Argenta legends speak of Sentinel beasts, loyal creatures that lived as companions of the hardened warriors. Often larger, swifter and stronger than others of their kind, these animals shared instincts with their masters and aided them in battle. The Night Sentinels never shared publicly the origin of these creatures, for only they stood worthy of them.
~ Codex entry

Sentinel Wolves are minor supporting characters in Doom Eternal and its DLCs. They are species of wolf-like animals from Argent D'Nur, who served the Night Sentinels in the war against Hell. In-game, they manifest as ghosts long after death, where they guide the Slayer through Argent D'Nur, still loyal to him after eons. However, some ghostly Sentinel Wolves were corrupted by the Marauders, and are enemies in-game. Only the corrupted Sentinel Wolves actually fight in-game, the rest merely lead the player around and activate certain events. Externally, the ghosts of Sentinel Wolves strongly resemble Earth wolves, but with no or very flat fur, and are transparent green in color, with corrupted Sentinel Wolves being orange.

History[]

Origin[]

The origin of the wolves is unknown, as the Night Sentinels never publicly shared their origin, making it ambiguous if they were created by the Wraithcall of the Elemental Wraiths. Like Wintherins, they were tamed by the Argenta and assigned to hardened Night Sentinels as companions and war beasts, bred as warriors in their own right.

War against Hell[]

The Argenta served a race of extradimensional beings known as Maykrs, who acted as their "gods" in the war against the demons of Hell, and the wolves were the loyal companions of the Sentinels throughout the war. However, the Maykrs eventually betrayed the Argenta in exchange for immortality-granting Argent Energy, allowing the demons to conquer Argent D'Nur and partially absorb it into Hell. Before the fall of Argent D'Nur, there was a civil war between Sentinels loyal to the Doom Slayer, an unnamed human who had risen to the heir to the Argenta throne, and the Sentinels loyal to the Maykrs. Wolves appear to have also been split in the conflict, and were possibly exterminated during the war. The Sentinels who were loyal to the Maykrs fell, and were resurrected as demons known as Marauders. Marauders kept their wolves, who were also resurrected as spectral manifestations, but demonic in nature. A few wolves still loyal to the true Sentinels were also able to manifest themselves as spirits after the fall of Argent D'Nur, with the race of Sentinel Wolves appearing to be extinct.

DOOM Eternal[]

Eons later, the Doom Slayer returned to Argent D'Nur, where a Sentinel wolf loyally awaited him, and guided him to the chamber of King Novik's ghost. When the Slayer went to rescue Samuel Hayden, the human form of a Maykr Seraph who had granted the Doom Slayer incredible power, from the ARC Complex on Earth as it was assaulted by demons, a Marauder appeared to attack the Slayer, with his own spectral wolf, but both the wolf and Marauder fell before the Slayer. More Marauders attacked the Slayer at certain points in his journey to destroy the Hell Priests commanding the demonic invasion of Earth, utilizing their wolves, but were all killed by the Slayer.

DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part 1[]

When the Slayer retrieved the Dark Lord Davoth's life sphere to revive and kill him, a Sentinel Wolf manifested to his aid. The wolf guided the Slayer through the hostile environment of Argent D'Nur, even forming a shield around him at certain points to protect the Slayer from toxins, just before hordes of demons attacked him.

DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part 2[]

After reviving Davoth, the Slayer ventured to the Hell city of Immora to kill him for good, guided in Argent D'Nur by a Sentinel Wolf as he sought a power source for the portal to Immora. In Immora, Davoth summoned corrupted spectral wolves to his aid as he battled against the Slayer, but the wolves were destroyed, as was Davoth. The true final fate of the wolves remains unknown, but like Novik and the Night Sentinel ghosts in Hell, it is possible the spirits of the wolves finally passed on.
