GET OVER HERE!
~ Scorpion's most famous quote.
Your soul will burn!
~ Scorpion in Injustice: Gods Among Us
My name is Hanzo Hasashi! You killed my wife! My son! And then you burrowed your way into my head. Misdirected my vengeance. Cost me my one chance to have them restored!
~ Scorpion to Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat X.

Hanzo Hasashi, formerly known as Scorpion, is one of the main characters in the Mortal Kombat: Titan Trilogy, both a reboot and spin-off of the Mortal Kombat franchise.

He is an undead ninja resurrected by the sorcerer Quan Chi and served as his right hand for years, with promises of avenging the Shirai-Ryu Clan who were thought to have been killed by Sub-Zero. However, after meeting Takeda Takahashi and finding out the truth of his past, he has a change of heart and separates from the sorcerer, while restoring the Shirai-Ryu Clan.

He is voiced by Patrick Seitz in Mortal Kombat (2011) and Mortal Kombat X. In Mortal Kombat 11, he is voiced by Ron Yuan, who also voiced Taiga Saejima in the Like a Dragon series.

History[]

Birth[]

Scorpion was born has Hanzo Hasashi to the Shirai Ryu Ninja clan. He was among the best warriors in the clan. As a result, he earned the name Scorpion do to his impressive abilities.

Mortal Kombat (2011)[]

Scorpion's backstory is similar to his original version. He was once a member of the Shirai Ryu, a clan of ninjas known for bringing Ninjitsu and other secret martial arts to Japan from China. He also had a wife and child. However, his entire clan and his wife and child were killed by Quan Chi who disguised himself as Sub-Zero, a ninja for the Lin Kuei rival clan, to frame him. Scorpion would die but was revived by Quan Chi to be his servant.

Raiden convinces Scorpion to spare Bi-Han's life in exchange for the Elder Gods resurrecting the Shirai Ryu clan. Quan Chi provokes Scorpion having him kill Bi-Han instead by showing his family's death. This leads Kuai Liang, who at the time calls himself "Tundra," to adopt the Sub-Zero mantle somewhat earlier than he did in the original timeline. The younger Sub-Zero later defeats Scorpion, but is prevented from destroying the undead warrior when his Lin Kuei comrades apprehend him on order by the clan's Grandmaster.

Injustice: Gods Among Us[]

Scorpion joined the cast of 2013's Injustice: Gods Among Us as a downloadable character. In his single-player battle ending, wondering how he ended up in this world, Scorpion confronted the demon Trigon, who summoned him out of anger that he had left his demon army and robbed him the glory of defeating the One-Earth High Councilor (Superman). Scorpion fights and defeats Trigon before taking command of his demonic forces, which he plans to use to rule the world.

Mortal Kombat X Comic[]

Scorpion appears as a major character in the MKX comics.

Mortal Kombat X[]

In Mortal Kombat X, which takes place two years after the previous game, Scorpion still serves Quan Chi. Raiden and his allies later restore him, Kuai Liang, and Jax to full life, freeing them from the necromancer's influence. Over the course of the next two decades, the restored Hanzo Hasashi reforms the Shirai Ryu, making a new clan dedicated to the protection of Earth, and trains Takeda Takahashi, son of his ally and fellow warrior Kenshi.

Sometime later, Hanzo is invited by Sub-Zero to form an alliance between the Shirai Ryu and the Lin Kuei. Hanzo is skeptical of this, especially when Frost attacks Hanzo out of a blind belief that the Shirai Ryu are the enemies. But when Sub-Zero stops Frost and reveals proof Quan Chi and Sektor were responsible for the destruction of the Shirai Ryu clan, Hanzo accepts Kuai Liang as an ally.

As the Special Forces capture Quan Chi in hopes of using him to bring back their allies, a revenge-driven Hanzo defeats Sonya, Kenshi, and Johnny, and goes to brutally beat his arch-nemesis. When D'Vorah tries to save him, Hanzo quickly pulls Quan Chi to him and prcoeeds to brutally decapitate the sorcerer, but not before the latter releases Shinnok from his amulet.

