Season 1[]
Briarwoods arc[]
Scanlan and his friends went to a tavern in Emon. While his crew were busy drinking and fighting, Scanlan was preparing to have sex with the barkeep's daughter after serenating her with a song. The mood gets interrupted however, when Percy gets sent crashing through the door to the room. As soon as Percy leaves, Scanlan tries to get right back to business until the barkeep throws him and the rest of Vox Machina out. After a brief discussion on how they don't work as a team, Scanlan leaves to urinate. As he did so, he found a wanted poster for mercenaries to kill a creature terrorizing the area. Scanlan shows it to his friends, presenting them with an opportunity to make money.
They make it to the Council of Tal'dorei, and Scanlan introduces themselves with a song. After careful consideration, Uriel agrees and Lady Allura flies them to the expected threat was. They pass through a humble village on the way. The further they hike, they realize the tracks they are following stops. A lamb pops out of the bushes, putting the team's guard down for a moment. Until the real threat appears, revealing to be a blue dragon called Brimscythe. Scanlan reacts with fear, but tries to help fight the dragon with "Scanlan's hand", but it does nothing. Eventually, the dragon sends rocks falling on the party, seemingly killing them. As he flies away, the party makes it out of the rubble thanks to Keyleth's vines.
Scanlan is among the party members opting to abandon the mission for the sake of staying alive. But when they return to the village they passed through, finding it had been destroyed by Brimscythe, and all its inhabitants were dead, Scanlan played his lute somberly, "Trying to come up with a rhyme for dead dragon," prompting the rest of the party to commit themselves to the mission as well.
The party returns to Emon, informing Uriel that while they did survive the fight, the dragon was still at large. Uriel made the decision to bring the fight to the dragon, dismissing Vox Machina from the palace. Scanlan tried to make sure that Uriel's offer was still on the table as he was being pushed out, but his pleas fell on deaf ears. Vex'ahlia then reveals she felt the presence of someone working with the dragon in the council, meaning one of them was a mole. Scanlan claims the mole is probably Allura because "[doesn't] trust anyone prettier than [him]". Vex shoots him down claiming it to be Fince, before she assigns Grog & Scanlan to the task of looking for Fince, much to Scanlan's boredom. Fed up with the seemingly fruitlessness of the mission, Scanlan decides to go to the nearest brothel.
That was until he noticed Sir Fince wearing a hood walking around and decided to start following him. He and Grog followed Fince to a large mansion, where the latter enters and locks the door, though not before drawing a blade. Scanlan rushes off to tell the others just as Grog asks him to get him a sandwich. Scanlan caves to the request before getting the others. Scanlan tries to unlock the door with a magic song to no avail. Eventually, Vax manages to pick the lock. As they go inside, they look seek Fince and finally catch him stealing documents from Krieg's cellar. He tries to explain himself to the party until Krieg murders him. The party gives chase to him, landing themselves in a room filled with magic. Grog suddenly becomes infatuated with a pornographic painting, much to Keyleth's disgust. She throws a book at him, which bounces off his head and reveals a hidden portal. Scanlan tries to stay behind out of fear of the uncertainty until Vax pulls him along.
They go threw it, revealing a huge treasure trove and they become ecstatic. Scanlan decides whatever Uriel offered them was nothing compared to this. Vex comes to her senses however, and informs the party that this is the dragon's hoard. Krieg shows back up and reveals to have actually been the dragon all along. Another fight ensues and Brimscythe begins to manhandle the party in battle once again. However, the team devise a plan, and Scanlan creates an illusion of the party arguing and Brimscythe shoots it. With Brimscythe hoodwinked, the party each play their part in killing the dragon with Scanlan throwing Vax with his "Scanlan's Hand" so he can slit the dragon's throat before Grog deals the final blow. Grog takes one of Brimsythe's teeth as proof of their victory while Scanlan credits this. The place begins to cave in and the party run, with Scanlan trying to salvage as much treasure as he can. They return to the council, who congratulates and thanks Vox Machina for their victory, giving them a deed and key to their new keep as a reward.
The morning after their first night in the keep, Scanlan is eating breakfast with his friends, annoyed by Keyleth's loud chipperness. Lady Allura shows up to call for their audience. She informs them that Sovereign Uriel expects them at his banquet. Scanlan asks Pike if she would like to be his date there, promising to be on his "best worst behavior". Pike politely declines. They eventually make it to the banquet the following night. Begrudgingly leaving their weapons at the main booth. Scanlan and the others disperse as they get inside. Scanlan comes across a man who asks him if he knows where the facilities were. Scanlan intentionally interprets it as him wanting to do something sexual with him.
