Satoru Gojo is the overarching protagonist of the popular 2018 manga and anime series, Jujutsu Kaisen. He is the strongest Jujutsu Sorcerer in the world, even rivalling and surpassing the King of Curses Sukuna himself. Like most sorcerers, Satoru strived to protect the worldfrom the Cursed Spirits that plagued it. However, Gojo saw the structure of Jujutsu Sorcerer society as flawed, and as such hoped to change it for the better. To this end, he became a teacher at Jujutsu High, a school dedicated to the cultivation of new generations of Jujutsu Sorcerers.
In the anime series, he is voiced by Yuichi Nakamura in the Japanese version of the anime adaptation and by Kaiji Tang in the English version. Nakamura's other heroic roles include Reinhard van Astrea in Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, Hawks in My Hero Academia, Gray Fullbuster in Fairy Tail, Mumen Rider in One Punch Man, Bruno Buccellati in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, Greed in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Renji Yomo in Tokyo Ghoul, Dwarf Shaman in Goblin Slayer, and Guren Ichinose in Seraph of the End. Tang's other heroic roles include Sanemi Shinazugawa in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, EMIYA in the Fate franchise, Gaius Worzel in The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel, and Guts in the 2016 version of Berserk.
Back when Satoru was a student, he was extremely confident in his abilities and reputation as a powerful sorcerer, believing himself to be invincible, his opinion of others often only going as far as his judgement of their strength, and he was quite apathetic towards anyone he deems weak. Additionally, greatly influenced by his own desire for power, he was very arrogant, convinced that he is the strongest in the world, which he technically is, claiming that "throughout the Heavens and earth, he alone is the honored one.", his extensive amount of pride and arrogance after perfecting his reverse cursed technique in his following battle against Toji Fushiguro. During intense battles, Satoru is seen to occasionally fall into a frenzied fighting state, urged by his determination for victory and undeniable proof that he alone is the strongest. His combative style is characterized by his aggressive and domineering attacks, while flaunting his mastered techniques to his opponents.
Nevertheless, despite his haughtiness and strength, Satoru is much more human than he first appears. Despite his arrogance and god complex, Satoru was able to build genuine friendships with Shouko and Suguru Geto and he was best friends with Suguru, despite his disapproval of Suguru's moral compass. He genuinely grew close to Riko Amanai, beginning to develop compassion for and seek to protect "weak people" the first time in his life. Even with his previous arrgoance and conceit temporarily clouding his feelings of grief and empathy over Riko's death, after defeating Toji, Satoru quickly felt once more the sadness and regret he felt over failing to save her as he retrieved Riko's corpse with a sorrowful look, uncharacteristically being somber through the entire time and he was emotionally distraught to where he showed none of his previous haughty demeanor when he contemplated killing the Star Religious members that were laughing over Riko's death, simply stating that their laughter disgusted him to where he would feel nothing if he killed them.
His experiences with Riko ultimately greatly changed Satoru, but in a completely different manner than Suguru: Unlike Suguru, whose moral compass made him became disillusioned and embittered seeing the Star Globe ruthlessly laugh at Riko's corpse and eventually turned to the path of darkness, experiencing Riko's selflessness and compassion allowed Satoru to abandon his old ways of arrogantly believing himself above having to protect the weak, realizing that the very power that he has makes it his responsibility to protect those who cannot fight for themselves and keeping the balance of the world.
He has since became committed to protecting the lives of innocents and being a jujutsu sorcerer not for the sake of becoming the strongest but for the greater good and the sake of humans who can't defend themselves, to where he would take many dangerous missions without hesitation and no longer sought fame or glory, instead simply focusing on defeating curses to protect humanity, his change in demeanor and strength both impressing and alinating the increasingly darker Suguru until Satoru finally became a better man than Suguru.
His new-found moral compass was shown by how Satoru had adopted his friend's former moral code of not killing anyone without a purpose, as he was clearly genuinely horrified and adamantly disapproving of Suguru's newfound ruthlessness and willingness to kill all non-sorcerer humans, seeing no meaning in sacrificing them for a better world, to where he was genuinely disgusted when Suguru nonchalantly reminded him he was capable of doing that, showing just how far he has come and how firmly he has committed himself to the protection of the weak. His newfound dedication to protect humanity and keep the balance ultimately lead to him being willing to kill Suguru, somberly accepting there was no other way and putting an end to the man he once saw as an equal and best friend after having spared him in Shinjuku.
