Biography[]
Sam first appears in the season three episode “Twisted Sister”, when she shows up to her sister Angie’s house after leaving her husband Neil, due to her suspecting that he’s having an affair. She later reveals to Angie that she knows she’s an undercover cop thanks to their mum Marjorie telling her, which upsets Angie since it was supposed to be a secret. Sam later shows up to a pub following Angie while she is undercover investigating Rae Croft, when Angie notices Sam, she quietly tells her to leave. However, Sam is soon followed by Rae’s henchman Tony, who gets her licence plate information. Sam is later berated by Angie for almost blowing her cover, and possibly ruining the investigation since Angie had their encounter on tape. The following day, Angie finds out that Sam had taken her recording device, which she uses to try and find out if her husband is cheating on her. However, Sam is later kidnapped by Tony, and brought to Rae in front of Angie, with Tony accusing Sam of being a cop. However, Angie confesses that she is in fact a cop, and that Sam is her sister, Rae decides to take Sam hostage at gunpoint to force Angie to help Rae’s boyfriend Nick Marek break out of prison, otherwise she will kill Sam. Angie later arrives with Marek, and she and Rae send Sam and Marek to one another as part of a hostage exchange, but Angie then sends the signal to ambush Rae immediately after Sam reaches to Angie’s side, and Rae is arrested along with Marek. Angie then tries to explain the danger Sam put them both in, but Sam replies that she was just trying to help for once. Angie later tells Mac that Sam had returned to her husband.
In the season four episode “Into the Darkness”, Angie visits Sam at her place, Sam by now had split up from her husband for good, and Angie soon discovers that Sam has become addicted to heroin. Sam is soon confronted by Angie and Oscar Stone over her addiction, and agrees to try and get help after being frightened by Stone when he brings up Bill Hollister’s recent death by car-bombing. However, a couple of episodes later in “The Whisper Room”, Sam had not only resumed her heroin use, but is later confronted by Angie when Sam steals jewellery that was given to her by her nan, and sold it to get more drugs. Sam breaks down in tears and apologizes to Angie, who admits that she hates what Sam has become, but forces her to move in with her in order to try and force Sam into going cold turkey. While at Angie’s place, Sam goes through severe withdrawals while Angie is forced to watch, Angie later gets Stone to look after Sam when she needs to go to work, but Sam soon escapes from Angie's place. Angie and Stone then return to the shared house where Sam was staying, where they find her on the verge of death from a heroin overdose. Sam manages to survive, and is taken to hospital, but Stone tells Angie that he reported Sam for drug possession, angering Angie. When Sam regains conciousness, she is visited by Angie, but Sam is angry at her, believing that Angie was the one responsible for reporting her to the police over her drug use. Angie tries to speak to Sam and reason with her, but Sam refuses to listen and coldly tells Angie to leave. However, in the following episode "Feud", Angie tells Stone that she went to visit Sam, who now knows that Stone was the one that reported her, but she has forgiven him, even though Angie hasn't yet.
In the season five episode "Mule Train", while undercover investigating drug importer Troy Thorpe, Angie notices a photo of Sam hanging in a picture frame at Thorpe's house, becoming horrified as she realizes that Sam is Thorpe’s girlfriend and possibly a drug courier for Thorpe’s boss Daniel Tedesco, which is later confirmed on the day that Thorpe is expecting a new supply of drugs, and Sam is the one who arrives from the airport. Sam then meets with Marty Engle, unaware that he’s Angie’s informant, and Sam thinks he’s taking her to meet up with Thorpe, but Marty stops the van in the middle of a residential street, confusing Sam. Sam becomes shocked and terrified when she is suddenly confronted by Angie, who forces Sam to tell her where the drugs are, before handing Sam some money and a ticket to Spain, telling her that she needs to escape, otherwise she will go to jail. Seeing no other option, Sam takes Angie’s advice and returns to the airport, while Angie heads to Thorpe, who is arrested when Angie hands him the drugs. Sam later leaves the country while Angie tearfully watches Sam’s plane leave at the airport.
