Hero Overview

I heard the sound of a woman's tears falling.
~ Sanji
Food is a gift from god. Spices are a gift from the devil. It looks like it was a bit too spicy for you.
~ Sanji.
Fine, Luffy... I give up... I'll be honest... What I want is... to go home... to the Sunny...!
~ Sanji admitting to Luffy he that he wants to return to Sunny.
My boss wouldn't have liked it. Fixated on the bygone grudge of my childhood days... He'd have been shocked at how small a man I'd become if he saw me at the death of my own blood. I won't live in a way that won't let me look him in the eye! I refused! I ran away from the Germa 13 years ago. Vinsmoke Sanji died at sea and that's what you wanted! So admit it! TELL ME YOU'RE NOT MY FATHER, VINSMOKE JUDGE! AND DON'T YOU DARE SHOW YOUR FACE TO US AGAIN!
~ Sanji to Judge as he officially disowned the Vinsmoke Family as his family and thrown his surname and status as a prince once again.
Light doesn't hold a candle to love!!
~ Sanji when blocking Kizaru's laserbeam.

Sanji, born as Vinsmoke Sanji, and also known as "Black Leg Sanji", is one of the main characters of the One Piece franchise. He is a pirate and the chef of the Straw Hat Pirates. He is the fifth member of the crew and the fourth to join.

He is the third son of the Vinsmoke Family, but he later renounced his title and disowned his family twice after leaving Germa 13 years ago and after Big Mom's treachery toward the Vinsmoke Family. He was raised by kindhearted mother Sora but was treated horribly by an abusive father who is his archenemy, Vinsmoke Judge. Since he was born at North Blue, Germa Kingdom, he is the first Straw Hat not to originate from East Blue. His dream is to find the rumored All Blue, which is where East Blue, West Blue, North Blue, and South Blue meet along with their wildlife, a chef's paradise.

His first bounty was 77,000,000 Berries after defeating Jabra of CP9 but his photograph failed and replace with Duval's photo. His second bounty was 177,000,000, but "only alive" by the request of his father Vinsmoke Judge. After escape from Totto Land, Sanji's third bounty is 330,000,000 berries but changed the text from "only alive" back to "Dead or Alive" and print his surname due to his connections for the Vinsmoke Family despite of thrown his surname "Vinsmoke". His current bounty is 1,032,000,000 berries after he defeated Queen as well as his photograph is back to a sketch (similar to his first bounty after the Enies Lobby incident) possibly another attempted photograph failed again but return as the fourth highest again as well being called by Zoro as Number 4.

He is voiced by Hiroaki Hirata (who also voiced Vergil from Devil May Cry video game series), and Ikue Ōtani as a child in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Eric Vale, Veronica Taylor, Christine Auten and Megan Shipman as a child in the English version of the anime.

After the Timeskip[]

1000px-Sanji Full View

After the two year timeskip, Sanji's hair now covers his right eye, shows his left eye which also has curly eyebrow. He has grown his hair just slightly longer. He also sports a dark goatee, and stubble on his upper lip. Both his left and right eyebrow are curled to the right. Sanji's neck has gotten thicker as well, similar to Luffy and Zoro. He wears a black and yellow 3-piece suit. In Punk Hazard, he wears a full black three-piece suit.

While on Punk Hazard, Kin'emon used his unnamed Devil Fruit ability to give Sanji a double-breasted coat for the cold, as he was trapped in Nami's body because of Trafalgar Law.

Past[]

The Dream of Two Fools[]

Sanji was Zeff's protégé and sous-chef, and the two had a long history together. Nine years earlier, when a young Sanji was working as a ship's cook on the Cruise Obit in the North Blue, the pirate Red Leg Zeff and his crew attacked the ship. However, both ships were caught in a sudden storm, and sank. Zeff managed to save the young Sanji from drowning, losing part of his leg in the process and the two were washed onto a rock outcropping, high above the sea. Before the storm tore the boats apart, Sanji cried out his dream to find the All Blue, and was saved by Zeff after. Sanji realizing that Zeff has lost his leg.

