~ Sweet Johnson

Sean "Sweet" Johnson is the deuteragonist and older brother of Carl Johnson in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Description[]

Sweet is the leader of the Grove Street Families street gang, which is based in Ganton, Los Santos. He is the eldest son of Beverly Johnson and the older brother of Carl, Kendl, and Brian. Sweet is also shown to have an unnamed girlfriend in two missions.

Sweet is voiced by Faizon Love, who is best known for his role as Big Worm in the movie Friday.

History[]

Sweet served as one of the top-ranked OGs (Original Gangsters) of the Grove Street Families alongside his brothers, Brian and Carl. However, in 1987, Brian was killed, and Sweet blamed Carl, resulting in Carl leaving Grove Street and Los Santos behind to work for the Leone Family Mafia in Liberty City. Five years later, in 1992, a green Sabre entered the Grove Street cul-de-sac in the dead of night and opened fire on the Johnson House in a drive-by shooting, aiming to silence Sweet and decapitate the Grove Street Families. However, Sweet had been next door at the time, and hearing the gunfire, raced in to check on his mom, Beverly, only to find her brutally murdered by the drive-by, her body riddled with bullet wounds. Sweet was forced to hold his sister Kendl back from seeing the carnage that befell their mom. A short while later, as emergency services raced to the cul-de-sac, Sweet called Carl in Liberty while Kendl wept on the steps and told him the grim news that Beverly was dead.

In short order, Carl was on the next flight back to Los Santos to attend Beverly's funeral as she was buried at the cemetery in Temple. He arrives there with Big Smoke, reunites with Sweet, Kendl, and Ryder, but Sweet quickly gets on his back over walking out on another funeral, still sore over Brian, resulting in Kendl storming off in frustration to go be with her boyfriend. When Carl wonders what the heck happened while he was away, Sweet points out the graves of other Grove Street OGs who have been killed over the last five years, showing how badly the gang has declined since Carl left.

As they head back to Big Smoke's black Perennial to head back to Grove Street, two Ballas in a purple Voodoo suddenly round the corner to try and take them out in a drive-by shooting. Sweet and Big Smoke return fire, but Big Smoke's Perennial is not so lucky, as the Ballas hit the gas tank and destroy it.

Ballas! Drive-by! Incoming!
*Smoke's Perennial blows up from the drive-by*
Aw, motherfucker! My car!!
~ Ryder and Big Smoke

With their main means to head back to Grove Street wrecked by the drive-by, Sweet, Carl, Ryder, and Big Smoke grab some BMX bicycles instead and pedal back to Grove Street, while still being pursued by the Balla Voodoo. Once they reach the Mulholland Intersection, Sweet breaks off to lure the Voodoo away, though the Ballas quickly realize the decoy and catch up to the others just as they are returning to Grove Street and Sweet rejoins them. The Voodoo finally gives up and retreats back to Balla-friendly territory upon reaching the last intersection before the Grove Street cul-de-sac, not risking walking into an ambush by all the GSF homies waiting there defending their home base. Afterwards, Carl offers to stay permanently back in Los Santos to help rebuild the GSF, despite some skepticism from the others. Sweet accepts and after Carl deals with Ryder trying to hold up the local Well Stacked Pizza restaurant again, only to be chased off by the shotgun-wielding employee, Sweet asks for Carl's help with spraying over the gang tags with Grove Street's gang tag (doing all 100 in Los Santos unlocks several respawning weapons back at the Johnson House). From there, Carl continues to help rebuild Grove Street's influence. At one point, Sweet, Carl, Ryder, and Big Smoke head to the local Cluckin' Bell in Willowfield for lunch, only to be spotted by a Balla Voodoo, possibly the same one from before that attacked them while on their way out of the cemetery after Beverly's funeral. Once it realizes that Grove Street is vulnerable, it pulls a screeching U-turn, pulls a drive-by on Sweet and the others, and makes a beeline for Grove Street. Sweet and the others pursue in Sweet's Greenwood and attempt to take out the Voodoo before it reaches Grove Street, and do so successfully, no thanks to Big Smoke stuffing his face while they were dealing with the Ballas.

