Owens silent as Hopper asks him to convince him he's wrong, while realizing the Chief is right on he has been fulfilling his own promises on keeping the crimes committed by the lab a secret.

The next day, Owens listens to Joyce explain Will being affected a shadow monster from the Upside Down.

Owens and his colleagues unsure how to answer Joyce's questions as they don't know what's wrong with Will.
Owens checking up on Hopper after he had been cleaned off the Upside Down's toxic chemicals.
After Hopper confirms he's good, Owens says he wants him to come with him as he wants to show him something.

Looking at the gate, Owens explains to Hopper how living organisms develop defensive mechanisms to survive.

Owens asking Will if he remembers Mike.
Owens hearing Will is able to recognize Mike.
"Do you remember anything about last night?"
(Will: "I remember they hurt me.") "You mean the doctors?"
(Will: "No. The soldiers.") "The soldiers hurt you?"
Owens hearing Will warn that the lab's personnel shouldn't have burnt the tunnel, saying it upset "him".
"I want to try something."
"It's gonna seem odd, but I think it's really gonna help us understand what's going on."
Owens, Joyce, and Hopper talking in private in a hallway.
"Our best guess right now is it's some kind of virus which is causing this neurological disorder. Now, when..when a typical virus attaches itself to its host, it duplicates."
"A virus is alive. It has an intelligence."
"The infected host seems to be communicating."
"It has some sort of hive intelligence."
"And it's connecting all the hosts."-Owens describing how Will and every living thing in the Upside Down are a part of a hive mind.
Owens promising to run some more tests in order to find a way to cure Will of the shadow monster's possession of him.
Owens hearing Joyce worry what will happen if the shadow monster completely takes control over her son's mind and body.
Owens unsure how to answer Joyce's questions.
Owens, Joyce, and Hopper pondering and worrying what will happen to Will if they don't free him from the shadow monster's influence.
Later, Owens and his scientists have a meeting.

"I don't hear any suggestions."
Owens hearing one of his colleagues propose they need to proceed with burning the tunnels.
"And if it kills the boy?"
Owens glancing at his colleague who points out whether or not burning the tunnels kills Will, they can't let them reach Hawkins.
Owens and his team in deep thought.
(Scientist: "Where are you going?") "I'm gonna think."
Owens pondering on what to do.
Later, Owens, Hopper, Joyce, and Mike watch Will observe photographs of his drawn map.
Owens watching Will move around to scan his map.
Owens seeing Will point to a location on his map.
Owens asking Will what's at the location he pointed to.

Owens worried when he sees Bob accidentally causing a broomstick to fall down when he comes out of hiding.

On the night of March 22, 1986, Owens is woken up by his wife.

Owens looking at El, worried for her when she finds who he's working with.
Owens watching El reunite with her captor and father figure, Martin Brenner.
Owens hearing El's heart rate is at 120 BPM after Brenner forcefully puts her in the Nina tank.
"We shouldn't have just thrown her in like that."
Owens worried for El as Brenner confidently says she's experience her lost memories.
Later, Owens asks Brenner how El is doing.
Owens telling Brenner they're running out of time.
Owens hearing Brenner remark that El will have to recover her memories faster.
Owens hearing El's going into cardiac arrest.
Owens telling Brenner to pull El out of the tank and the stimulation.
Owens witnessing El wake up from her heart attack after being brought out of the Nina Project.
Owens, Brenner, and two other doctors surrounding El.
Owens watching El run off after she angrily smacks Brenner in the face with an automated external defibrillator.
Watching Eleven regain her memories in Nina, Owens remarks they should tell her what they're up against, but Brenner reminds that they'll risk everything by doing so.