Despite their good fortune, there was little food for them: a few rations had washed onto the rock with them, but there was no vegetation, no animals, and no way to reach the water to fish. Splitting up what little rations remained, Zeff ordered Sanji to sit at the other end of the island, and look for a ship. Sanji protested that Zeff was keeping a large sack for himself, but Zeff brushed him off, saying that as an adult, his stomach was bigger. Days passed, Sanji had no more food, but there was still no sign of a ship. Many weeks afterward (the exact amount of time differs between the manga and anime), an emaciated Sanji decided to take a chance, and kill the old man for his food. He did not kill Zeff, however: when he slashed open the old man's sack in a fit of rage, he discovered that there was no food inside, only treasure. To his horror, he realized that Zeff had sacrificed his own leg to save Sanji.

Zeff confessed that he often lacked food on the high seas, and planned on opening a restaurant on the seas. Sanji, guilty over plotting to kill Zeff, agreed, but Zeff remarked that he was too weak to help. Soon after, a ship appeared, and they were spared from death. Because of this ordeal, Sanji pledged to never refuse food to a starving individual, no matter how evil or poor they may be. In the manga, Sanji began smoking shortly after starting to work at the Baratie in order to impress Zeff, despite Zeff's warnings that it would destroy his taste buds, only for Sanji to reply "Now, I am a man!".

Personality[]

Sanji maintains a facade of cool confidence, which is generally accurate, however, it is also cover for his deep seated self-esteem issues; being raised by Vinsmoke Judge, king of Germa, was a heartless upbringing. Judge was a mad scientist, who treated his offspring more like the lab experiments, rather than children; Sanji's brothers felt nothing about it due to their genetic manipulation that also erased empathy, compassion, and conscience, however, Sanji was affected by the antiserum his mother, Sora, took, which cost her, her life, but granted him his soul. Sanji felt immense guilt upon learning his mother died to give him a chance at humanity, but his older sister, Reiju - who was also capable of empathy and kindness, but hid it to avoid their father's wrath - helped him realise he should appreciate their mother's sacrifice and live to honor her memory.

When Sanji tried to flee Germa in secret, he was caught by Judge; however, instead of locking him up again, Judge allowed him to leave on the condition that Sanji never reveal their relation, since Judge declared him his greatest failure. This final interaction would haunt Sanji, and he wouldn't find a sense of self-worth until adopted by Zeff, who also instilled in him his most cherished values of respect for food and chivalry. When Sanji reunited with his birth father as an adult, he no longer feared him, only despised him for his amoral experiments - one of which caused the death of Sora - and his megalomaniacal delusions of grandeur. Similarly, Sanji had a hostile relationship with his brothers due to their constant bullying as children, and being antitheses to his values, as they disregarded the worth of food, and treated any "commoner" with contempt and violence, including women. The only living blood relative Sanji had a somewhat positive relationship with was his big sister, Reiju, since both still had their souls; albeit, Reiju's pessimistic attitude and remorse over serving their father's ambitions made her initially unsupportive of more hopeful options.

Sanji is incredibly lecherous (which is interestingly still a trait in his brothers, despite their emotion-suppression), with him becoming oafish and clumsy upon witnessing highly attractive women; although, he is able to recover a sense of dignity, acting charming and servile to the women he finds beautiful. However, regardless of his gentlemanly demeanour, his head is entirely flooded with lascivious thoughts - Viola's Devil Fruit powers include mind-reading, and seeing Sanji's mind overwhelmed and unnerved her due to the quantity and depravity of his imagination. His lust appears to be based on visuals, while ignoring labels of the person; such as his frustration and confusion about being attracted to Emporio Ivanokov's female form, yet horror upon their switch to male form; on another gender issue, Yamato admires Kozuki Oden so much that she adopts his name and even considers themselves a man, and as such entered the men's bath to the pervy elation of the more lustful Straw Hats, including Sanji, who sees their biologically female beauty above their own perception. Sanji's friendliness is generally reserved for attractive women, as elderly or "ugly" women are treated with anything from disappointment to disgust; even so, his pride as a chef means he will still serve them, or anyone hungry, to the best of his abilities.

Despite Sanji's attraction to beautiful women/mermaids appearing extremely superficial, he does display an appreciation for personality traits; while still salivating over their beauty, he does respect Nami's wit and navigational genius, likewise admiring Robin's talent at deciphering impossible script and her willpower to survive so long alone from childhood.