However, Sweet decides to go see his girl in Seville Boulevard Families territory in Playa del Seville, and is ambushed by the former Grove Street homies as a result, forcing Carl to go rescue him and his girl from the Seville Boulevard set and return them to Grove Street. This incident convinces Sweet that they got to get Temple Drive and Seville Boulevard back into Grove Street to stand a chance against the Ballas as a united gang as this "green on green" gang fighting is not worth it and isn't right to have Grove Street homies fighting each other instead of their real enemies in the Ballas and Los Santos Vagos. Once Carl helps out more with rebuilding Grove Street's influence, the Temple Drive and Seville Boulevard Families agree to rejoin Grove Street, but the meet at the Jefferson Motel to finalize the reunion is interrupted when the motel is raided by the LSPD SWAT team. Sweet was inside at the time as Grove Street's rep, so Carl went in to help him while Ryder and Big Smoke chickened out and fled. Once Carl blasts his way past the SWAT officers and reaches Sweet, they attempt to escape, but are met on the roof by the Police Maverick, callsign Buzzard-1, forcing Carl to shoot it down before he and Sweet head back down to the street, where they are picked up by Ryder and Big Smoke and attempt to flee as the LSPD give pursuit in their cruisers, joined by San Andreas Police Department (SAPD) motorcycle officers. However, after Big Smoke runs a roadblock, they are confronted by the ghetto bird, a Police Maverick, that tries to shred them with its helicopter blades as Big Smoke attempts a dangerous game of Chicken with the chopper as he charges down the alleyway. While the Maverick misses them, they ram the Greenwood through a Sprunk billboard, leaving it to fall to the highway below, crashing into a Xoomer Tanker semi-truck and causing a large explosion. Convinced the four died in the blast, the police call off the pursuit, allowing Sweet and the others to return to Grove Street separately to avoid unwanted attention.

Some time later, thanks to Carl's efforts, Grove Street is back on its feet and stronger than ever. Ready to take the fight to the Ballas, Sweet has the GSF homies load up and meet him under the Mulholland Intersection to have a showdown with the Ballas. Unknown to Sweet, the showdown was a trap. Carl discovers through Kendl's boyfriend Cesar Vialpando, head of the Varrios Los Aztecas, that Big Smoke and Ryder had betrayed the Grove Street Families, siding with the Ballas and LSPD CRASH members Frank Tenpenny and Eddie Pulaski, when he sees the green Sabre that was used to kill Beverly emerge from a garage that Big Smoke, Ryder, Tenpenny, Pulaski, and a couple of Ballas emerge from. Horrified upon learning that Sweet is in grave danger, Carl has Cesar find Kendl and get her to safety while he goes to save Sweet and the homies from the trap. He arrives at the Mulholland Intersection to find Sweet wounded by the ambush, and only a few homies left holding off the Ballas. Refusing to leave his brother behind, Carl aids the homies in fighting off the Ballas until the LSPD arrive. While the remaining Ballas and GSF homies scatter and flee, Carl, refusing to leave Sweet, surrenders to the police. Sweet is arrested, incarcerated, and treated for his wounds in a prison hospital, but becomes a vital bargaining chip to Tenpenny, who threatens Carl with having Sweet transferred to a Balla cell block to be raped and killed by the rival gang members if Carl does not do as he's told and stays away from Los Santos, Big Smoke, and especially CRASH.

Sweet remains in lockup until Carl has returned to Los Santos in force with retaking Madd Dogg's mansion from the Vagos with help from Wu Zi Mu's Triads, the Mountain Cloud Boys. Afterwards, meeting with Mike Toreno, having done everything Toreno wanted from him, Carl receives a phone call from Sweet saying he's been released from prison and is waiting outside LSPD headquarters downtown for pickup, showing that Toreno kept his word and had Sweet released in return for Carl doing what he asked of him.

