Sentinel Minor, later known as Sentinel Magnus, is a major character in the 2007 animated TV series, Transformers: Animated series.

He is the former best friend of Optimus Prime who upon a fatal decision by Sentinel resulted in the loss of his close friend and implied girlfriend, Elita-1, to which Sentinel acts nothing more than a petty bully towards Optimus for being expelled even though the only reason he did so to cover up Sentinel.

He was voiced by Townsend Coleman, Peter Reinhardt in the German version, Junichi Suwabe in the Japanese version

Powers and abilities[]

He usually transforms into a Cybertronic bulldozer, but temporarily adopted the form of a snow plow truck for his stay on Earth. He later returned to his original form after leaving the planet. He possesses an energy lance and an arm-mounted shield which can be expanded into a force-field, as well as tossed about as a weapon. Basically, he'd be a knight in shining armor — if he had a better personality.

Personality[]

Sentinel is an arrogant Autobot, he calls himself "the successor of the title Magnus", he has airs of superiority and whenever there is a mission, he goes without hesitation to prove that he is superior to the other Autobots, he is also envious, especially with Optimus who has been suspicious of him since the incident, he often argues with him and claims to be better than Optimus when he is quite the opposite.

Sentinel also has a bad temper with others, especially when they mention his big chin, he gets angry easily when something goes wrong and when Optimus gets recognition. Finally, Sentinel has a great hatred towards Humans due to what happened with Elita, calling them "organic" and being afraid of having a virus and being infected by a Human.

However, despite his arrogant exterior, there resides a spark of goodness in him. He really does care for his friends and on extremely rare occasions, does show a small degree of respect for Optimus. But in most cases, Sentinel has a lot of trouble showing his concern for his friends and his begrudging respect for Optimus.

History[]

Background[]

Sentinel was named and trained in Autobot boot camp by the drill sergeant Kup which is also where he met Optimus and Elita-1. Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II During their studies, Elita and Sentinel observed Optimus battle Megatron in a virtual training program. Sentinel sneered when Optimus ultimately failed, but Ultra Magnus noted that Optimus had scored better than any Autobot thus far.

On a mission assigned by Mega Magnus, the team had to explore an organic planet but only in the outer places, they were not to enter any further. But Optimus disobeyed the order and wanted to go further, but what they did not know is that this planet was inhabited by giant spiders.

When the 3 of them fought, Sentinel lost consciousness for a moment and Optimus and Elita were left inside the cave, both climbed up to escape but Elita slipped and Optimus could not catch her, when he came out there was no trace of Elita, when Sentinel wakes up he realizes that she is no longer there. He believes that Optimus gave up and did not look for Elita, believing that she could not be saved. From that moment on, Sentinel hated Optimus for abandoning Elita. Optimus knows that he hates him, but he doesn't give it the slightest importance. Despite Sentinel's arrogance, he has been saved many times by Optimus in some situations, but he is so proud that he doesn't thank him, but deep down he is still his best friend, even if he doesn't accept it. And that's why he has a special contempt for everything organic and filling Jazz's head with how dangerous organics are.

Transformers: Animated[]

Sentinel Prime immediately began putting out propaganda warning Autobots that anyone they knew could be a Decepticon spy, began shutting down facilities like Maccadam's Old Oil House as a security measure, and started viewing any challenge to him as treason. When the Decepticon-occupied Omega Supreme appeared in the skies above Cybertron, Sentinel immediately advocated firing on it, ignoring a displaced Ratchet's warnings that Omega was so transwarp-saturated that this would take out the planet.

Ratchet's opposition led to Sentinel having him hunted down for treason. Jerkier still, Sentinel prepared to fire on Omega while the Council were still discussing the matter, and he lied to them about his intentions. Luckily, when he did have the Elite Guard's Fortress Maximus fire on the titan, the Decepticons transwarped away. Sentinel brushed off the Council's ire and tried to take Ultra Magnus' salvaged hammer from Ratchet, attempting to pursue and arrest the medic when Ratchet simply took the hammer with him back to Earth. Jazz volunteered to go instead, taking the opportunity to get out from under Sentinel's command. This Is Why I Hate Machines

Soon, Sentinel would have to swallow his pride when Optimus Prime returned to Cybertron with his crew, with captured Megatron, Shockwave, and Lugnut, and with three reclaimed stasis pods—in Omega Supreme, no less! He stood glowering as the cheering throngs unwashed masses surrounded his rival.

After Swindle was fired, Rook—searching for someone "earnest" and "straightforward"—hired Sentinel Minor as the third ad hoc replacement for the missing Vector Prime.

As a columnist, Sentinel spent most of his time lecturing his readers about the values of Autobot boot camp and what he'd do if he became Magnus. He walked out the minute he learned he was communicating with organics.

Trivia[]

  • Marty Isenberg's love of M*A*S*H was the reason Sentinel Prime is a jerk; he believed that the Transformers universe "needed a Major Frank Burns". Conceived as "Rodimus Prime", Hasbro did not like the idea of Rodimus being a jerk, so the character was shifted to being "Sentinel Prime".
  • Sentinel Prime is voiced by Townsend Coleman, who provided the voice of the Tick in his 1990s animated series. After he was cast, Sentinel Prime was designed to homage the Tick with his blue coloration and pronounced chin (even by normal Animated standards!). The writers ran further with it, having him utter silly, Tick-esque lines like "Energon-y goodness!"
  • At the time "Transform and Roll Out" went into production, the only part of Sentinel Prime that had been fully designed was his head. However, this turned out to be a non-final design; in his subsequent appearances, Sentinel's head is shorter and squatter, with a more bulbous chin and dark grey instead of white. He also has a set of extra smoke stacks/antennae on his shoulders, which would vanish during his first full-body appearance.
  • In the planned season 4 of Animated, Sentinel would try to secure his position as Sentinel Magnus after Megatron's escape from prison and the death of Ultra Magnus, first by commissioning a Powermaster upgrade for himself from the Project Omega team, then by invading Earth with the intent of using the collected AllSpark fragments to defeat Megatron. Optimus would steal Sentinel's Powermaster upgrade and travel to Earth to stop Sentinel from making a huge mistake. Had the "Powermaster Optimus Prime" toy been completed, designers vaguely planned, if at all possible, for it to also be compatible with the Sentinel Prime toy.
  • Sentinel Prime's animation model and toy served as raw material for informal mockups of how Ironhide's Earth form would look in Season 4. Ironhide's actual appearance and toy, would they have been completed, would have resulted in an entirely new look and action figure.
