Scorpion is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Liu Kang) of the Mortal Kombat franchise, serving as both a villain and an anti-hero.

Scorpion's catchphrase was voiced by Ed Boon. He was physically portrayed by Daniel Pesina in the first two games, John Turk from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 -Mortal Kombat 4/Gold), and Sal Divita in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Scorpion was voiced by Simeon Norfleet, who also voiced Jax Briggs in Shaolin Monks and Armageddon.

Biography[]

Birth[]

Scorpion was born as Hanzo Hasashi to the Shirai Ryu Ninja clan. He was among the best warriors in the clan. As a result, he earned the name Scorpion due to his impressive abilities.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero[]

Everything changed when he was given a mission by the evil Quan Chi to steal the Map of Elements from the Order of Light's Temple. While he was there, he was killed by Sub-Zero, a member of their rivals, the Lin Kuei. As a result, his entire family and clan were slaughtered by Quan Chi as a payment to Sub-Zero. Because of the fact he died, his soul was sent to the Netherrealm, While in there, he fought Sub-Zero again but was once again defeated. Scorpion vowed revenge on Sub-Zero due to his family's demise and his defeat.

Mortal Kombat (1992)[]

Two years later, he was finally able to leave the Netherrealm and return to Earthrealm. He went there to participate in Shang Tsung's tournament to defeat Sub-Zero and avenge his family as well as his clan due to Quan Chi's deception. He was not able to make it to Sub-Zero at first, but after Liu Kang defeated Goro, he got his opportunity to kill Sub-Zero while he was unguarded. He did exactly that, finally getting revenge in his mind, so he was sent back to the Netherrealm.

Mortal Kombat II[]

Due to being in the Netherrealm, he was able to find out about a tournament hosted by Shao Kahn, the ruler of the Outworld. He was angered when he found out that Sub-Zero somehow returned back to life, unaware that it was actually his younger brother. So in order to finish what he started, Scorpion entered Shao Khan's tournament. However, during one of Sub-Zero's battles, he witnessed him sparing his opponent's life, which caused Scorpion to have some doubts about this person. He would eventually find out that this Sub-Zero was not his murderer, but in fact, his younger brother having taken up his older brother's mantle. To atone for slaying Sub-Zero's older brother, he decided to dedicate himself to protecting the new Sub-Zero.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3[]

When Shao Khan invaded Earthrealm and tried to conquer Netherrealm but failed, Scorpion was accidentally set free. He initially didn't pledge allegiance to anyone, but when Shao Kahn noticed Scorpion's expertise in fighting, he decided to recruit him to his army. The alliance didn't last very long, however, as Scorpion discovered that when he learned Sub-Zero was one of Earth's chosen warriors and therefore one of Shao Kahn's targets. Due to this, Scorpion turned on Shao Khan and helped Earthrealm defeat him. They succeed and because of that, Scorpion returns back to the Netherrealm.

Mortal Kombat 4[]

At some point, Quan Chi was somehow able to convince that the new Sub-Zero was in some way responsible for his wife and child's death. After he was tricked into believing this, he swore revenge on Sub-Zero. However, just before Scorpion was about to kill Sub-Zero, Quan Chi appeared and told him that he was actually responsible for his family's death to get Scorpion to break his promise of protecting Sub-Zero. Quan Chi then attempted to banish Scorpion to the Netherrealm, but Scorpion, thinking quickly, tackled Quan Chi and banished both of them to the Netherrealm.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance[]

During the many years that Scorpion and Quan Chi were in the Netherrealm, Quan Chi would be tortured by Scorpion. Quan Chi seemed to have very little chance of escaping because his powers were slowly weakening while Scorpions was getting stronger (the reason for this is they were in a different part of the realm). To escape, Quan Chi struck a deal with Drahmin and Moloch. The two fought off Scorpion, which gave Quan Chi enough time to escape the Netherrealm through a portal, Scorpion following him. Scorpion continued to chase Quan Chi until he found his way to Shang Tsung's Palace. While he was at the palace, he was ambushed by Drahmin and Moloch, who had just escaped the Netherrealm. Scorpion tried to fight them off, but they overpowered him and threw him into the Soulnado, believing it would eliminate the ninja once and for all.

Mortal Kombat: Deception[]

As seen in the Konquest mode, set in the years before Deadly Alliance, during his pursuit of Quan Chi, Scorpion encountered Shujinko, who offered his aid in finding him, as he had returned to the Netherrealm to absorb negative energy. Shujinko requested that Scorpion teach him his kombat in return for his aid, which the spectre was initially dismissive of. Persuaded that Shujinko's aid would be useful in tracking Quan Chi, Scorpion agreed to train him. Afterwards, sympathising with him, Shujinko agreed to remain in the Netherrealm, and found his quarry. Scorpion proceeded to confront him, and after besting him, vengefully chased after him, leading into Quan Chi's alliance with Drahmin and Moloch.

In the present, Scorpion was able to escape into the void and meet the Elder Gods. There, he also witnessed Raiden's sacrifice and Onaga beginning his conquest. The Elder Gods were aware of his presence as well as the incredible skills and abilities he possessed, so the made him the champion of the Elder Gods. His first mission was to destroy Onaga before he conquered all the realms. Scorpion is next seen in Konquest mode before Onaga goes to retrieve the Amulet from Quan Chi. Scorpion fights Shujinko in the name of the Elder Gods, but Shujinko won the battle. In his ending, it is said that Scorpion tracked Onaga through the realms to fight him, but it's unknown if he fought him, as it is known that Shujinko defeated Onaga.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon[]

Later on, Scorpion's alliance with the Elder Gods had fallen apart. This was due to the fact that they promised to resurrect the Shirai Ryu clan along with his wife and son, which although they did, they were brought back as Hellspawn. Scorpion was angry at their betrayal, and vowed revenge on the Elder Gods by ensuring Armageddon.

When Armageddon is summoned, Scorpion joins the Forces of Darkness. In his non-canon ending, Scorpion destroyed Blaze, and his power was able to truly resurrect the Shirai Ryu, and his family. However, Quan Chi spitefully stole away his son, and Scorpion and his clan chased after the sorcerer once more. Scorpion was seen fighting Sub-Zero one last time, and had to killed for good by his on and off rival.

Quotes[]

It wasn't enough to kill me! You had to destroy every last remnant of my being, including my wife and child!
~ Scorpion thinking that Sub-Zero killed his family.
You cannot kill a dead man! You have defeated my physical form when my soul is eternal! You will pay for the massacre of my clan and family!
~ Scorpion if he is defeated by Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat 4.
By defeating you, Sub-Zero, I have avenged the death of my family and clan. Now my soul can finally rest.
~ Scorpion believing he avenged his family's death
Quan Chi killed my family and clan and then deceived me into believing Sub-Zero was their murderer. I have been corrupted by Quan Chi's wickedness. Now it is his turn to suffer.
~ Scorpion
In my haste to confront my nemesis, Quan Chi, I was ambushed by two oni and cast into a powerful soulnado. I would surely have been torn apart by the souls trapped there had I not managed to escape in the Voids. It was there that I first set eyes on the fabled Elder Gods. I would be forever changed by this encounter. While in the Void, I witnessed, along with the Elder Gods, the death of Raiden and the re-emergence of the Dragon King. Suddenly aware of my presence, the Elder Gods transformed me into their servant and gave me a new purpose: to prevent the Dragon King from merging the realms.
~ Scorpion's first person Deception bio.
