~ Ryusui Nanami |
Ryusui Nanami is a major character in the manga and anime series Dr. Stone. He is introduced during the Age of Exploration arc when he's depetrified by Senku and the Kingdom of Science when they need someone with navigational skills to pilot their ship across to the other side of the world.
Accompanied by his devoted butler Francois, he accepted the Kingdom of Science's task and became the ship captain of the Perseus, and later guided Senku and the rest of the Kingdom to the source of the petrification. His proficiency in sea and air navigation renders him invaluable as one of the Five Wise Commanders. Additionally, he holds a position within the Crafting and Development Team.
In Japanese, he is voiced by Ryōta Suzuki and in English, he is voiced by Clifford Chapin, best known for voicing Katuski Bakugo in the English dub of My Hero Academia.
Biography[]
Pre-Stone World[]
Prior to the Petrification Event, Ryusui held the position of Heir to the Nanami Conglomerate and was known for his impressive sailing skills. He enjoyed a life of wealth and luxury, often characterized by extravagance. He had a reputation as a self-indulgent playboy, frequently seen in the company of beautiful women, driving exotic sports cars, and indulging in excessive parties.
Despite his expertise in sailing, which made him the most skilled in this field, Ryusui's personality was commonly perceived as that of a spoiled and pampered rich individual who expected others to cater to his desires. This perception led some, like Minami, to initially resist the idea of reviving him. Minami believed that his behavior and attitude didn't align with the values necessary for survival in the new world. Interestingly, upon his revival, Ryusui initially displayed traits that seemed to confirm this perception, including demanding worship and asserting himself as the leader of the emerging new world.
Journey to Treasure Island[]
Ryusui's statue was discovered by the Kingdom of Science, with Minami initially cautioning against his revival due to concerns about his personality. Despite these reservations, Senku decided to depetrify Ryusui, recognizing the value of his captaincy skills. Ryusui quickly proved his worth in the Stone World. He accurately predicted an incoming storm, showcasing his understanding of the environment. Additionally, he discussed the necessity of obtaining oil to create a motorboat, an essential development for the group's goals.
One notable contribution Ryusui made was the introduction of currency to the Stone World. However, he became increasingly disturbed when Senku used this currency as a means of manipulation to further his own plans. Throughout his time in the Stone World, Ryusui participated in various scientific projects and activities. These included the creation of a hot air balloon, cameras, and radar. He was an active member of the Kingdom of Science, playing a crucial role in its endeavors. Ryusui also took part in the construction of the Perseus, a significant project for the Kingdom of Science that held great importance for their future plans to depetrify all of humanity.
In the "Treasure Island Arc", he was petrified for trespassing by the natives of Treasure Island, but was later revived. He played a crucial role in rescue missions, helping to locate petrified individuals and contributing to the development of oxygen tanks and scuba gear. During this arc, Ryusui witnessed the revival of Moz and Hyoga. He actively engaged in battles, demonstrating his willingness to take part in the Kingdom of Science's endeavors.
Personality[]
While he may come across as arrogant and driven by greed, these characteristics have driven Ryusui to remarkable success in the pre-Stone World era. His ambition and relentless pursuit of self-improvement, coupled with a strong work ethic, led to his achievements in shipbuilding and beyond. Senku recognizes that Ryusui's ambition can be harnessed for the Kingdom of Science's benefit, as it extends not only to personal gain but also to motivating and pushing those around him.
Despite his reputation as a party-loving playboy, Ryusui possesses a unique perspective on beauty. He genuinely believes that all people, regardless of age or gender, possess their own kind of beauty. This inclusive view extends to a desire to protect people from sadness, especially women. Ryusui shares Senku's vision of rebuilding society and creating a better world for everyone.
His selflessness and care for his comrades are evident in his actions. He was initially angered by Suika stowing away on a perilous voyage, yet he later risked his own safety to protect her from the petrification process. He readily acknowledges his own flaws and readily praises others, such as Suika, making her feel like a valued member of the Kingdom of Science. His unwavering faith in his fellow comrades is another defining trait, as he believes that they will fearlessly pursue any plan that requires their collective effort.