Sanji's most significant attraction, which was physical, emotional, and mental was with Charlotte Pudding; he was instantly enamoured because of her beauty, and she was receptive to his kindnesses and clumsiness alike, however, it went deeper after learning the truth of their Big Mom Pirates/Germa Kingdom planned wedding. When Sanji overheard Pudding was following her mother's orders, which result in his death, and knowing she didn't love him, it broke his heart to the point he was unable to resist his doom. Thanks to Luffy, however, a small contingent of Straw Hats, and other allies, Sanji overcame his sorrow, as he understood his crew still loved and needed him. At the deceptive wedding, before preparing to shoot Sanji, Pudding revealed her third eye, which was an aspect her mother made her feel ashamed of and childhood bullying hardened her into being cruel in return; contrary to expectation, Sanji declared Pudding's eye to be beautiful, showing an expansion beyond his typical superficiality. Upon receiving a compliment of what Pudding hated most about herself, made her break down into tears, due to emotional overload from gratitude and happiness; Sanji, misinterpretating it as him offending her, attempted to apologise, which reinforces his kind nature. Even as other Big Mom Pirates attempted to execute him, he went out of his way to protect Pudding, and deflecting attacks from her brother enraged at her "failure."

Sanji and Pudding were essentially kindred spirits, as both were seen as nothing but tools for their parents' ambitions, suffered intense childhood bullying, felt inferior to their siblings, had one sibling with whom they were close, and both had passion and talent for cooking (though hers was only for sweets). Sanji's continuous kindness and acceptance of her third eye made Pudding actually fall in love with him, albeit due to her life of hiding her true emotions and pretending to be heartless made her a somewhat bipolar tsundere, yet Sanji still found her charming - though the twist was that he was no longer the lovesick suitor, she was. They were able to harmoniously cooperate, along with her sister, Chiffon, and a team of memory-altered chefs, in creating the world's most perfect wedding cake - a feat deemed impossible - which was to stop Big Mom's hunger pang-fueled rampage. Before Sanji left with his friends, Pudding kissed him, although used her Memo Memo Fruit powers to remove his memory of it and possibly of her as well, so he could leave without regret or guilt, thus his compassion inspired her to a profound act of selflessness.

Without memory of Pudding, Sanji reverted to his usual lustful manner, though perhaps slightly worse. Pre-timeskip, he'd allude to his desire to have invisibility powers for the sake of peeking in the women's bath, and post-timeskip after Whole Cake Island, his brother snuck his Raid suit to him, which enraged Sanji until he realised the Stealth Black suit allows the power of invisibility. In spite of his frequent proclamations about respecting women, Sanji used the suit to sneak into Wano Flower Capital's women's bathhouse; he would have escaped without punishment, had Nami's towel not slipped, provoking a nosebleed from him that broke the veil.

Sanji's relationship with his fellow Straw Hats is overall positive. Luffy values his cooking, but him even more, willing to risk war with an Emperor, Big Mom, to keep him in the crew; in turn, Sanji is grateful for Luffy's loyalty, bravery, and strength, as well as firmly believing that Luffy will become King of Pirates - though, Sanji does express frustration at Luffy when he grabs food before it's ready or consumes something meant for the girls. Sanji is completely subservient and worshipful to Nami and Robin, with him unaware or uncaring when they manipulate him; Robin is amused by his antics, and immensely grateful when he called for her to save him, whereas Nami is annoyed or disgusted by his worse privacy-breaking perving, but respects his ultimately gentle and generous heart. The rest of the crew are on good terms with him, except for Roronoa Zoro; Sanji and Zoro appear to despise each other, when left together, they immediately break into spiteful insults and scorn. Sanji and Zoro seem perfectly synchronised when battling an enemy together, however, they still resort to degrading each other and even start petty competitions to beat more enemies or just one faster. Sanji and Zoro threaten harm against each other, sometimes getting close to openly fighting, and when one is away from the crew, the other expresses a desire to leave without them; even so, they will save each other when enemies cripple them, albeit complain and insult their "weakness" for getting so hurt.