After that, Scanlan and the others reconnect just in time to see Percy in a state of anger and paranoia, explaining that the Briarwoods, who just showed up to the banquet took everything from him when he was a teenager. Upon learning they would be staying over night, Vax offers to sneak into their room. Scanlan suggests a safe word for Vax in case things go south, which Grog suggests should be "Jenga". The party, excluding Vax then attend Uriel's table. As they sit down at Uriel's dinner table, dinner goes by and Scanlan compliments Delilah for her choice of beads, claiming he has a set just like them, but not the kind one wears.
After Percy has an outburst from a lie about the de Rolos spewed by Delilah, the party takes him away to talk in private. Percy tells them the Briarwoods killed his entire family and conquered Whitestone, surprising the party. After learning who the Briarwoods really were, the party decides to leave and save Vax, as he was in the room they would be staying in.
After Vex sensed that Vax was in imminent danger, Scanlan offers to cause a distraction while the others saved the rogue. Scanlan grabs everyone's attention as he performs a dirty song called, "Pull my Beads of Love." When the song finishes, he goes outside to catch up with the others, proud of his performance. His mode then drops when he sees that his friends were being detained by the guards.
Scanlan and the others are taken before Uriel who reprimands them for attacking the Briarwoods and thus, ruining the banquet. Lady Allura calms him down, promising to handle the party accordingly, by putting them under house arrest. They are then confined to their keep and their weapons are taken away by Captain Jarett's men. One of them takes Scanlan's lute as well, much to the gnome's dismay. Scanlan tries to read the journal Vax swiped from Delilah, but can't make out the words due to it being in another language. Percy instead finds a secret opening in the room that leads to a hallway, which leads to a way out, but Jarett catches them and has them separated. Scanlan is locked up with Vex & Vax. The gnomes decides to make a sandwich to pass the time.
Once Grog escapes from his confinement with Pike, he warns the others, including Scanlan about incoming wraiths. Understanding they were under attack, Jarett gives them weapons to fend off the wraiths.
The wraiths gain the upper hand at the start of the battle as they were in darkness and could not by hit by their victims. That comes to a change however, when Keyleth conjures light, rendering the wraiths vulnerable. The party could finally hit and destroy them. Once they did, this convinced Jarett to let them go and stop whoever it was who sent them, returning Scanlan his lute.
The party begins to leave in the morning but Pike remains behind as she needs to reconnect with the Everlight. Scanlan gives her a good luck wave, worrying to himself if she will be okay. They then devise a plan for getting what they need in order to start their journey. Grog takes part in stealing a humble horse carriage. Scanlan tries to read Delilah's journal, but the language it is written in is not what he is fluent in, mistranslating the word, "Ziggurat".
Vex has Percy stop the cart when she feels a disturbing presence. It turns out to be monstrous canine creatures sent by Delilah. They capture Scanlan as he had Delilah's book. The party chases after them all the way to a cliff. The chase gets to the point where the dog holding Scanlan jumps over the cliff with the gnomes, seemingly killing him. The party mourns for a moment until Scanlan reveals to have saved himself with his magic hand.
When they find a spot to make camp, Grog watches Scanlan use a scroll he looted from Brimscythe's cave. He watched with fascination as the gnome turned into various things, ranging from a gnome, a unicorn and an elven woman. Later that night, Grog suggests the party goes around explaining the craziest thing they have ever killed. When it was Scanlan's turn, he spoke about a woman he was having a one-night-stand with, which puts the party at an anti-climax at first until Scanlan continues. He explains said woman was actually a two headed monster in disguise.
When they finally make it to Whitestone, they see it in the desecrated state that it is. Percy later gains their attention by pointing to seven corpses hung from the Sun Tree, each corpse dressed as a member of Vox Machina, showing them the Briarwoods were anticipating them. Though unsettled by this, the party had to move on as a resistance member called them over to hide with them as a zombie giant was heading their direction. The party is later taken to Keeper Yennen, who takes them to a secret hideout, with Scanlan stating how bad it looks inside and out. The party later try to devise plans to rescue Archibald Desnay, after Yennen informed Percy he had been captured. Scanlan suggested drinking potions he stole from Brimscythe's lair and using them to his advantage, although he did not know what they would do to him yet. Since Scanlan's idea was one of the bad ones, Vex devised her own plan. Scanlan, Vax, and Percy would break through the back door of the dungeons to break Archie out. Scanlan and Vax however, frequently struggle to get the door open. A guard eventually opens the door to empty a bucket full of urine, accidentally splashing it on the two, who kill him before running in. The party reconnects and they save Archie, only to be stopped in their tracks by Sir Kerrion Stonefell. His guards grab Scanlan and prepare to kill him until he saves himself with an illusion spell to confuse the guards. Scanlan frees himself and makes a run for it. He does show up later to help fight though, only to need being rescued a lot. When things die down, he notices Percy was missing.
