Heroine Overview

Shōko Nishimiya is the deuteragonist of the manga series and its 2016 anime movie adaptation A Silent Voice.

She is voiced by Saori Hayami in Japanese and by Lexi Marman-Cowden in English.

Personality[]

Given her reliance on visual stimuli, Shōko naturally gravitates toward visual metaphor and symbolism. This inclination is evident in her sentimental attachment to her sixth-grade notebook, her appreciation for Madagascar periwinkles conveyed through the language of flowers, and numerous other symbolic actions woven throughout the narrative. Fundamentally, Shōko embodies kindness and compassion, characterized by her easygoing nature. She displays remarkable patience and forgiveness, extending her understanding even to her former bully, Shōya. Years later, when he sincerely expresses regret for mistreating and failing to comprehend her, Shōko warmly accepts his friendship. A younger Shōko harbored a profound longing to get along with those she came across. Unfortunately, her struggles with communication frequently led to experiences of misunderstanding, disinterest, and bullying.

Her journey of personal development reaches its pinnacle with the decision to relocate to Tokyo upon graduation. Finally, she eagerly anticipates pursuing her own dream of becoming a hairdresser. This aspiration was partially sparked by a childhood encounter with Miyako Ishida (Shōya's mother) at her salon.

In the opposite of common expectations, she possesses a keen analytical and perceptive nature. Swiftly discerning the content and subtext of conversations, she doesn't solely rely on signed communication. Nevertheless, she grapples with confidence in her own assessments of social situations, leading her to highly value others' honesty, even when it is delivered with bluntness. This quality is evident in her sixth-grade desire to be friends with the tactless yet honest Shōya and plays a role in her association with Naoka Ueno in adulthood.