Like all Straw Hats, except Luffy and maybe often Zoro, Sanji is gentle and kind towards children; albeit, he does express aggressive jealousy when a child crosses a line he can't, such as Kozuki Momonosuke exploiting his status as a child to lay on or grope Nami and Robin, who dismiss it as a little kid's innocence, whereas Sanji is angered since he knows Momo understands the pervy nature of his actions, thus is blinded by envy.

Abilities and Powers[]

Sanji is one of the crew's top four fighters, having the third top bounty(not direct indication of strength or fighting potential), after Luffy and Jinbe. Occasionally, Sanji will take on an opponent explicitly weaker than Zoro's. An example of this is when Sanji fought Jabra of CP9, who had a slightly lower power level than Kaku, who lost to Zoro. The introduction of Douriki during the CP9 Arc is one of the only times in the series that opponents' strengths have been measured numerically.

Physical Abilities[]

Superhuman Strength[]

Although Sanji is primarily known for his incredible leg strength, the rest of his body is shown to be just as superhumanly strong, including his arms, which enables him to use an array of handstands, for his fighting style, which makes him much more versatile in certain combat situations. In his first appearance Sanji held Fullbody up by the neck unsupported with one hand before even displaying his lower body strength. One particular example of his inhuman strength is shown during the Skypiea Arc, while riding on the Going Merry, he was capable of lifting a large mallet that looked to have weighed several tons before using it to slam an Impact Dial that was sitting on top of a barrel; needless to say, the impact would have most likely busted a hole on the Going Merry's deck had it not been absorbed by the Dial.

Sanji strength

Sanji's arm strength.

Another example of his physical might is seen when he was able to hold Absalom in place by gripping onto his leg, despite the latter's reinforced muscular structure and being struck multiple times while doing so. In the same fight Sanji could hold Nami above his head and keep her balanced while receiving countless attacks to his body from Absalom. In Water 7 Sanji was also able to easily restrain Chopper in Heavy Point from going to treat Usopp's injuries. In the non-canon Sixth movie Sanji was shown lifting a enormous cooking pot and physically flipping a giant meal over.

Post time-skip In Zou, Sanji was shown lifting a huge pile of wounded minks with little help. After his two years of training, his body has become much more stronger and faster, being able to break the neck of a Pacifista with only a kick, critically damaging it, and not showing any trouble afterwards (something he was not able to do before the timeskip) or being able to break a Kairoseki cage just with kicks (as seen in Episode of Luffy).

When he reunited with his family, his younger brother Yonji attempted to reprimand causing Sanji to attack him leaving him with a dent in his face while Sanji emerged without a scratch; this is noteworthy as Yonji used to bully Sanji in the past due to Sanji not being superhuman like his siblings. His brother couldn't believe that Sanji was able to best him as he was a weakling thirteen years ago.

Later on, Sanji was able to match his father Judge, the leader of Germa 66 in a duel and his newly improved strength left his father and spectating sister in surprise with the latter referring to him as a "beast" finding it hard to believe he was the same little boy from back then. Later in the same arc Sanji matched Charlotte Daifuku and Charlotte Oven in strength and in the Wano arc Sanji overpowered Page One able to kick him over with one leg.

In Egghead, he managed to damage Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro. Along with Luffy, Franky and Bonney, Sanji was able to sent Marcus Mars flying to space with a combination attack.

Superhuman durability[]

Thanks to the years of extremely intense physical training under Zeff into his young adulthood, Sanji's body became tremendously tough. He was able to survive decompression when Kuroobi forced him down through the water in Arlong Park's very deep swimming pool as well as taking head-on attacks like Kuroobi's Fish-Man Karate punches. Sanji was able to survive Enel's "El Thor", an attack so powerful it disintegrated a normal man earlier in the arc and took out the great snake Nola, but Sanji withstood the lightning blast at point-blank range and was still able to stand and mock Enel before collapsing.

