The Salamanders are major protagonists in Warhammer 40k and are universally seen as the most heroic and compassionate of all the Astartes Legions. The XVIIIth Legion of the Imperium of Man, they were originally known as the Dragon Warriors and are lead by their Primarch Vulkan and specialize in smithing, fire weaponry and civilian rescue. One of the 20 original First Foundings, the Salamanders serve as a beacon of hope and kindness in the otherwise bleak, brutal grimdark of the 40th millennium. Tragically, the Salamanders suffered unimaginable losses during the Horus Heresy, falling victim to the Drop Site Massacre. Their numbers extremely reduced, they nonetheless remain steadfast loyalists and paragons of courage and kindness.
Unlike many Adeptus Astartes Chapters, the Salamanders demonstrate exceptional concern for civilian lives, prioritizing the protection of the Emperor's innocent subjects above all else. This compassionate outlook stems from their unique bond with the people of Nocturne, as they maintain ongoing relationships with their mortal families and communities following their transformation into Space Marines.
Salamanders often reside within their Chapter's bastions, integrated into Nocturne's seven tribal Sanctuary Cities, when not required at the fortress-monastery on Prometheus. They are regarded as leaders and protectors within these communities. Both the Salamanders and the Nocturnean populace are devoted to a unique interpretation of the Imperial Cult, known as the Promethean Cult.
The tale of Vulkan's reunion with the Emperor, a prominent narrative from the Great Crusade, persists throughout the Imperium as the Promethean Opus. While the historical accuracy of this account remains uncertain and arguably irrelevant, the Salamanders' enduring ten-millennia legacy of strength, honor, and unwavering resolve stands as a testament to their Primarch's ideals, a beacon in the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium.
Their successor Chapters are, among others, the Dark Krakens, the Dragonspears, and Black Dragons.

The Salamanders hail from the Death World of Nocturne, a fiercely active volcanic world. Due to their gene-seed as well as the ferocious world they call home, Salamanders have exceptionally dark, almost ash colored skin and burning red eyes. While this gives them a fearsome appearance, they are gentle giants, until the call to battle arises at which point they became the Emperor's Angels of Death just as all Astartes. As the sons of Vulkan, they are all taught from a very early age the secrets of the forge and are all master blacksmiths, able to build their own, repair and maintain their weapons and power armors. Their combat specialty is powerful melee weapons as well as fire weaponry, known for leaving behind flames and ashes in their awake against their enemies. Unique to their Legion, compared to other Astartes the Salamanders are uncharacteristically compassionate and kind to the civilians of the Imperium. Protecting them is always a Salamander's top priority, and they will go to extreme lengths to ensure their safety, and their rage and might becomes unstoppable and truly terrifying should they witness cruelty or malice aimed directly at the innocent. This heroic trait of selflessness is sometimes found very odd by others, who struggle to comprehend how someone who was by design bred for combat and dealing death can be so kind and caring towards mere mortals. Regardless if civilians follow their ways or not, they will protect them to their last breath without hesitation.
Salamanders are one of the exceedingly few Legions who are not only able to, but encouraged to keep in contact with their human families, as it helps strengthen the values they hold dear.
