Sapphire Birch (Japanese: オダマキ・サファイア Sapphire Odamaki) is a main character in the manga series Pokémon Adventures and one of the main protagonists of the Ruby & Sapphire arc, Emerald arc and the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc (alongside Ruby). She is based on May from Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.
Because she conquered 8 gyms in 80 days, she is given the title of "Conqueror".
Appearance[]
Sapphire is a very slim girl of average height. She has long brown hair with a side swept fringe at the front, large sapphire blue eyes and sharp canine teeth.
Ruby & Sapphire arc[]
She is first seen in the RS arc wearing a simple leaf two piece, made up of a grass skirt and a leaf bikini style top, and camouflage painted on her body.
She later wears a set of clothes that Ruby made for her, after reading a note he left with them saying she would look nice in them. This outfit consists of a red t-shirt with a dark blue circle around her neck, dark blue bike shorts, white miniskirt, red and yellow sneakers, a red bandanna with a white PokéBall print, a yellow waist-pack, and dark-blue and white gloves.
After an argument with Ruby, she destroys these clothes in anger, and returns to wearing leaf clothes.
When she has to go to the cave of origin with Ruby, he makes her another set of clothes, this time consisting of a green bandanna, a sleeveless and short orange tunic with a black collar, black bike shorts, black socks, and red and white sneakers.
Emerald arc[]
In the Emerald arc, she wears a bright blue version of her second RS outfit. This outfit can be presumed to have been made by Ruby as well.
Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc[]
In the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc, she wears a scarlet vest top over a black vest, white shorts over black Lycra mini-leggings, red and yellow shoes and a red and white bandana tied on her head like a bow. She also has a mega bracelet on her wrist. This outfit was also made by Ruby.
Overview[]
Sapphire Birch is the daughter of Professor Birch and Ruby's childhood friend. She serves as the female protagonist of the Ruby & Sapphire arc. She had an 80-day record of obtaining all Badges of one region, which was broken later by Platinum.
Sapphire, with Ruby, later appears in the Emerald arc, and later in the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc.
Trivia[]
- Her birthday is September 20, making her birthstone a sapphire, like her name.
- Sapphire conquered all the Hoenn Gyms in 80 days, which the record was broken by Platinum.
- She is one of the main characters to have a surname.
- She was born in Littleroot Town, and is the daughter of Professor Birch, similar to her game counterpart when not selected by the player and May in Pokémon Masters. However, she collects badges and has the starter whose type has a disadvantage over Ruby's starter (Torchic for Sapphire, Mudkip for Ruby), much like her game counterpart as the player (if she chooses Torchic, as in this case, Brendan, her rival, will choose Mudkip).
- She never forgot Ruby, although she forgot his name and face, hence the reason she didn't *recognize him when they met again.
- This corresponds with Ruby never forgetting Sapphire, although he too forgot her name and face.
- Sapphire would seem to have no shame, as she stripped off in front of Flannery and tore her clothes off in front of Ruby with no obvious embarrassment.
- However, in both instances she did it quickly, and quickly covered herself up.
- She has been mistaken for a Pokémon twice.
- She is the only Pokédex holder from Hoenn, as Ruby and Emerald are originally from Johto.
- She originally thought Ruby's hat was his hair, thinking he dyed his hair white.
- According to Ruby when he first met Sapphire, he noticed she had a strange accent, which she still carries in the ORAS chapter.