In the present, Satoru still keeps his self-confidence but his arrogance has toned down to where he finally realizes being the strongest alone means nothing as even though he has the power to easily take over the world, more people like the higher ups that made the Jujutsu world he has grown disillusioned in would simply appear and he can't always protect the world, seeking to instead reform the jujutsu world from the bottom-up through education and seeking to foster a new generation of sorcerers that has the potential to one day become his equals. He even goes as far as to say that he doesn't mind being surpassed.
Towards sorcerer executives who make up the Jujutsu world he is disillusioned in, he is outright cruel and cold, retaining his old arrogant and uncaring demeanor but pairing it up with an outright bitter and ruthless tone, blatantly showing disrespect and being quite willing to remind he easily has the power to kill all of them. At the same time, his emotional maturity is also shown by how he is much kinder and more nurturing towards his students, to where he was distraught and enraged when he heard Yuji died and repeatedly shows care for and protects them. He even accepted being defeated and sealed by Kamo and maintained belief in his allies, showing how humble he has become.
While in a crisis, he is capable of being cold-blooded and will prioritize his enemies' destruction over saving innocent people when he believes that the sacrifice is unavoidable, he has his limits as the Special Grade Curses accurately deduced in that he won't really harm innocents personally and indeed he was visibly dismayed when they threw countless people at him with Transfigured Humans around knowing his only choice would be to use his Domain Expansion to save all of Shibuya. Even though he could have easily killed them all, he instead chose to limit his Domain Expansion to give the innocents a chance to survive.
Gojo's Past Arc
Satoru Gojo was born on December 7, 1989. After he was born, the balance of power has shifted and Gojo had a bounty put on his head and was targeted by bounty hunters.
During his second year as a student, Gojo along with Geto and Shoko went to check up on Mei Mei and Utahime after not hearing from them in two days. After the three manage to rescue Mei Mei and Utahime along with dealing with the spirit, Geto along with Gojo and Shoko attend a meeting where Masamichi punishes Gojo for not putting up a screen.
Later, Geto is in the classroom with Gojo and Shoko, where they discuss the importance of a screen. Geto and Gojo then get into an argument about the strong protecting the weak which almost ends up in a fight. Suddenly Masamichi enters the room and gives Geto and Gojo a mission from Tengen. Masamichi explains to the two about the importance of the mission and that they will to look out for two groups who want to stop them. After being informed about the mission, Gojo and Geto head out.
As they arrive at the location to pick up the vessel for the mission, an explosion happens and the vessel falls to the ground. Before the vessel hits the ground, Gojo helps Geto save the vessel. Gojo is then confronted by a member of Q, Bayer. Gojo easily defeats Bayer, and meets up with Geto and the vessel, Riko Amanai. Gojo then introduces himself, along with Geto, to Riko. The three then start to talk, which Riko explains how she is not upset about fusing with Tengen.
After talking, Gojo and Geto bring Riko to her junior high, since she forced them to, so that she can visit her friend. Once they arrive at the school, Gojo calls Masamichi, who explains how they have to oblige Riko before she fuses with Tengen. After talking with Masamichi, they decide to check the surveillance spirits and Geto tells him that two have been exorcised. Gojo and Misato head out to protect Riko, while Geto deals with the intruders.
Gojo manages to find Riko and drags her off to take her to the magic college. On the way, Gojo is contacted by Geto, who informs him about the situation. Suddenly the two encounter multiple opponents and Gojo figures out that the opponent is using the clone technique to increase his numbers. Gojo manages to defeat their opponent, but Riko informs him that Misato has been captured by the enemy. Gojo and Rika meet up with Geto and they discuss what to do next.