Sanji pain resistance

Sanji's extreme resilience

Sanji was caught off guard and almost beaten to death by Kalifa after being affected by her Devil Fruit powers, but later when he was set free from them, he could still fight against Jabra to the point of even receiving half of the later's "Gekko Jushigan" just before counter-attacking them with his kicks and even winning the face off. In Thriller Bark Sanji was stabbed in the back by Absalom with a knife long enough to go through his chest and still manage to defeat him with relative ease (something Zoro in a similar situation was not able to do, when he was stabbed by Buggy). In Sabaody Archipelago, Sanji survived a Pacifista laser beam being shot through his chest.

Post timeskip is also now able to withstand pressures of over 5000 feet under water without a coating, a depth which would have crushed a submarine. Sanji was also being able to take direct punches from both Jinbe and Luffy to the head, from both sides simultaneously, with relatively minor injuries (though left bleeding on the ground). In Punk Hazard while Nami was inside his body, it also displayed enough endurance to withstand a direct explosion from Caesar's Gastanet, and moments later after recovering his body, he could still fight on par with Vergo and recover from getting his tibia cracked. In Whole Cake Island Sanji even shrugged off a bullet wound to the arm while protecting Luffy from Oven 's army on Cacao Island and did not notice it until Chopper pointed it out. In Egghead arc, Sanji didn't receive any damage when he was punched at the face by S-Shark (a clone of his crewmate, Jinbe). He also withstands Kizaru's kicks. Even Nusjuro's bite on Sanji didn't even hurt him either due to his modification.

Superhuman speed[]

Sanji Super Speed

Sanji's inhuman speed

Sanji's speed, agility, and reflexes are tremendous. In fact, his speed rivals that of Brook and even Luffy's Gear Second. In his first fight against the Krieg Pirates, Sanji moved so fast he appeared like he was disappearing and reappearing. At Little Garden, Sanji avoided machine gun fire from Miss Friday and in Jaya, he dodged Mont Blanc Cricket's gunshot at point blank range.

Even when up against the lightning fast CP9 and their formidable Rokushiki techniques, Sanji proved his mobility by countering Kalifa's Soru with ease and forced her to the ground, causing the assassin to marvel at how fast the cook was, and he mustered up enough centrifugal force to slightly break through the guarding power of Blueno's Tekkai with a single kick to the side. Sanji was able to dodge an onslaught of blows from Oars, causing Luffy's shadow to get annoyed.

Due to fleeing from the Okamas in the Kamabakka Kingdom for two years, Sanji's already impressive speed increased massively. Sanji was able to dodge Vergo's kick when it was centimeters from his face and in Dressrosa, he took out a sniper (who had Sanji in his crosshairs) who was 16 meters above the ground and claimed it was "nothing" to Viola. Sanji was confident that he could avoid a point blank shot from Pudding and he proved fast enough to dodge Charlotte Katakuri's jellybean projectile from several meters away, an exceptional feat as Katakuri is an extremely skilled Kenbunshoku Haki user and could not foresee Sanji being swift enough to dodge his shot and was surprised by Sanji's reaction.

In the same arc while Pound was trying to defend Chiffon from Oven, Sanji was able to instantly kick Oven away and grab Chiffon without neither Pound nor Oven noticing. Also, during the time he spent running away from the Okama on the Momoiro Island, he developed both the "Blue Walk" and "Sky Walk", techniques similar to the Rokushiki's technique Geppo, enabling him the ability to swim (at great speeds) and fly respectively.

Genetic Modification[]

He received genetic modification for superhuman strength, agility and endurance that his siblings have. However, his modification was seemingly negated by his mother, Sora by using a counter-drug so that her children would still have their humanity and emotions, but this worked only on Sanji, causing his modifications to vanish, leaving him "human".

After using the Raid suit mulitple times, his domant genetic modifications started to manifest. An example of this would be his body being completely crushed due to huge pressure with all of his bones broken and dislocated but still with just a twitch all of them came back to normal. Another fact would be the fact that massive sword got shattered upon impact on his body and none of the bullets, canons and explosives did any real damage to him upon being directly hit. He has extraordinary healing factor when he can even recover from his injuries by Kizaru. Sanji even quickly recovers from Nusjuro's bite.

However, his modification is still incomplete.

Fighting Style[]

Black Leg Style[]

0175-012

Sanji's kicking power.

