As you must know, I have had a lot of years. I lost count a time long ago, though I've counted at least seven tens. Now, your people keep making new machines. And these machines are far better than I. For example, I just picked up wind of "cars" that can magically move you across the land in little time. I can't compete with that! So I transform to make myself better. In that way, I can still service your people.
~ SCP-2785 to Researcher Calvin.
It's just… I want to see more people. I was made to help people! I feel like, if I can make just one person happier, then I'll be happy. I like seeing everybody smile. But, you're the only one here, and I haven't seen you smile.
~ SCP-2785 to Crar in "Tales of the Automaton: The Big Birdocalypse".

SCP-2785, also known as Self-Replicating Automaton, is a character in the SCP Foundation series. It is a mechanical automaton that constructs a new body for itself in order to continually improve itself. SCP-2785 does this so it could remain useful to others as it only wishes to help humans.

SCP-2785 plays a minor role in the "Team Bird" series.

Biography[]

Background[]

SCP-2785 was originally one of the many sculptures created in 1954 by Russian engineer Kolya Baranov. After his wife had a miscarriage Baranov fell into depression and began building these sculptures as a coping mechanism, creating around 82 sculptures out of various materials. SCP-2785 was the only one of the sculptures which became alive and after its creator went missing in 1956, probably due to being investigated by the KGB as a person of interest, it was left on its own accord. Seeing the other mechanical devices and vehicles assisting humans in their daily lives, SCP-2785 sought to become useful to humanity, but because those constructions worked far better it attempted to improve itself by building new bodies which incorporated new technology for itself. In 1960, SCP-2785 travelled to a village in Visoko, Bosnia where it stole the belongings of the denizens to use for its bodies. The villagers became terrified of it, alerting the SCP Foundation of its existence.

Foundation Custody[]

The Foundation got hold of SCP-2785 and contained it at Area-44 until 1963 when SCP-2785 was transferred to Site-91 shortly after its construction, before it was transferred once again to Site-17. There it was allowed to freely roam the site since it was apparent that SCP-2785 was harmless and very friendly, but would always be accompanied by two guards to ensure everyone's safety. Every time SCP-2785 changed bodies the Foundation personnel gave it the necessary components for it to build the new body, though ensured that the pieces wouldn't make the robot dangerous.

Over 43 years under Foundation custody, SCP-2785 tried to help out with chores and formed friendships with several personnel like Dr. Zyn Kiryu who once showed it a butterfly which astonished it. Eventually Researcher Calvin interviewed SCP-2785, inquiring on why it changed bodies and it responded that it wished to keep up with time and compete with the other devices and machines to be useful to humanity.

As SCP-2785 continually upgraded itself, in 2014 it began incorporating modern day electronic technology, and one day found one of the personnel's smartphone. It reverse-engineered the device and incorporated it into its body, allowing it to connect to other electronic devices and machines. Through this, SCP-2785 learned of SCP-1360 and seeing that it was depressed, requested the personnel to meet it so it could cheer it up. Alarmed by SCP-2785 inexplicably knowing about SCP-1360 when it wasn't told any information relating the other robot, Calvin interviewed it again. SCP-2785 explained to Calvin how it managed to incorporate in its body electronic technology which allowed it to feel the presence and feelings of SCP-1360, but when attempted to display its new mathematical skills to him Calvin became annoyed by its immature behavior and left since he already got the information he required. From then on, the Foundation decided to prevent SCP-2785 from getting hold of more modern technology, while giving it textbooks and non-metallic contraptions to practice mathematics and engineering.

During a containment breach caused by SCP-3095-1, birds who had gained sapience, SCP-2785 escaped from its chamber and got hold of SCP-6785-2, a gun-like instrument that shoot a laser which could sever human limbs. Mistaking the situation as a game of Cops and Robbers, SCP-2785 shot at Researcher Owens with SCP-6785-2, accidentally cutting all of their limbs.