They all flee from the prison, returning to Yennen's hideout. Later, the party run off on a rescue mission for Cassandra, while spying on Professor Anders when they find the building the two are located in. Scanlan suggests he lures the guards away from Anders' house, which Vex sharply objects to. Scanlan assured her that everything that made Scanlan himself would be enough for the solo mission to go successfully. But once he's on his own, he very quickly regrets his decision. Despite this, he follows through with his antics by using his magic to lure guards away from their posts. He then sneaks in through the window of Duke Vedmire's house, unluckily finding him on the chamberpot.
Vedmire calls the guards to take care of Scanlan, who uses his first potion. It turns out to be one that teleports him away from danger in a natural manner. Once it wore off, he drank the second potion, which made him tiny, making him quicker and more dexterous, dodging the duke's attempts to stomp on him. Once that one wore off two, he drank the final one, which did not hit right away. Once he was grabbed by the guards and cornered by Vedmire, it happened. Scanlan uncontrollably started breathing fire on everything. That got the guards to release him. Scanlan rushed into Vedmire's trophy room and pulled out the scroll that helped him polymorph. He decided to sing the command that got him to do so. It turned him into a triceratops, which helped him kill many of the guards. Eventually, that wore off two and Vedmire chased him to the roof, where he beat the gnome in a fight of raw strength easily. When the duke had Scanlan pinned however, Scanlan used his energy to charge a lightning bolt from his crotch, shocking the duke and forcing him off. Scanlan made a quick getaway with his magic hand, telling Vedmire he's "been a lovely audience".
Celebrating his victory with a song, Scanlan made his way to return to his friends' hideout, only to get distracted by what he thought was a couple making out. He tried to join in, only to realize it was a zombie eating a victim. He informs his friends about it once he finally catches up with them. They made a run for it to Archibald's hideout. They were not safe there for long however, as zombies burst through the door and attacked. They managed to slay the zombies, but Scanlan got bit. Since it would spread, Grog offered to amputate the arm, but Scanlan accepted it only as a last resort. They eventually move out of the hideout, where they find a zombie giant heading their way. Duke Vedmire showed up with two more giants, ordering them to kill Vox Machina. The party split up, not ready to fight them, but one of the giants threw a piece of roof in front of Scanlan. Vedmire called out to the gnome, ready to settle the score. Scanlan tries to lie his way out of it. When that didn't work, he tried to shock Vedmire again, but the duke adapted from their last encounter. Scanlan then ran from the Duke, who gave chase. Archibald saw this, and saved Scanlan's life by fighting Vedmire head on, dying in the process.
Try as they may have, more zombies showed up, making the denizens of Whitestone lose hope. But Percy gave a rousing speech to encourage everyone to keep fighting. Scanlan could not perform any magic with his lute due to his decaying arm. when things seemed hopeless, Pike returned, coolly greeting the party. Scanlan looked at her with astonishment. Pike noticed his decaying arm and healed it. Scanlan asked her to marry him and she jokingly agreed to it. Now the fight was much easier. Grog had Scanlan throw him at one of the incoming zombie giants. When the zombie hoard finally lets up, Vox Machina, along with Cassandra hunt down the Briarwoods. They go through an underground dungeon on the way. A prisoner calls out to them asking to be freed in exchange for helping them find the Briarwoods, but Percy only turns his pepperbox on the prisoner. He tries to kill her before Cassandra stops him. Percy reveals to the party that the prisoner is Dr. Anna Ripley, a former Briarwood pawn.
Scanlan pulls Percy over to address the escalating situation of the later becoming a merciless killer whenever he sees someone on The List. Pike divines the fact that there is another force inside of Percy that was the progenitor of his needless violence. Despite this, Percy assures the party he would sort the dark side of himself out once their endeavor was over. After Percy takes her prisoner, Ripley leads the party to the Ziggurat. On the way, Scanlan attempts to make a verbal advance towards Cassandra, only for Percy to dismiss it. Eventually, they make it to the crypt of the dungeon, where they realize it was holding corpses that were animated by Delilah's magic. When the fight is over, Ripley leads the party to a room, revealed to be a residuem manufacturing room, while Scanlan briefly mistakes the residuem for drugs. Suddenly, Cassandra traps the party (Save Vax who managed to escape) in the room, with the Briarwoods revealing themselves to have brainwashed Cassandra. Sylas then possess Vax to set off an acid trap to kill the party. However, Scanlan manages to conjure his magic hand to lift himself and the others above the acid while the rest of the party, with Ripley's help figured out how to reverse the trap. Scanlan strains himself keeping everybody in thin air right up until all of the acid is drained. They all continue their journey to the ziggurat.