Under the former Pirate Captain and adoptive father, Zeff's strict training, Sanji has created and mastered a kicking-based martial art referred to as the "Black Leg Style". His legs and feet are extremely powerful, able to smash boulders and effortlessly defeat creatures much larger than himself (like Bananawani and Mohmoo). His legs also imbue him with superior agility, and his speed is close to superhuman as he was easily capable of out-pacing the super fast CP9 members He has also stated that the reason he fights with his feet is that he does not want to risk damaging his hands as he needs them to cook, though handstands aren't prohibited.

He is also able to use one-handed handstands, and execute consecutive back handsprings (as seen during his fight with Jabra). In the same fight Sanji unleashes a new move "Diable Jambe", the power to heat his lower legs to a temperature so high that they glow bright red, by spinning rapidly in place, which causes his attack to be more powerful.

After spending two years running away from okama, his sprinting abilities have reached a point where he can momentarily run under water, using a Geppo-like technique he calls "Blue Walk". Not only is he not slowed down by the weight of water as he was during the Arlong Park Arc, but he can run to a degree of incredible speed as fast as a fishman, Usopp has also stated that Sanji's speed is on par with a fishman, who are at their physical prime while under water. He is also able to leap and run much farther than most humans.

He has then improved this to using his version of "Geppo" in a move he names the "Sky Walk". Whether or not his proficiency with the technique is on par with other CP9's members still remains a mystery.

Sanji Diable Jamble

Sanji's using Diable Jamble kicks.

Also after the timeskip it's been shown that he can now utilize fire in his strikes similar to his Diable Jambe. This is partially due to the trauma Sanji endured form the last two years, so much so that simply reminding himself of it causes him to burst out in flames through sheer anger. Which he shows after easily defeating the gigantic fishman Wadatsumi, using "Hell Memories" while in this mental state to engulf the massive foe in flames.

Due to his innate genetic modifications awakening from his Raid Suit, granting him an exoskeleton, augmented muscles and speed, combined with his own trained Busoshoku Haki. All this lets him use much hotter flames, resulting in the new move, "Ifrit Jambe", making it easier to land powerful blows against even Queen, an Ancient Zoan user who has cybernetic enhancements and Germa 66's own technologies, sending backwards a great distance and making him bleed.

Knife Fighting[]

While unwilling to engage in combat using his hands most of the time, Sanji is skilled at using cutlery in combat, displaying such skill against CP7 assassin Wanz. Seeing as Wanz was using a unique fighting technique where he used pasta as armor, Sanji exploited a loophole in his own style, easily defeating Wanz using kitchen knives to fight him the same way he'd prepare pasta.

Techniques[]

As for using his actual "attacks", Sanji has a very large number of specific kicks and techniques he uses to fight with. It should be noted that he does not call out an attack name whenever he kicks someone or something, but for important events and fights he usually will. Most of his attacks are said in French and are usually cooking/food terms related in some way to the specific portion of the opponent's body that he's targeting or to the nature of the attack itself. In the 4Kids English anime, the attacks are changed to be funny sounding, non-existent food items that have something to do with the target area of the attack.

Common attacks are "Mouton Shot", where Sanji jumps and flips, and kicks with all his might into the foe's mid-region or head. And "Anti-Manner Kick Course", one of Sanji's most powerful kicks where he delivers a 180 degree vertical kick upward into a giant foe's torso or back, which is usually used on those he sees as having no manners, e.g. those that attack women; a typical finishing move.

Sanji's comedic finishing move "Parage Shoot", is a series of kicks directed at his opponent's face. This results in a rearrangement of the victim's facial structure, often turning them handsome or bishounen-like, as seen with Wanze and Duval.

Haki[]

Kenbunshoku Haki[]

Sanji Observation

Sanji using Kenbunshoku Haki to evade Katakuri's projectile attack.

Kenbunshoku Haki is Sanji's speciality concerning Haki. When helping Kin'emon recover his torso from within the lake on Punk Hazard, Sanji actively used Kenbunshoku Haki in order to locate the samurai's torso within the dark water.

It was also hinted at during the Fishman Island Arc, that both he and Zoro possess Kenbunshoku Haki when asked by Luffy if the pair could sense a "wild animal" in the Ryugu Palace, which they both answered that they could.