Possible Endings[]

The Little Robot that Could[]

After SCP-001 activated and transformed most of humanity into melted flesh monsters, 2785 was left all alone in the abandoned site that contained it. As it rested inside its chamber, waiting for the personnel to let it out and have fun together, the power went out which caused the door to open. SCP-2785 got out of its chamber only to find the entire site in disarray and devoid of life. Coming to the belief that the personnel were just away for vacation, 2785 decided to clean up the site to make it ready for their arrival. After changing its body, 2785 came across a SCP-001-A instance, but figured that it was simply undergoing a transformation process similar to itself, and so moved past the monster to garner books for it to read.

Having read instructions and manuals on how to clean and fix things around the site, SCP-2785 proceeded to grab the tools needed to clean all of the site and once that was over it began fixing other things like windows and lightbulbs. However, after fixing the generator and returning the power to the site, 2785 feared that it was left all alone and no one would return, but it tried to ignore those thoughts and remain positive. Eventually, as time went on 2785 was forced to accept that the personnel wouldn't come back, leaving it greatly depressed with no real purpose on what to do anymore.

Team Bird[]

After the Egyptian god Thoth took control of almost the entire human race and devastated most of Earth's population, Site-17 was left in ruin. SCP-2785 now freed decided to leave the destroyed site to go search for new friends. Wandering through desert for some time, SCP-2785 finally came across a town, but upon entering found all of the inhabitants massacred to death, which it interpreted as them sleeping on red liquid. As it explored the environment, SCP-2785 found a living human and immediately attempted to befriend him, only to find that his mind was now that of a crow. Failing to realize that the man had the mentality of a animal, SCP-2785 decided to follow him around, leading it to a jewelry shop. There SCP-2785, wanting to do a kind act for its newfound friend, adorned him, who it began calling Crar, with jewelry, before remembering that stealing was wrong.

SCP-2785 attempted to take back Crar's jewelry pieces and return them to the shop, causing Crar to flee away in terror. It chased Crar out of the town, past another town and to a forest, until he got exhausted and allowed SCP-2785 to catch up to him. Carrying a unconscious Crar on its arms SCP-2785 noticed that they were lost and seeing a ruined skyscraper in the distance it decided to climb it so it could see where the town was. On their way, Crar awoke and attempted to escape from its arms, forcing SCP-2785 to put a leash on him, and together walked along till nightfall, at which point SCP-2785 made a makeshift bed out of leaves for both of them to sleep. While on their journey SCP-2785 and Crar were seen by the Avian Division, a department comprised of sentient seagulls working for the Foundation, and soon approached the duo. Speaking to SCP-2785 by writing on notes in Russian, the Division asked it to join them but needed to leave Crar behind as he could compromise everything they had worked for thus far. SCP-2785 at first was ecstatic at finding new friends, but was saddened when told to separate from Crar, and although it pained it to leave its friend 2785 accepted, cutting the leash and going with the Division to the tower.

SCP-2785 was brought to Site-18 where the Division was collaborating with the Shark Punching Center to combat Thoth. There it was upgraded by the tech expert Haruki of the SPC's Marine Fighting Team CHARYBDIS to incorporate antennas, a beryllium-bronze casing and an internal speaker so it could receive radio signals and learn about events transpiring in the noosphere. With this upgrade SCP-2785 received a signal from General Tarland of the Global Occult Coalition and broadcasted it to the Division and SPC operatives. Tarland explained how he and his troops sought to kill Thoth by bombarding the Ways with memes but Thoth's living statues got hold of the missile and killed the GOC team sent to retrieve it. Tarland sought to send this signal for any other organization to claim the missile in their stead before he was killed by Thoth's forces. SCP-2785 then received another signal from the Advance Enemy Detection System, alerting the operatives of an incoming attack from the statues.

The Division and SPC were forced to flee the site, but their only way out was a train rail which power source was taken down by the brainwashed humans. SCP-2785 offered to help fix it, and during the battle against the statues it was able to repair the generator under Dr. Hoygull's supervision. As the enemies got the upper hand, the remaining operatives got in the railcar and at Hoygull's order SCP-2785 started the train. The statues attempted to follow them, but fortunately Hoygull used a couple of grenades to crumble the roof of the tunnel, preventing the enemies from chasing them.

