No matter their strength, for a human, to fight a monster means to let go of their humanity and become an even bigger monster.
~ Schierke

Schierke (シールケ in Japanese) is a major character in the Berserk series. She is a young "witch-in-training", a disciple of the witch Flora and a member of the Black Swordsman Party.

She is voiced by Chiwa Saitō in the Japanese sub of Berserk 2016 and by Mela Lee in its English dub.

Appearance[]

Schierke has dark green hair and is slim and small in stature, standing at roughly the same height as Isidro. Her regular attire consists of a robe and a typical witch hat, both purple in coloration. She is accompanied by an elf named Evarella who usually sits atop her hat.

Personality[]

Schierke is a precociously intelligent but socially inept young magic user apprenticed to the benevolent witch Flora, Schierke first encounters Guts' companions when she saves Casca, Farnese, and Isidro from a pack of trolls in the woods near Enoch village.

She and Isidro immediately dislike each other, as she views the rambunctious boy as an uncivilized 'monkey' while he sees her as a stuck-up know-it-all. She lends her powers to Guts and his companions at the request of Flora, who wishes them to stop the rampaging trolls in return for her help on their quest.

Schierke is at first a reluctant companion, as she distrusts the non-magical folk and their Church who have suppressed magic through their intolerance. She has a strong sense of justice, and is often appalled at how humans mistreat both nature and each other. However, she gradually warms up to her new friends, especially towards Guts whom she develops a crush.

Life[]

Although it is unconfirmed exactly where Schierke was born or who her parents were, it can be assumed that she has lived most if not all of her life in the forest under the tutelage of Flora.

She aids Guts' group against a number of trolls when Casca wanders off alone, and then again with a troll infestation in the nearby Enoch village, where she shows just how powerful magic can be. Schierke is then forced to leave her home- and Flora- behind forever when they face an attack by Griffith's demonic followers. Her magical ability and knowledge of the world are impressive for a child her age.

As of the most recent manga chapters, she remains travelling alongside Guts and company aboard Roderick's ship bound for Elfheim.

Trivia[]

  • Before the release of volume 27, her name was often translated as Silke.
  • Schierke (derived from a word in local dialect meaning ‘unspoilt wood’ ) is the name of a village located in the Harz Mountain range of Northern Germany. In present day it is part of the state of Saxony-Anhalt and is now considered part of the town of Wernigerode. Schierke lies below the highest mountain in the region, the Brocken, which for uncounted centuries has been connected to legends and fairy tales concerning witches, devils and other supernatural beings. The summit of the Brocken is held as the traditional place of revelry for witches on Walpurgisnacht (April 30th) (Notably this was used in a scene of Faust by Goethe) Modern-day Schierke is host to a festival every year on Walpurgisnacht.
  • Schierke is also essentially a homonymn of Circe, a famous witch from Ancien Greek mythology who was involved in a number of well-known epic tales, most notably The Oddysey. Given that both characters are witches, it is likely that the name is a reference.