In the Zou Arc, he sensed Nekomamushi's presence from within Bege's castle and threw his friends out knowing they'd be safe from danger. During the Whole Cake Island Arc, he easily evaded a jellybean bullet fired by Charlotte Katakuri (another Kenbunshoku master who trained his haki to see the future) even after the latter foresaw he would dodge an a shot from the priest.

Sanji's ability to both sense and dodge the bullet left the sweet Commander shocked. He was also able to dodge point blank shots from Charlotte Pudding as she revealed her true nature to him.

Busoshoku Haki[]

Sanji Busoshoku Haki

Sanji activating Busoshoku: Koka to defend againist Orochi's guards.

During the Punk Hazard Arc, it was stated Sanji is a Busoshoku Haki user who is one of the few who can fight against Caesar Clown a logia user. However, he did not show this ability until his duel with his father when much to Judge's surprise he blocked his spear attack with Busoshoku Haki imbued leg.

Later, Sanji used Busoshoku Haki to save Carrot from Charlotte Daifuku's genie by coating his leg and blocking the genie's naginata with his foot. In Wano, Sanji uses Busoshoku Haki to counterattack X-Drake's biting attack and protect Nami from Kanjuro's Ukiyo Yudachi Ezu attack. Sanji's usage of this type of Haki is fitting as it matches his epithet Black Leg.

Other Skills[]

Chivalry Senses: It has been demonstrated several times that he takes chivalry to such an extent that he can sense when a woman is in danger when he is nowhere close to within earshot, such as when Brogy approached Nami in Little Garden and when Tashigi was in tears after her failed attack on Vergo.

Culinary Expertise: Last but not least Sanji is an expert cook, possessing vast knowledge and the capability of preparing almost any kind of food with a strong sense to the aesthetics of cooking. He cooks with amazing speed and dexterity, particularly in his use of knives. His sense of taste also is not lacking; often, he is able to deduce the qualities of aspects (i.e. ingredients, and method of cooking and preparations) involved in a prepared dish under a very short period of time. By the end of the two year timeskip, its been shown that Sanji has already won the 99 recipes of Kamabakka Kingdom's Attack Cuisine as prizes for managing to defeat the Okama Kenpo masters on Momoiro.

Equipment[]

Sanji Raid Suit

Raid Suit: For leaving his biological family and never see them again, Sanji retrieve a Raid Suit canister with a "3" on it from his brother, Niji as a suitcase for Sanji to leave his family and never coming back. But Sanji refused to use it to fight his enemies because he is not an official member of Germa 66 and give it away to Luffy and Chopper. Despite his hatred toward his family and their technology, he nonetheless used it to peek in the women's bath, which conveniently also allowed him to use it against Page One. His Raid Suit greatly boosts his existing strength, stamina, and durability, as well as having the ability to become invisible which fulfills Sanji's long-held desire to become invisible to, as noted, peeping beautiful women while bathe without getting caught - though, he was also able to use invisibility for its intended combat purposes, too. However, he destroyed his canister when he refused to use it due to it somehow awakening his genetic-modifications that he feared would mean that he will lost his humanity.

Weaknesses[]

  • His past self: During his childhood, Sanji was born as a normal human and weak for being defenseless for his brothers bullying him and his father abused him for not having his exo-skeleton due to his mother, Sora intervene by taking a counter-drug which Judge isn't aware of it. after 8 months locked up into a dungeon by his stubborn father, this struggle caused Sanji to bear a deep hatred toward both his father and brothers. Years later after Vinsmoke were betrayed by Big Mom, he claimed that the Vinsmoke Sanji who escape 13 years ago has long since "dead"' which is what Judge wanted.
  • Refusal to fighting women: Due to his training with Zeff, Sanji's greatest weakness is denial of fighting women even if he dies such as Kalifa and Viola. Another reason is likely also respect for his late mother, Sora, and the fact his sister, Reiju, was his only sibling that showed him compassion.
  • Petrified by women: Sanji turned to stone by women's beauty such as Boa Hancock, Shirahoshi and beautiful mermaids.
  • His Perversion: Sanji is a pervert who interested of beautiful women. Enemies, such as Black Maria, are able to exploit his lust by enticing him into forgetting his current missions and luring him into traps. He suffers a nosebleed for more beautiful such as Nami, Robin and mermaids such as Ishilly. After 2 years on Okama Island, he was especially susceptible to visual stimulation from beauty; upon seeing a group of beautiful mermaids, he suffered such an intense nosebleed that lost consciousness with anemia, and needed a blood-transfusion to survive - albeit, he did seem to build a "tolerance" after the initial desaguination.
  • Unable Hands for combat: During his training with Zeff, Sanji cannot use his hands for combat. He only use his hands for cooking.
  • Smoking habit: He is almost endlessly smoking cigarettes, whether when cooking or in combat, thus showing his addiction. There have not been any ailments or side effects yet, but his addiction can distract him when trying to light another smoke.