By season seven, Sam had been living in Singapore for a while, and is no longer using drugs, when she recieves a call from Angie to let her know that Thorpe had made a deal with Reg Masters in the Drug Squad to testify against Tedesco, and named Sam as a corroborative witness, Sam is asked by Angie to return to Australia to help corroborate Thorpe's testimony, but with the possibility of facing jail time, Sam refuses to come back as she had only just gotten her life back on track. However, she is later visited by Angie’s boss and boyfriend, Luke Harris, who tells Sam that Angie is under investigation by Internal Affairs, as a result of Masters accusing her of perverting the course of justice by helping Sam to escape during the original investigation against Thorpe. Realizing that Angie could go to jail because of her, Sam agrees to return with Australia with Harris and surrender herself in order to protect Angie. Angie is livid with Harris for this, as she told him not to force Sam to come back, but when Angie is reunited with Sam, she reassures her that it was entirely her decision, as she didn’t want Angie to go to jail for her. Sam later cooperates with Masters by confessing her involvement with Thorpe and Tedesco, and Harris convinces Masters to give Sam a deal that includes no jail time. Thorpe is later murdered in prison under Tedesco’s orders, but his testimony is kept as evidence, meaning that Sam is now needed to corroborate Thorpe’s statement to take down Tedesco, but Sam overhears about Thorpe’s murder when Sophie Novak contacts the forensic department, and fearing for her life, decides to flee. However, when she decides to call Angie to let her know about her decision, she is horrified to discover that Tedesco is with Angie and had taken her hostage at their family’s beach house, prompting Sam to rush back to Police HQ and informs Harris and Peter Church that Angie’s in danger, and Sam convinces Harris to let her go with them to rescue Angie, willing to risk her own life to save her sister from Tedesco. Sam soon reaches the beach house, with Church undercover as backup, while the rest of the unit prepare to break in from the back. Sam talks to Tedesco from outside while he is behind the front door of the house with Angie, and she tries to convince him to come outside so that they can talk, but Tedesco, suspicious of Sam’s motives, aims his gun at her and prepares to shoot, only for Angie to grab Tedesco’s arm and force him to shoot in the air. Sam, unable to see through the door, thinks that Tedesco had shot Angie, and frantically rushes to the entrance of the beach house, only to be accidently shot in the shoulder by Angie as she is struggling with Tedesco for the gun. After Tedesco is arrested, Angie rushes to Sam’s side as Masters calls for an ambulance for her. Luckily for Sam, the bullet wound only caused minor injuries, and she is seen recovering in hospital with Angie and Harris visiting her, the latter informing her that their deal stands, and she won’t go to jail, before leaving to allow Sam and Angie to spend some time together. Sam then playfully jokes to Angie how Harris’ methods to protect her was an act of love, and she can tell that Angie loves him too, pointing out that she is blushing during their conversation. Some time later, a fully recovered Sam attends Angie’s wedding to Harris, serving as one of Angie's bridesmaids.
By season eight, Sam had been doing volunteer work overseas in Angola for an unknown period of time, as well as remaining sober for over two years, she soon spends some time back in Australia visiting Angie and her son Josh, where she tells Angie that she’s going to stay for the long-term after one more final trip to Angola. A week later, Angie returns home with Josh, when she finds Sam mortally wounded in her living room. Sam tries to speak to Angie to warn her about something, but dies before she can finish what she is saying, devastating Angie. Angie later finds out that Sam died from a single stab wound, having been disemboweled, enraging Angie to the point that she single-handedly searches for Sam’s killers, while the rest of her unit track Sam’s movements prior to her death. Angie later discovers that when Sam was in Angola, she was working with an interpol officer named James Honey to help take down a South African-based crime lord named Kepler Vanderbijl, by working undercover as a diamond smuggler for Vanderbijl, bringing with her $5,000,000 worth of black-market diamonds to be used as evidence. However, Vanderbijl later discovers Sam’s deceit and murders Honey, whose headless torso is found near the Yarra, while Sam is stabbed, but somehow managed to make it to Angie’s place, where she is later found by Angie before dying. But Vanderbijl is also after Angie, seeking the missing diamonds that Sam stole from him. Angie eventually finds the diamonds at her family’s beach house, and after dealing with Vanderbijl's henchman Dirk and Andy (after they betray each other, resulting in Dirk's death), she later confronts Vanderbijl, where she coerces him into openly admitting to Sam’s murder, which Angie has recorded on a wire just moments before the rest of the unit arrives to arrest Vanderbijl, allowing Angie to avenge Sam’s death in the process. Despite arresting Vanderbijl, Angie still stuggles to deal with the loss of Sam for a while, as she begins to suffer from nightmares shortly after Sam's murder.