They decide to save Misato and head to Okinawa for the meeting spot with the kidnappers. They manage to save Misato and decide to have some fun before heading back. When it's time head back to the college, Riko manages to convince them to stay for one more day. Geto asks Gojo if he is alright since Gojo has been using his technique for a while, but Gojo says that he is fine and they continue to have fun. The next day, the four head back to the college but are attacked when they arrive.
Gojo tells the others to head inside, while he takes care of the enemy. Gojo fights the enemy but notices that he can't read his opponent's moves, because the enemy has no cursed energy. When he loses trace of the enemy, Gojo decides to sweep the field with one of his techniques. After sweeping the field, Gojo figures that his opponent won't be able to sneak up on him but the enemy manages to block Gojo's vision with multiple cursed spirits.
Gojo wonders what to do, but the enemy, revealed to be the Sorcerer Killer Toji Fushigoro, attacks and manages to wound Gojo critically. However, Gojo manages to recover and head off to the Star Religious group's base to retrieve Riko's body. Once there, he confronts Toji and explains how he manages to survive. Gojo then takes on the enemy and overwhelms him with his far greater abilities and after a couple of exchanges, manages to kill him with his purple technique. Gojo then heads inside of the Star Religious group's base and sorrowfully retrieves Riko's corpse, clearly emotionally saddened over the death of the first normal human he genuinely grew to have compassion for. Sickened with the laughter of the Star Religious members, Gojo almost kills them all but Geto stops him as it was pointless.
A year later, Geto and Shoko are helping Gojo with his techniques. Gojo explains how he is able to continuously use his technique without causing harm to himself. Days later, Gojo is informed that Geto is on the run after having massacred an entire village along with killing his own parents. Gojo is contacted by Shoko who tells him that Geto is in Shinjuku. Gojo heads over to Shinjuku and manages to meet Geto. The two then talk about how Geto plans to kill every non shaman in world.
Despite Gojo's attempts to remind Geto of his morality and dissuade him, he fails to reach Geto as Geto reminds Gojo he is in fact capable of wiping out all humanity and that while he can't, that doesn't mean it's impossible. When Geto starts to walk away, Gojo thinks about how he can't bring himself to kill Geto. Gojo meets with Masamichi and the two talk about how strong he is after that.
Sometime later, Gojo meets with a young Megumi and the two talk about Megumi's father and the Zenin family. When Megumi says that he doesn't care about his dad anymore since he hasn't been around for a while, Gojo tells Megumi to just ask him if he wants to know anything about his dad. Gojo then asks if he wants to go to the Zenin family, which Megumi says that his answer will depend if his sister will be happy if they go. Gojo tells Megumi that his sister would not be happy, and that he will take care of things and that Megumi should get strong from now on.
Powers and Abilities
Overall Power and Skill: Satoru Gojo is acknowledged as the strongest Jujutsu Sorcerer in the series.
Even when he was still a student, Gojo was already such a powerful prodigy that his power was regarded as causing the balance to be disrupted and made curses stronger to maintain the balance, and his skill made him along with his best friend Suguru Geto the strongest students in Jujutsu High, capable of effortlessly handling multiple powerful and experienced curse users. After nearly dying and being defeated by Toji Fushigoro, the experience allowed Satoru to discover his true capabilities, massively increasing his prowess and power to where he could overwhelm and defeat the renowned Sorcerer Killer, whereas Suguru was easily defeated by him and fellow Special Grade Sorcerer Yuki later on stating it was a truly remarkable feat for Satoru to kill such a superhuman individual. Afterwards, he only continues to grow in power and skill to where he eventually earned his reputation as the strongest, acknowledged by even Suguru to have surpassed him a long way ago. Indeed, Suguru stated that Satoru could very well be capable of killing all humans, and didn't even try to fight back when Satoru was seemingly about to kill him, stating it's fully within his power.