~ Sanji seeing Saturn turn into his beast form.
Dammit!! Sorry about this, Vegapunk!!
~ Sanji apologies to Vegapunk when couldn't save him after Kizaru stabbing Vegapunk.
We're not gonna cut you slack just 'cause you're senile...!! This is a pirate's fight, you geezer!
~ Sanji when kicking Nusjuro and saving Bonney again.

Trivia[]

  • According to Oda, Sanji's design is based on the actor Steve Buscemi while portraying the character Mr. Pink in the 1992 film Reservoir Dogs.
  • Black Leg Style is an unusual martial art seemingly takes some inspiration from the Brazilian martial art, Capoeira, and the Korean martial art, Taekwondo and may have took some from the Chinese art, Tan Tui and bears an almost identical line, in name and in style, to the extremely powerful and dangerous (to both the user and opponent) style, Blood Leg. Inspirations may also point to a French fighting style now known as, Savate.
    • Originally developed by French sailors, Savate employs similar techniques that utilize the hands to support the body and give added power to kicks, and is especially useful on a swaying ship. French law at this time considered hands as lethal weapons, which could lead to death if hands were used to kill someone. Possibly for this reason, Sanji's main opponents throughout the series so far were all martial artists with their own unique style (such as Kuroobi's "Fishman Karate", Bon Kurei's "Okama Kenpo", Wanze's "Ramen Kenpo", and Jabra's "Tekkai Kenpo").
  • Despite being the third strongest within his crew, Sanji always has been the fourth highest of Straw Hat Pirates while one of his crew being the third highest (first Robin, then Usopp and now Jinbe) as well it is Oda's gags, earning Sanji a nickname from Zoro to be called "No. 4/Fourth Placer" as the way of Zoro's ranking the crew of their bounties (similar to Zoro's ranking arrivals in their return to Sabaody by calling him No. 7).
  • His Japanese voice actor, Hiroaki Hirata, also voiced Captain Jack Sparrow (video game) in Kingdom Hearts II, Leomon, Hiroaki Ishida and Gennai (young) in Digimon Adventure, Vergil in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, Leomon in Digimon Tamers, Pip Bernadotte in Hellsing, Lindow Amamiya in God Eater, Shiro Fujimoto in Blue Exorcist, Gabu in Arashi no Yoru ni, Caliburn the Sword in Sonic and the Black Knight, Klein in Sword Art Online, and Jean Pierre Polnareff in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle.
  • His English voice actor, Eric Vale, also voiced Yuki Sohma in Fruits Basket (2019), Ultimate Imposter in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, Future Trunks in Dragon Ball Z, Loke in Fairy Tail, America in Hetalia, Nishiki Nishio in Rize, Kazuma in Noragami, Justin Law in Soul Eater, Toya in Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, Arystar Krory III in D.Gray-man, Diablo in How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord, Tobari Durandal Kumohira in Nabari no Ou, Hachi in Darling in the Franxx, Arthur Boyle in Fire Force, Phoenix Wright in Ace Attorney, Popuko in Pop Team Epic, Casshern in Casshern Sins, and Teppei Takamiya in B't X.
  • Because of strict rules from the FCC, the 4Kids version of Sanji's cigarette was changed to a lollipop; the subsequent English and other dubs do not change the cigarette, delivering the anime without censorship in at least regard to smoking.
  • His own favorite foods include spicy seafood past and anything that compliments black tea. He does not like konjac, claiming it is unhealthy.
