~ Scooby-Doo's most famous catchphrase. |
Scoobert Doobert "Scooby Dooby" Doo III, also simply known as Scooby-Doo, is the titular main protagonist of the Hanna-Barbera animated popular franchise of the same name.
He is the pet of Norville "Shaggy" Rogers and his three closest friends, Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, and Velma Dinkley in many iterations, including the original series, is regarded as a unique, strong, lovable, and very large Great Dane dog who is able to speak in broken English, unlike most other dogs in his reality, and usually puts the letter R in front of words spoken. Other incarnations, such as A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, present talking dogs like Scooby as quite common.
He was voiced by the late Don Messick, who also voiced Droopy and Hamton J. Pig.
From 1998 to 2001, he was voiced by Scott Innes who also voiced Shaggy around that time.
Since 2002, he is currently voiced by Frank Welker, who also voices Fred Jones in the same franchise. Welker also voices Curious George in the animated franchise of the same name, Garfield Cat in the animated franchise of the same name, Bronx in Gargoyles, Zilla Junior in Godzilla: The Series, and Dragon in the Shrek franchise.
Original Incarnation[]
Early Life[]
Scooby was born as a puppy. One day, he was adopted by a young boy named Norville "Shaggy" Rogers. The two of them became best friends. Scooby and Shaggy eventually met Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, and Velma Dinkley and grew extremely close with them by solving mysteries with them. Scooby and his siblings Ruby-Doo, Skippy-Doo, and Howdy-Doo were born in the Doo-ville Veterinary Hospital in the town of Doo-ville not to far away from Coolsville.
His home was Doo Manor, which is located at the Knittingham Puppy Farm at the edge of Coolsville and Doo-ville. From an early age, Scooby and Shaggy have developed a fear of monsters. This is because their first babysitter looked like a monster. Then they ran into a fish monster as they tried to get away from their babysitter.
In his younger days, Scooby-Doo, along with rest of Mystery Inc., became friends with Arlene Wilcox.
In the Scooby-Doo Goes Hollywood special, it was revealed that Scooby was bought as a puppy by Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy, at Grillo's Pet Store and that all four teenagers were his owners.

Personality[]
Scooby-Doo and Shaggy share several personality traits, mostly being cowardly and gluttonous. But their friends (Velma, Daphne, and Fred) encourage them to go after the costumed villains, usually with "Scooby Snacks", a biscuit-like dog treat or cookie snack (usually shaped like a bone or, in later versions of the cartoons, Scooby's dog tag), though Scooby's inherent loyalty and courage does often force him to take a more heroic stands to save his human companions. Whenever Scooby is very happy, he loves to respond by nuzzling his friends lovingly or lick their faces. Scooby is also shown to be fond towards women like Miyumi and the Hex Girls.
Scooby has a speech impediment and tends to pronounce most words as if they begin with an "R", though most characters are able to understand him perfectly. In most iterations, he keeps his sentences relatively short, usually using charades for anything longer than three or four words.
His catch phrase, typically howled at the end of every episode, is "Scooby-Dooby-Doo!" or "Rooby-Rooby-Roo". He also normally says, at least once per episode, "Ruh-roh, Raggy" ("Uh-oh, Shaggy"). His quirky chuckle is often also in an episode, but it changed slightly when Frank Welker took over the voice of Scooby. Scooby's voice is similar to that of the earlier character Astro the Dog from The Jetsons.
Scooby is like Shaggy in dog form and Shaggy is like Scooby in human form. Scooby is always happy-go-lucky, level-headed, and doesn't let anyone get him worked up. He has no hate for anybody even when somebody disappoints him. Scooby is ready to forgive. He's an even-tempered, friendly dog who only wants to relax, eat, and just have a good time. Much like his owner Shaggy, Scooby has shown to have strength and is athletic, but those traits only kick in when he gets frightened.
Relatives[]
Aside from his nephew Scrappy, relatives of Scooby-Doo shown during the series include:
- Dandy-Doo: Scooby's late paternal great-grandfather, who got rich because his master Mr. Dimwit died and left all his money to him.
- Dixie-Doo: Scooby's cousin, she is a singer at the Delta Queen showboat.
- Horton-Doo: Scooby's uncle, who is declared a "mad scientist". The gang thought he was Nasty-Doo but he was actually innocent.
- Smiley-Doo: An ancestor of Scooby-Doo. He is the best friend of Gabby, an ancestor to Shaggy Rogers.
- Spooky-Doo: Scooby's cousin, who was the former owner of Doo Manor. Scooby and Shaggy are afraid of him and Scooby has even said that Spooky-Doo is the family's weirdo.
- Whoopsy-Doo: Scooby's cousin, who works as a clown. Whoopsy is owned by Gaggy Rogers, one of Shaggy's uncles.
- Yankee Doodle Doo: An ancestor of Scooby-Doo, who is owned by McBaggy Rogers and ancestor of Shaggy Rogers.
- Dooby Dooby Doo: Scooby's cousin, who is a professional singer.
- Scooby-Dee: Scooby's famous movie star cousin, who was kidnapped by the Phantom of Milo Booth. She was later saved by the Scooby gang. Although she was Scooby-Dum and Scooby-Doo's cousin, they were both in love with her; Scooby-Dee kissed them at the end.
- Scooby-Dum: Scooby's cousin, who sometimes has helped the gang solving mysteries. He was with them when they fought the Gator Ghoul, the Headless Horseman, the Phantom of Milo Booth and Gramps the Vamp.
- Grandpa Scooby II: Scooby' grandfather, who lives in Scooby Manor.
- Great-Grandpa Scooby I: Scooby's late great grandpa and Grandpa Scooby's late father, who was a Civil War hero.
Appearance and anatomy[]
Scooby is brown from head to toe with several distinctive black spots on his upper body and doesn't seem to have a melanistic mask. He is generally a quadruped, but displays bipedal 'human' characteristics occasionally. Scooby also has thumbs and can use his front paws like hands. He has a black nose and wears an off-yellow, diamond shaped-tagged blue collar with an "SD" (his initials) and has four toes on each foot and unlike other dogs, Scooby only has one pad on the sole of each of his feet (so that it was easier to draw in the Scooby-Doo Annuals).
Scooby has a fully prehensile tail he can use to swing from or press buttons. Both his head and tail are malleable and useful as a communication aid or creating a distraction.

The gang also has an encounter with Dracula, his wife, the Wolfman, Frankenstein's Monster, the Mummy, Gill-Man and the Invisible Man in The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries episode, "A Halloween Hassle at Dracula's Castle" when the monsters are being haunted by the Ghost of Dr. Van Helsing.
