Hero Overview

This is exhilarating!
~ Senku's famous catchphrase

10 billion percent.
~ Senku's other famous catchphrase whenever he's sure of something.

It's a slow and steady effort. I'm going to beat fantasy with the power of science!
~ Senku Ishigami

Just look, Tsukasa. No matter if you kill me or anyone else, science will revive itself. With these hairless apes, even a crazy idiot who endlessly tests things can surely revive it again!
~ Senku's confidence that science will endure no matter what happens.

If it follows rules, then it is completely and utterly science. And if we're fighting with science... we wont lose.
~ Senku Ishigami

Nothing is impossible, Gen. No matter how far off the goal may seem, if you follow the steps, you'll get there 10 billion percent of the time. That's how science works.
~ Senku explaining how science works to Gen in S1 Episode 20

Senku Ishigami is the main protagonist of the anime and manga series Dr. Stone. He is a 16-year-old expert chemist and science prodigy who was among the billions of humans to have their lives changed forever by the Petrification Event, a worldwide phenomenon where a mysterious green light turned all human beings to stone.

In April 5738 AD, around 3,700 years since the Petrification, Senku suddenly awakes and breaks out of his stone casing, only to discover that all traces of human civilization have been lost to time. After reviving his close friend Taiju Oki and Taiju's love interest Yuzuriha Ogawa, Senku proclaims that he plans to rebuild society from scratch and revive every human on earth using the power of science.

He is voiced by Yusuke Kobayashi and Mikako Komatsu as a child in the Japanese Dub, and by Aaron Dismuke and Mikaela Krantz as a 1st child replaced Brittany Lauda as a 2nd child in the English Dub.

Appearance[]

Senku is a slender and not particularly strong young man of average height. He sports distinctive white (or light green in the anime) hair that stands up like a brush, featuring two locks that fall over his forehead, and sharp red eyes.

Before the petrification event, Senku typically wore a standard school uniform beneath a lab coat. However, after awakening in the Stone World, he switched to wearing primitive animal skin clothing. Once Yuzuriha was depetrified, she helped mend and improve his attire. Notably, Senku's shirt bears Albert Einstein's famous mass-energy equivalence formula, E=mc², written in his own blood, situated near his left shoulder. During a photoshoot with Minami for a hot air balloon launch event, Senku experimented with modern outfits crafted by Yuzuriha.

Following his revival in South America, Suika gave Senku a dark cloak to wear over his clothes as a symbol of their friendship. He retains the petrification scars on his body, which appear to have been weathered over time. Additionally, he conceals the village rope beneath his belt pouches. Upon being revived from petrification inside the rocket, Senku's petrification scars have healed, marking a significant change in his appearance.

In the sequel series, Sengupta is back to his modern slacks and lab coat look from before being petrified; with the addition of the cloak Suika gifted him.

Personality[]

Get excited!
~ Senku's signature catchphrase.

Senku possesses several distinctive traits that shape his character. He is known for his straightforward, confident, and highly logical nature, which sometimes comes across as arrogance. However, his self-assured demeanor doesn't cloud his judgment, as it's often supported by a deep and extensive understanding of science. Importantly, Senku never condescends to those with less knowledge; instead, he motivates and inspires others to improve themselves. His charisma and caring personality draw people to him, whether as supporters or allies. Occasionally, when Senku is excited about a new discovery or invention, he can display exaggerated emotions.

Despite his typical confidence and determination, Senku isn't immune to self-criticism when he misses important information. For instance, when Kohaku pointed out a misalignment of the north star, Senku realized he hadn't considered the earth's precession during his long petrification. Senku approaches problems with a highly logical mindset, believing that science can explain anything, even if it requires time and effort to comprehend complex concepts fully.

While Senku possesses a strong sense of justice, he sometimes bends the rules, withholds information, or manipulates others for the benefit of his allies. He may act as if he's using people for his own interests, but his true intention is to create inventions and innovations for the betterment of society. This selfless and kind-hearted aspect of his character becomes evident when he mourns the death of his adoptive father and when he refuses to abandon his friends, even in the face of danger.

Senku appears largely apathetic toward romance, dismissing the idea of love as illogical. He discourages romantic feelings toward himself, as seen with Kohaku and Nikki. However, he supports the romantic relationships of his friends, such as Taiju and Yuzuriha or Chrome and Ruri. Senku's physical abilities may be limited, but he compensates with unwavering determination and persistence. He meticulously counted the time during his petrification, endured potential death at Tsukasa's hands without flinching, and displayed quick thinking to defeat Ibara with Ryusui's assistance. Senku embodies the spirit of never giving up, regardless of the challenges he faces.

In the sequel series, Senku shows some hint of being capable of romantic love; having said he's not a monster who would take advantage of a girl.
