The people of this world called for aid. We answered. We are The Salamanders. We shield the helpless.
~ Sa'kan defiantly introducing himself to the Szeras.
Danica: What kind of Angel of Death are you!?
Sa'kan: The kind that cannot tell children they will die tonight in their fallen city. The kind that will fight that fate to the last of his breath.
~ Sa'kan's refusal to forsake the refugees and his drive to protect them no matter what.

Sa'kan is one of the main protagonists of Pariah Nexus, an animated series set within the Warhammer 40k universe and its sequel The Tithes. An Astartes of the Imperium of Man, Sa'kan is a Space Marine serving in the XVIIIth Legion the Salamanders. Sent to provide backup to the Ultramarines during a war against the Necrons on the planet Paradyce, Sa'kan's ship crashes leaving him the only survivor of his unit. He finds the world to be lifeless and desolate possibly beyond repair, yet among the ruins, manages to find civilians who escaped the carnage. A paragon of compassion and selflessness, he takes it upon himself ensure they get off world safely. He perseveres until they are able to escape to what he believes to be safety (losing an arm in the process and witnessing the death of Sister Danica of the Adepta Sororitas). He remains on the planet to continue fighting the Necron Incursion. Unknown to him, the civilians were summarily executed upon encountering Imperial Guard troops, who assumed they were reanimated human corpses the Necrons had been using in wave attacks.

Sa'kan returned as one of the two stars of Episode 1 of The Tithes, where he fights to retrieve the genetic legacy of several fallen Ultramarines from Necron defilement alongside the Ultramarine Apothecary Brutus. Though they are able to retrieve the legacies, Brutus is ultimately forced to sacrifice himself to allow Sa'Kan to escape with the gene-seed. It is notable that Brutus came to trust Sa'kan enough to entrust an Ultramarine legacy to a Salamander, despite his initial doubts.

He was voiced by James Phoon.

Personality[]

While the Warhammer 40k universe has a notable lack of truly heroic characters, the Salamander Legion are the exception to this rule. Salamanders are beings of great compassion, and are known as the most affable and heroic of the Space Marine chapters. Similar to his brothers, Sa'kan has an intense drive to do what's right and will protect innocent lives no matter what it takes to do so. He acknowledges his appearance is fearsome, yet he is through and through a shining example of selflessness and humanity, seen as ironic by others such as Sister Danica.

While almost a literal knight in shining armor, Sa'kan's will to protect the innocent will swiftly lead into brutal efficiency as a warrior should any threat come to those under his care, and this extends to his own allies. When Danica wanted to kill the refugees on sight for simply being what they were, Sa'kan immediately intervened and talked her out of it, but was wholly willing to gun her down if the situation called for it. Soft spoken, Sa'kan does not reject his humanity but instead embraces it, and shows a tender side towards children.

Trivia[]

  • Sa'kan losing function of his third lung and extra heart that all Space Marines are outfitted with is to symbolize his humanity.
  • Sa'kan loses an arm in Pariah Nexus, and is still without a replacement during The Tithes, which inhibits his ability to reload his bolt-pistol, forcing him to pass his empty weapon to Brutus to be reloaded while fighting Necrons.
