Sana Sunomiya is the overarching protagonist of the anime/manga series Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro.
She is a high school - later university - student who served as the "President" of the art club whom Senpai is a member of. The President is a serious, stern, and responsible girl, albeit with a habit of public nudity. Despite being semi-retired, she still manages the club's bureaucracy and logistics, eventually becoming enraged and starting a sort of feud with Gamo-chan, Yoshi, Sakura, and especially Nagatoro after they turned the club room into their hangout, although she recognizes the younger girl's role as Senpai's muse. Later in the story, she graduates and starts attending Tokyo University of the Arts.
She is voiced by Nana Mizuki in the Japanese version of the anime (who also voices Hinata Hyuga in the Naruto franchise, Lan Fan from Fullmetal Alchemist, Moka Akashiya from Rosario + Vampire and Saya Kisaragi in Blood-C), and by Justine Lee in the English version of the anime.
Appearance[]
Sana Sunomiya is a beautiful young woman with rather pale skin, very long (all the way down to her back) dark purple hair with ragged bangs, cool crimson eyes and (most of the time at least) a very cold, stoic expression, and a smile in her case to rarity. She is taller than every other woman in the entire series, as well as most men. Her most distinctive physical feature, however, is her highly curvaceous figure, led by her large breasts, often depicted in an exaggerated way, mainly for comedic effect.
When she was a high school student, she usually wore the standard school uniform consisting of a white button-up shirt (whose sleeves and collar she always kept buttoned), a red tie, and a long navy blue skirt complemented by tights and a pair of sneakers. However, in winter she wore a light brown sweater and sometimes a blue jacket. As a college student, Sana is mostly seen in a full body leather suit that tightly covers her body with a zipper in the front that she leaves unzipped on her chest, exposing her cleavage and part of her breasts.
Personality[]
Sana is a stoic, strict and disciplinary person who takes her passion for the arts very seriously. She has a habit of over-dramatization, particularly on the subject of art. As the Art Club President, she largely acts as a mentor and source of encouragement for Naoto, often teaching and advising him on his paintings, eventually leaving the Art Club in his hands and taking an interest in his artistic progress. She takes art very seriously and does not take someone disrespecting the arts lightly. Sana was furious when she found out that Nagatoro and her friends had set up a personal hangout from the art club, thinking Naoto was slacking off, and was adamant on shutting the Club down. After challenging and losing to Naoto in an art exhibition match by way of disqualification, she rescinded her intention and and recognized Nagatoro as the muse for Senpai's work, showing that she isn't above admitting her mistakes.
As an artist, Sana strongly believes that the source of great art is "love". This has consequently led her to support Naoto and Nagatoro's relationship, seeing Naoto's improvement in both art and character after meeting her. Although not quite as involved as her cousin Hana due to her currently being in college, she will still lend her hand to the pair when she is able. Sana greatly respects actions that have passion behind them and often prefers that someone prove their will and passion to her. If that person shows her enough determination, Sana will acknowledge their resolve and act accordingly, whether it be conceeding her ground or offering them a helping hand.
One of her more distinctive character traits is her absolute shamelessness and highly nonchalant approach to nudity, especially her own. This is firstly shown manifested through her art, particularly her fully nude self-portraits. However, she has also exposed herself on other occasions, making mention of "freeing herself in nature" andn once coming in naked to the Art Room to feel the air with her bare skin before graduating. Sana further elaborates on her passion for nudity on Chapter 112, where she expresses her belief that it is the source of human beauty, using the various classical art works that depict men and women in the nude as her reasoning. To that end, she is highly offended at those who would look at nudity as something lewd or impure, and is unafraid to challenge those who restrict her right to express herself or someone who in her view is disrespecting the artistic integrity of nudity.
Trivia[]
- The character is usually referenced only by her title, however, when she showed the disbandment form to Senpai, two kanji of her last name were clearly visible, while the third was partially covered with a balloon, implying her full surname could have been something like Sunomata, Sunokawa or Sunomiya, which is later revealed to be the case in Chapter 83.
- Sana's view of passion being synonymous with art has led her to create connections to seemingly unrelated activities, such as making bento and judo, with art. This connection is often not understood by those who are privy to her reasoning except for Hana and possibly Naoto.
- The knot tie that the President wears with her uniform is identical to the one Gamo-chan wore in Chapter 1, which was never seen again afterward.
- After being humiliated and forcibly paraded throughout the school wearing a skimpy bunny suit by Nagatoro and her friends, they start to associate her with a rabbit, even calling her "Bunny-Girl". This punishment backfired as Sana adopted the Bunny motif for herself, citing the feeling of humiliation having burst forth her creativity.
- The President is often described by fans as an exhibitionist, in part due to many of Nanashi's pre-serialization erotic works having similar themes. This may not be accurate in her case since exhibitionism formally refers to a sexual kink where people gain pleasure from exposing themselves or doing sexual acts in public. By contrast, Sana absolutely insists that her nudity is simply part of her artistic pursuits and is offended when people look at it as simply something lewd. Nagatoro does call her "horny" for it, but this is mostly due to her penchant for nudity when in front of Naoto.
- According to her character profile in the Official Fanbook her favourite food is Yukon Gold potato while she really hates junk food.
- When she was in school, Sana often walked completely naked inside the school in the middle of the night. This occured often enough to cause an urban legend to circulate within the school of the "Ghost of the Pale Woman" patrolling the halls at night.
