.
Appearance[]
Ryota is an Caucasian young boy who has messy brown hair and matching brown eyes. He wears red uniform with cuffs and collar lined with black trim and accompanied with gold buttons for decoration. Ryota also wears a black tie.
Personality[]
Ryota is a kind and friendly person, although not necessarily outspoken or reserved. Throughout the series, he's shown to be timid, rarely ever showing any form of confidence. After meeting and befriending Yumeko Jabami, however, his self-confidence slowly grows. Despite his reluctant personality, he's very level-headed and rarely holds grudges against other people. Ryota also cares a lot about Yumeko and worries something might happen to her due to her risk-taking nature.

- Ryota is the only character in the series to be explicitly stated to be right-handed.
- Ryota tends to be one of the most level-headed characters in the series, serving as the cautious foil to most of the other members of the cast's unpredictable, obsessive natures.
- Arguably, he's the sanest character in the story. Being against Kirari's corruption of the school extorting students and abusing those who don't comply or lose gambles.
- His English voice actor, Griffin Burns, is known for also voicing Tartaglia in Genshin Impact, the Devilman in Devilman, and Vinegar Doppio in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind.
- His actor in the live-action drama, Mahiro Takasugi, also plays Mitsuzane Kureshima from Kamen Rider Ryugen/Kamen Rider Zangetsu Shin (II)/Mitchy/Kamen Rider Ryugen Yomi.