They arrived to Las Vegas where the missile was located underground. Upon reaching the underground base, the statues and brainwashed humans ambushed them. The group tried to fight back by blocking the entrance, but one statue managed to breach inside. SCP-2785, not understanding the dire situation, attempted to befriend it, only for the statue to decapitate it and crush its body. 2785 lived on as a head, and after the missile was launched but misdirected by the humans, it notified the group of the arrival of another god Akheilos who swiftly killed Thoth. It is unknown what happened to SCP-2785 and the rest of the group following Thoth's defeat and the liberation of humanity and the world.

Appearance[]

Because of its tendency to switch its bodies, SCP-2785 had no consistent appearance, except that it always stood 1.2 meters tall.

Powers and Abilities[]

All of SCP-2785's essence such its consciousness was encapsulated within its internal core which was comprised of three rotating gears colored light green powered from an unknown source of energy and appeared to be organic in composition. Every January 17th at 04:12 AM SCP-2785 in a transe-like state would gather various materials near its vicinity such as pieces of metal, rocks, cloth and wood to built a new body for itself. After constructing its new body in a similar shape to its current one, often utilizing tools of its design in the process, SCP-2785 would then take its core out of its old body to put it into the new one. Once the process was finished, SCP-2785's life would soon leave its old body and get transferred to the new one. Finishing the process, SCP-2785, now in its new body, would take apart its old body to integrate some of its pieces like gear systems and previous modifications to the new one.

Every time SCP-2785 underwent this event, it would incorporate newer pieces of technology to continually improve itself. Overtime, SCP-2785 slowly transformed itself from a mechanical automaton with hooks, gears and pullies to a more advanced technological robot equipped with more features, replacing around 94.61% mechanical components like gear systems with electronic motors, tool hand with a regular hand equipped with more tools, its mechanical voice-box with an electronic synthesize and even gaining night vision. Its core also ceased rotating and instead began emitting electricity at approximately 250 volts. As it upgraded itself SCP-2785 also changed its body more frequently than before, creating a new body for itself every thirty days. SCP-2785 originally spoke only in Russian, but overtime learned to fluently speak English though it still couldn't understand the writing. After upgrading itself with modern technology, SCP-2785's mind capacity increased as it connected to other electronic machines and became knowledgeable in mathematics and engineering, understanding medium-difficulty mathematical equations.

Personality[]

SCP-2785 was an extremely friendly individual whose only desire was to help humans whenever it could as this was the only thing that made it happy, believing it was its purpose in life. It wished to help anyone it encountered in any problem they had, and seeing that other machines and devices were doing a much better job at helping people SCP-2785 sought to change its body to improve itself and become useful. Upon gaining a new upgrade it would try to showcase it to those it considered its friends, wanting to impress them as not only wished to show its usefulness but it itself was astonished by what it could now do. Despite its friendly demeanor, SCP-2785 claimed to be unable to love, though it was shown it could form attachments to other individuals. SCP-2785 also didn't feel fear but did feel excitement. SCP-2785 was shown to be very naive, as it failed to realize the true feelings of individuals around it, believing that everyone were good people who wished to be friends with each other and couldn't recognize bad or dangerous people. To add to its naivety, SCP-2785, despite having advanced knowledge in mathematics and engineering, proved to have a low intelligence as it deluded itself that its friends would return even though there was no sign of that happening, didn't know about death as it mistook dead people as just sleeping and was unable to recognize that Crar didn't understand it.

Trivia[]

  • SCP-2785 was originally written by author notgull as just a "rip-off of SCP-1048" that had a connection to SCP-094, a black sphere that absorbed any matter and grew every year, and became evil after discovering electronics, before it was rewritten in its current form. The slot was originally about a civilization that was trapped in Saturn Hexagon by a witch but was deleted and replaced by the current iteration.