In the present, Satoru's power and skill are feared by even the higher ups of the Jujutsu society, with neither of them being willing to challenge him directly as he could easily kill them all. He also effortlessly overpowered Ryoumen Sukuna and it was regarded even Sukuna at full power won't be able to beat him. The Special Grade Curses and Noritoshi Kamo are also shown to be wary of him, to where Noritoshi stated any of the Special Grades would surely die, including Jogo, the strongest of them, if they challenged him, as shown by how Satoru completely overwhelmed Jogo while not even trying to kill him, and Noritoshi stated to seal him away would require excessive planning and admitted outright there was no way for them to defeat him in combat directly. Even with the Curses having learned to actually counter his abilities, Satoru was still able to easily overwhelm their efforts despite being at a disadvantage due to the Curses endangering and leveraging human lives, killing Hanami while leaving the others in utter shock and awe over how truly powerful and skilled he is, and he is only defeated due to Noritoshi using the Prison Realm to seal him away.
Immense Cursed Energy: Gojo's reputation as the strongest Jujutsu Sorcerer is backed up by his immense superhuman levels of cursed energy and he has tremendous control over it to be capable of performing many complicated feats with ease, activating his Domain in a split second, use reverse cursed techniques, and even combines positive and negative cursed energy. His vast reserves are such that he can use his Domain Expansion several times a day whereas normal sorcerers can only use it once.
Limitless (無下限 Mukagen): At the base level, Limitless is an innate technique which is derived from the Gojo family. Having been naturally inherited, this technique works via precise manipulation of space at the atomic level, resulting in multiple subsequent results and techniques within the overall ability. With the manipulation of space as just the base level of the technique, Limitless has three standard and one "non-standard" form beyond this.
- Infinity (無限 Mugen): Being the neutral form of the Limitless, the Infinity is commonly known as the ability to stop, although this is a common misconception as the true power of the Infinity is to slow things down. When something attempts to hit Satoru, the person or object in question instead hits the infinity between himself and them. According to Satoru, this is the convergence of an infinite series and comes straight from the paradox of Achilles and the tortoise. Akin to the way Achilles will never catch the tortoise due to the potential, infinite amounts of finite space separating them or how the real number one will never touch the real number two due to the infinite amount of fractions that separate them, the opponent will never touch Satoru due to the infinity between them. Satoru can decide what does and doesn't touch him and can do so based upon mass, speed, and danger ratings.
- Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue (術式順転「蒼」 Jutsushiki Junten・Ao): The reinforced version of the neutral limitless; Blue is the byproduct of Gojo amplifying the Limitless and negative energy, producing a vacuum. Through these, Gojo creates a scenario where the world itself is forced to correct itself and fill in the negative space, causing things to be pulled together at the particular spot.
- Cursed Technique Lapse Maximum Cursed Energy Output: Blue (術式順転出力最大「蒼」 Jutsushiki Junten Shutsuryoku Saidai・Ao): Satoru creates a center of gravity capable of attracting everything. He can also move the point of gravity at will.
- Cursed Technique Reversal: Red (術式反転「赫」 Jutsushiki Hanten・Aka): Being an inversion of Blue, Red has the opposite effect. Using his reversal technique to invert the properties of Blue, Satoru activates the divergence of his infinity and causes a repulsive force. Being an ability that is powered by positive cursed energy and formed as a reverse curse technique, the ability has two times the destructive ability of Blue.
- Hollow Purple (虚式「茈」 Kyoshiki・Murasaki): Satoru snaps his fingers, combining "Blue" (attraction) and "Red" (repulsion), firing an invisible force that erases all matter in its path.
- Unlimited Void (無量空処 Muryōkūsho): Gojo's Domain Expansion. It creates a metaphysical space that causes the victims to receive all kinds of stimuli and information endlessly, restraining their thought processes and actions. Gojo's control over his Domain is so fine that he can activate it for only 0.2 seconds, limiting its lasting effect on those he traps within it. Those he makes physical contact with are also immune to its effect.
Six Eyes (六眼 Rikugan): Inhering this once-in-a-lifetime ocular jujutsu among the Gojo Family, it is the reason why Gojo Satoru is able to make such flawless and precise usage of the Limitless, the vast perception and immense brain processing power allowing him to precisely manipulate the sophisticated powers of the Limitless down to an atomic level and ultilize the Limitless techniques's type of complex cursed energy manipulation to their maximum potential.
