Kuai Liang, also known as Scorpion, is one of the main protagonists of the New Era timeline of Mortal Kombat.
Unlike his previous incarnations, Kuai Liang has pyrokinetic abilities which earn him the mantle of Scorpion. He was the second-in-command of the Lin Kuei, but following his brother Bi-Han's betrayal, he and Smoke left the clan and founded a new one to protect Earthrealm and oppose his brother: the Shirai-Ryu, which was named after Harumi Shirai, who became Kuai Liang's wife.
He is voiced by Daisuke Tsuji, who also voiced Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima. Scorpion's catchphrases are voiced by Ed Boon.
Overview[]
In the new timeline, Kuai now assumes the role of Scorpion, replacing Hanzo Hasashi as this timeline's Scorpion. While his brother returns to his original iteration as Sub-Zero, Kuai is now a Pyromancer within the Lin Kuei, instead of a resurrected Wraith like Hanzo was before. Kuai also utilizes many of Hanzo's techniques, such as teleportation, his kunai, fire-based attacks, as well as the ability to summon fire on command. He retains his morals like his other timeline counterparts, with animosity towards Bi-Han for his brother's growing recklessness within the Lin Kuei.
After Bi-Han betrays not only his brothers in the Lin Kuei, but also Liu Kang and Earthrealm, he and his adopted brother Tomas defect from the Lin Kuei and denounce the clan. They aid Liu Kang in stopping an alternate timeline version of Shang Tsung that invaded their timeline. After the second Battle of Armageddon, Kuai Liang marries Harumi Shirai and founded the Shirai Ryu with her and Tomas as a means to protect Earthrealm after the Lin Kuei's treachery. As the clan begins finding new members, Tomas brings in their latest student that he adopts, a boy named Hanzo Hasashi.
Personality[]
Kuai Liang respects old traditions set by his father to be a guardian of Earthrealm and protect its people, however, his brother's growing ambition to become something more than just a clan of protectors has put them at odds, with Kuai Liang being torn between his loyalty to the new Grandmaster and the ways of their father. Likewise, Kuai Liang is reserved, humble, respectful, and honorable man who treats his allies well. When Shang Tsung tempts them, and Bi-Han dives headlong into villainy, a disgusted Kuai Liang rejects the notion and ultimately forms the Shirai Ryu to fulfill the principles that his brother forsook. Khaos Reigns shows a slightly darker side to him, however, as he holds a grudge against Cyrax, a victim of Bi-Han's lies, and has no qualms at all about leaving Bi-Han for dead if rescuing him should prove inconvenient. It's ultimately through Harumi's influence and his gradual reconciliation with Cyrax that Kuai Liang returns to his amicable self.

- Master Martial Artist: Being trained by the Lin Kuei since childhood, Kuai Liang has proven to be one of Earthrealm's best martial artists. His combat training had allowed him to defeat the likes of Sareena, General Shao, Shang Tsung, Rain, Quan Chi, Havik, Darrius, and his older brother, Bi-Han. As a ninja, he is a master in Ninjutsu, but he is also a master in other martial arts styles like Hapkido, Pi Gua, and Moi Fah.
- Master Acrobat: Scorpion's training from the Lin Kuei taught him to incorporate gymnastics and aerobic moves to evade.
- Stealth Mastery: Being a ninja, he has excellent experience in using stealth to his advantage.
- Weapon Mastery: Kuai Liang also is master at using weapons like a kunai and a kusarigama.

After Bi-Han's betrayal and that he corrupted the Lin Kuei, he was willing to break away from his brother's leadership and start a new clan to fulfill the role that the Lin Kuei abandoned. His willpower is unbreakable and shakes off anyone who dare insult or threaten him.

Trivia[]
- While he is exact the same character as Young Sub-Zero, this version of Kuai Liang also takes on some of the original Scorpion's roles history, such as becoming the Grandmaster of the Shirai Ryu Clan, possessing immense fire power, and marrying with Harumi as his only consort.
- Like all previous timelines, Kuai Liang once again gains a scar marked on his face, this time from Bi-Han's ice blade.
- He does have somewhat a friendlier relationship with Johnny Cage in this timeline.
- He asks for his help looking for Bi-Han, but due to mistakenly believing he had an actual detective's skills (Johnny having played one on TV); though possibly Kuai needed the financial aid for his search.
- He does ask about Johnny’s marriage issue as wonder about reconciling with Christine and share their common issue of their own brothers.
- Johnny respects his fighting skills, calling Kuai a "beast" of battle.
- When Reptile mentions Johnny called him this, Kuai is only miffed by the misunderstanding.

During Khaos Reigns, he acts as Cyrax's Kameo during the fight with Sub-Zero, and later as Noob Saibot's Kameo during the first half of his chapter.