When Carl picks Sweet up outside LSPD HQ, Sweet is livid to learn that Carl again abandoned the hood, his roots, and the Grove Street Families. Although Carl tries to convince Sweet that the Grove Street Families are gone and to put that behind him, Sweet refuses to just leave the hood behind, and unable to sway him, Carl agrees to retake the cul-de-sac and rebuild the GSF again. Once Ganton is reclaimed and the GSF have been reestablished, Sweet and Carl then deal with one of their former members in B Dup, confronting him at his new Balla house in Glen Park, where Big Bear, another GSF homie that had been put on drugs and made into B Dup's slave, finally stands up to B Dup and tells him off, rejoining the GSF, with Sweet taking Big Bear to rehab. Afterwards, they conquer more Balla territory in Idlewood, before joining all their friends, family, and allies at Madd Dogg's to learn that Tenpenny is finally going on trial for all his crimes. However, Tenpenny's lawyer announces that the District Attorney has dismissed the charges due to a lack of evidence, all part of what Carl had done for Tenpenny earlier to keep his corrupt acts a secret from Internal Affairs. Sweet and the others are furious, and they are not the only ones. Los Santos is also furious about Tenpenny's acquittal, and riots break out all over the city. Nevertheless, once Carl takes over enough of the territory owned by the Ballas and Vagos to put Grove Street in major control of Los Santos, he and Sweet finally locate the traitor Big Smoke's hiding place at his crack palace in East Los Santos. While Sweet stays in the car, Carl heads in personally to take vengeance on Big Smoke. However, after he kills Big Smoke, Tenpenny arrives to collect Smoke's money and escape Los Santos before the rioters can find him and kill him. When Tenpenny attempts to escape in a ladder apparatus firetruck, Sweet, refusing to let him escape justice, grabs on to the end of the ladder and hangs on as Carl chases down the firetruck and rescues Sweet before one of the new CRASH members Tenpenny recruited to his corrupt cause is able to force Sweet to lose his grip on the ladder and fall to the pavement. While Sweet takes over the driving, Carl fires at anything that gets in their way, be it rioters, cops, or whatever. Finally, Tenpenny loses control of the firetruck and crashes it right into the heart of Grove Street territory, the Ganton cul-de-sac. Stumbling out, having suffered mortal internal injuries from the crash, Tenpenny deliriously believes his actions kept Los Santos safe, before he finally collapses and dies from his wounds. Sweet arrives with Carl and Kendl, but as Carl prepares to make sure Tenpenny is dead with putting a Desert Eagle round in his head, Sweet talks him out of it, saying there's no need. Let the media believe that Tenpenny died in an auto accident rather than a gunshot wound that could be traced back to Grove Street. With Tenpenny's death, the riots finally end now that Tenpenny had been delivered justice for his crimes.

Some time later, as Cesar, Kendl, Sweet, and Carl are discussing their plans with how busy they are with Grove Street, the garage in San Fierro, the Four Dragons Casino in Las Venturas, and more, Madd Dogg enters with Kent Paul, Maccer, and Ken Rosenburg to reveal his new Gold Record he earned with Carl as his new manager. With things looking bright for the Johnson clan, Carl decides to head on out to hit the streets and see what's happening.

Background[]

Sweet was born to Beverly Johnson and an unnamed father in Los Santos. He was later present at the births of his three younger siblings, Carl, Kendl, and Brian. Sweet, some unknown time later, formed the Grove Street Families with Big Smoke and became the gang's leader, with Ryder and Carl joining the gang later as well. His youngest brother Brian died in an accident, which Sweet blamed on his other brother Carl; this resulted in Carl leaving for Liberty City. Sweet then moved out into his own house, next door to his childhood home.

Throughout the game, Sweet is seen to have two different girlfriends, one of which Carl saved. However, since Sweet shows little to no attention when Carl throws his girl out near the end of the game, it is implied that Sweet and her are not in a relationship and he only has one girlfriend.
