| “ | Don't worry man, everything's going to be A-OK! | „ |
| ~ Sam's most famous quote. |
| “ | Parting with my friends was hard... But for them, the Colonel's death signalled the end of their journey and the beginning of a new life on the shores of Lake Baikal. For me, the loss became a threshold. Between the Order and my own life. Between duty and my dream to see Dad again. And, like Artyom before, I chose to pursue my wild dream. | „ |
| ~ Sam's other famous quote at the start of Sam's Story. |
Samuel Taylor, often known as Sam, is a major character in the Metro franchise. He is a supporting character in Metro 2035 and a major character in Metro Exodus. He is the titular main protagonist of Metro Exodus's DLC Sam's Story.
He is a member of the Spartan Rangers before he joins Artyom's team, the Aurora Crew, after finding out Hanza's deceit, onboard the Aurora armoured train as Colonel Miller's personal bodyguard and is a former member of the U.S. Marine. After the events of Exodus, Sam later leaves the Aurora Crew to visit Vladivostok, in hopes that he can locate his father again and reunite with him in San Diego, with the help of Tom, a fellow American and an arms dealer from Seattle. He later serves as the arch-enemy of Klim in his playable DLC.
In contrast to the more strategic and tactical Idiot, Sam's approach on missions are technically more direct and violent, which is reflected to his armoury of weapons.
Appearance[]
Sam is a middle-aged Caucasian man who has a scruffy beard, brown eyes, and brown hair that is tied within a ponytail.
Background[]
Past[]
Born in San Diego, California, Sam's father persuaded his son to join the United States Marine Corps before the war. Sam fought in the Marines and was stationed as a Marine Security Guard for the American embassy in Moscow, Russia.
He served in the Middle East and Afghanistan before being transported from war zone to war zone. Sam was in the Metro when World War III broke out, which spared him from the bombs, but soon after, many Russian survivors tried to lynch him for being an American. Miller intervened and persuaded Sam to join the Spartan Rangers, where he eventually rose to become the colonel's personal guard.
Metro 2035[]
He and everyone else in the Metro assumed Moscow was the sole city where humanity still existed 20 years later. Sam was injured shortly before the Red Line launched the battle for D6 and was unable to participate in the battle. Sam didn't allow anyone else push the colonel's wheelchair until he healed enough, and he kept close to him even after Andrew the Blacksmith created Miller a pair of prosthetic legs, implying that he blamed himself for Miller loosing his legs in the war.
Metro Exodus[]
Sam joined the newly formed Aurora Crew and departed Moscow when Artyom found life outside of the Metro, after escaping the traitorous Hanza. While Miller and the majority of the Spartans were first concerned about his allegiances, after learning that Russia was not controlled by NATO soldiers and that life existed outside of Moscow, he began to fantasise about going to the United States and seeing his father again.
He left not long after Miller's burial, after the Aurora crew had settled in Lake Baikal, to try to find a means to traverse the Pacific Ocean and return home.
Sam's Story[]
After Miller's death, Sam left the order to travel to Vladivostok in the hopes of finding a boat to cross the Pacific and return home. He was given Saul's van, which he drove until it broke down, at which point he was given a tractor, which he used to get to Vladivostok. He met a captain, known as Eduard Baranov, who showed him around the local submarine, but before he could investigate, he was kidnapped by locals, who took him to their commander, believing he was with the captain.
Sam befriends the group's leader, Tom, and because to the fact that they're both Americans, Tom gives him a trip home if he assists him. Because Tom is in command of the submarine, Sam accepts because he believes it is his greatest chance of returning home. He eventually locates and befriends the captain, who offers to assist and supply fuel to the submarine.
When Sam and later Baranov returns to Tom, the captain offers him the option of destroying the submarine. When Klim, Tom's right hand man, betrays Tom and seeks to take over the Submarine by inciting a mutiny against his crew, which he wants to use to nuke other nations, the showdown between Tom and the captain is interrupted. Sam battles his way to Klim, but despite being terribly hurt, Sam outfights him and kills him.
Betraying Tom[]
Baranov persuades Sam to blow up the submarine in order to prevent Tom from obtaining access to its nuclear weapons and maybe starting another nuclear war. Sam loses his method of getting to the United States, but he does not give up and continues to look for another route.
Betraying Baranov[]
Sam decides not to detonate the bomb on the submarine. Tom welcomes Sam aboard, tends to his injuries, and transports him to San Francisco. Sam then heads to San Diego to get his father, as promised.