Mortal Kombat 11[]

NOTE: Due to there being two Scorpions in this game we will be referring to present Scorpion as Hanzo (as he rejected his title) and past Scorpion as Scorpion

In Mortal Kombat 11, two years after MKX and Shinnok's defeat, Hanzo continues to lead the Shirai Ryu as its Grandmaster. When the keeper of time Kronika attempts to erase Raiden from history, she brings a past version of the undead Scorpion to the present, recruiting him by promising to resurrect his clan and family. Meanwhile, the present-day Hanzo works with Sub-Zero to foil the Lin Kuei assassin turned cyborg called Sektor and his plans to build a Cyber Lin Kuei army for Kronika. They are successful and learn Sektor also played a role in murdering Hanzo's clan and family. After Kronika's forces compromise or destroy most of the bases of Earthrealm's defenders, Hanzo succeeds in recruiting Kharon, ferryman of the dead, and convinces his younger self to turn away from Kronika. He is then killed by the Outworld villain D'Vorah. Dying, Hanzo urges his younger self to abandon vengeance and defend Earthrealm. The younger Scorpion joins the allied forces of Earthrealm and Outworld to stop Kronika.

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath[]

With his present self dead at D'Vorah's hands, the past Scorpion arrives in the Fire Gardens, realizing that his present self was right. As a misunderstanding between both Scorpion and Sub-Zero occurred, their fight from the original timeline did not occur, as both Scorpion and Sub-Zero were interrupted by the presents of Shang Tsung and Fujin. Believing that Fujin is corrupted and under Shang Tsung's control, Sub-Zero freezes the sorcerer, where Scorpion and Sub-Zero team up to fight Fujin, however both are defeated by the God of Wind. After Raiden intervenes and is defeated by his brother, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, and Raiden are told of the future outcome of the timeline that Fujin and Shang Tsung came from. During the debriefing, the group are confronted by Kronika at the Fire Gardens. Kronika freezes everyone in time except Shang Tsung and Fujin who manage to fed off the Keeper of Time with her Crown, weakening her in the process and freeing the others. With a new plan from their knowledge of the future, the group head to the Netherrealm with Kharon's Fleet, the Shaolin, the Tarkata and the Special Forces to invade Kronika's Keep.

Kharon's Fleet carrying Kitana's Outworld forces, along with some of the invading Special Forces, would be overtaken by Shao Kahn and a revived Sindel along with a deceived army of Shokan. Scorpion, nor Sub-Zero are seen on the overtaken fleets, nor are they seen with Raiden and the remaining Special Forces and Shaolin that invade the beachhead of Kronika's Keep and what becomes of both the Spectre and Grandmaster is unknown.

Appearance[]

Scorpion's MK2011 costume was inspired by his namesake, such as the character's abdomen-shaped shoulder pads, the two stinger-handled swords crisscrossed on his back, and the exoskeletal pattern on his hard-shell face mask. Scorpion was included with Sub-Zero, Reptile and Ermac in a bundle of classic costumes from the first Mortal Kombat that was released as downloadable content for the 2011 reboot.

For Injustice: Gods Among Us, he received a new costume designed by comic artist Jim Lee. As of MKX, he has regained his humanity and human identity, depicted with a goatee and mustache and can switch between his human and familiar spectre-like appearance at will.

Scorpion unmasked is known as Inferno Scorpion. This design reappears in the Challenge Tower, fighting Kano in the Netherrealm. His costumes incorporate his namesake more and more with each game, especially his latest redesign. The hilts of his swords now resemble the stingers of scorpions, while his shoulder pads and mouthpiece are also molded after scorpions.

Scorpion's yellow costume is said to have mocked not only Sub-Zero, but also the Lin Kuei, as Takeda (who was a member of the Lin Kuei) developed Ninjutsu, which he considered a superior fighting style to what the Lin Kuei had. He quickly left the Lin Kuei and formed the Shirai Ryu clan, the Lin Kuei's main enemies.

In Injustice: Gods Among Us, in which Scorpion made his appearance as a playable guest character, his appearance is completely original to the game. He now gains an armor with a gem in the middle of its chest looking more like a legendary champion than a ninja, while retaining the scorpion like swords on his back just like the ones from his appearance in Mortal Kombat (2011). This appearance would become a selectable outfit in Mortal Kombat X, and as a playable card in Mortal Kombat Mobile, however in MKX, the swords are absent due to the Ninjutsu Variation.

Personality[]

Scorpion is not completely heartless though as he has a caring and honorable side to him as Hanzo Hasashi, his original human side, but which gets buried and repressed time and time again due to his lust for vengeance. He dearly loved his wife and son Harumi and Satoshi and had good relations with his clan the Shirai Ryu.

But once him, his clan and family was massacred by their rival clan the Lin Kuei, Hanzo was reborn as the vengeful revenant known today as Scorpion.