It also processes Gojo's cursed energy incredibly efficiently, so much so that the amount of cursed energy lost when the user activates a cursed technique is infinitesimally close to zero. Due to this, a proper Six Eyes user will never run out of cursed energy. This has even made Yuta Ittadori, someone with levels of cursed energy comparable to, or even superior, his own, admit Gojo is still far better than him.
The mental prowess of the Six Eyes can turn one moment in reality into well over a minute's worth of time within his brain. Working well in tandem with the his enhanced sight, Gojo is able to analyze and calculate the positions of everything within view instantly and he can see things for several kilometers away, while easily able to distinctly tell apart different figures within their vast range.
It's ability to see cursed energy in extreme detail allows Gojo to see the flow of cursed energy in order to read another person's cursed techniques as well as differentiate between different types of cursed energy and identify a person based on it.
This also allows him to utilize the reverse cursed energy needed for Red as the Six Eyes helps him properly understand the complex nature of cursed energy needed to perform a reverse cursed technique.
Gojo has also been able to come up with ways to prevent the toll the Six Eyes's processing power has on him. He can use it to set the Limitless' Infinity ability to automatic to instantly read an incoming projectile danger using it's mass, speed, and shape among other factors, while simultaneously using the Six Eyes to calculate a reverse cursed technique automatically, to keep their brain fresh at all times. Although even with the use of a reverse cursed technique, the Six Eyes can still tire him out, he worked out a way to reduce it's drawbacks even further by covering his eyes, still able to see in a manner similar to a high resolution thermography. Objects that lack cursed energy can be discerned through the blindfold by reading the residuals and flow of the cursed energy surround them. It seems that he only needs to fully release the Six Eyes in order to utilize advanced Limitless techniques such as Hollow Purple and Unlimited Void.
Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Satoru has displayed incredible levels of martial arts prowess: His Limitless aside, he displays a highly methodical and refined fighting style, precisely striking at the enemy's weak point and skillfully using martial arts techniques. This is shown by how not only did he easily overwhelm and tossed aside Jogo with multiple physical strikes, but even with his Limitless deactivated, he is still quite able to easily overpower both Jogo and Hanami, shocking them with his combat prowess. He was also a capable teacher in martial arts, as he successfully trained Yuji and Megumi both to become powerful hand-to-hand fighters.
Immense Strength: Satoru possesses tremendous physical strength to easily overpower powerful curses without a problem, delivering powerful punches and throwing Jogo a considerable distance with a single kick during their fight, as well as easily breaking off Jogo's arm and ripping off Hanami's roots as well as later on tearing apart transfigured humans effortlessly.
Immense Speed: Satoru is an extremely fast fighter, managing to follow the movements of Jogo effortlessly and throwing almost imperceptible punches and kicks. He was shown to be able to move faster than the eye can perceive. Satoru can also eliminate a thousand transfigured humans in five minutes.
Great Intellect and Knowledge: Gojo is quite tactical and capable of figuring out his opponent's plan with minimum information. He has also shown to be extremely adaptable to any enemy he has ever faced so far, knowing precisely what to do to counter their techniques and find ways to defeat them. Gojo was able to easily come up with ways to fend off and overwhelm Jogo, Hanami, Choso and Mahito while limiting property damage and casualty to minimum and even managed to neutralize their ultimate strategy of endangering innocents and seemingly putting him in a situation to where his only option is to use Unlimited Void and kill them all by quickly coming up with a strategy to only use his Domain Expansion for a brief amount of time, displaying remarkable cunning and emotional warfare skill, as he easily tricked Hanami into undoing his Domain Amplification and outright goaded Jogo into stopping his attack by reminding him of Hanami's condition, even accurately calculating that Jogo won't kill any innocents as soon as he killed Hanami. He was also fully aware of and able to explain why the current jujutsu world is so disorganized and unprepared against curses and he has repeatedly been able to easily intercept and deduce attempts from the jujutsu higher-ups to kill Yuji and dispose of him and he even came up with a strategy by telling Yuta to take care of Yuji should he be defeated. His knowledge of jujutsu sorcery and cursed energy is immense and he was able to train and pass on many skills to Yuji and Megumi regarding how to control their cursed energy.
