“ | We are Shadow Garden. We lurk in the shadows. We hunt the shadows. | „ |
~ The slogan of the organization. |
Shadow Garden are the main protagonists of the dark fantasy action light novel, manga, web novel, and anime series The Eminence in Shadow. It is a mysterious hidden organization founded by Shadow, whose true identity belongs to a generic teenage boy, Cid Kagenou. Their primary goal is to eliminate the Cult of Diablos and prevent them from resurrecting the demon Diablos.
They are the archenemy faction of the Cult of Diablos. As a relatively unknown organization, they became a threat to other nations and even the Cult of Diablos came to fear them. In return, the Cult uses their connections in the public to incrimate and blame Shadow Garden for their own evil.
History[]
Origins of Shadow Garden can be traced back to a young boy's childhood: Cid Kagenou. Determined to fulfill his dream of becoming the "eminence in shadow" and to accomplish this, Cid had repeatedly sneaked out of his house to battle against robbers nearby. During one night on his outings he discovered a rotting but alive body, heavily mutated by Demon Possesion. Originally intending to relieve it of its suffering, Cid had noticed it possessed a lot of magical potential.
He conducted several tests on the body and unintentionally returned the girl to her original state. He made up a tale and persuaded the elf girl that she was a descendant of one of the Three Heroes who vanquished the demon Diablos, the one who had cursed her family with Demon Possession. He reasoned that she may be helpful to his cause. He stated that the Cult of Diablos had been preparing to raise Diablos from the dead and worshipped the legendary monster. The girl grew furious and vowed allegiance to her new lord, who had renamed her Alpha. Unbeknownst to him, Cid's fiction turned out to be accurate in every way; everyone else in Shadow Garden is aware of this, but he thinks it's just roleplay.
Together, Cid and Alpha founded the organization Shadow Garden, and over time, they acquired six additional girls who had Alpha's condition and were similarly treated. Under their captain, they spent their time learning and practicing swordsmanship, economics, the arts, and literature. In addition, Cid's tales from his past life motivated them to employ those ideas to further their influence, forging public personas that won fame and notoriety by capitalizing on the information he bestowed upon them.
Chronology[]
After Shadow and Alpha founded Shadow Garden, they trained and resurrected victims of the possessed. While searching for the possessed, the two had destoryed a branch of the cult, bases, and several cult members, including members of the Knights of Rounds of the Cult of Diablos over three years. Shadow and Alpha had founded 6 girls, that they rescued and brought them into Shadow Garden who would be named Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, and Eta. Shadow had trained them in swordmanship and taught them the knowledge called "wisdom of the Shadows" that came from his previous life.
Three years after Cid and Alpha met, Shadow Graden had immediately mobilized when Shadow's elder sister, Claire was abducted by Viscount Grease and launched a full assault. With Cid's serendipitous help, they managed to find the hideout, and attacked the hideout during the nighttime, killing all the guards and aiming to capture Grease. With the intention of extracting information about the Order of Diablos. Grease had manage to escape from them, but didn't get far as Shadow had intercepted him and after a one-sided fight, Shadow killed him. Claire was resuced and Shadow Garden returned home.
Afterward, the Seven Shadows confronted their master and claimed that in order to keep up with the Cult's movements and would be best for them to spilt up and expand their infulence. Not knowing that the cult actually exissted, Shadow had assumed that the others had grown tired of their "role-playing" and wanted to live their own lives, which he allowed. As such each of the Seven Shadows went out into the world and had began establishing their public personas, allowing access with various avenues of society and gain new privileges to hunt for the Cult.
When Shadow brought the first seven seven together, they lived in a small house that was made from the recreation of the construction of the knowledge from Cid's past life. This was home while they hid and served Shadow in his youth, and it was situated in small abandoned town with no traffice, safe from the occasional bandits and smugglers. They eventually refurbished the town into their secret base to conduct operations.
In Search of a New Base[]
Shadow Garden had used the abandoned town as their base for years, but it did not last forever, as the Cult had sent their forces to investigate the missing carriages carrying the possessed that never arrived and this led to the town being discovered. After ambusing the intruders Alpha and the others leading them to abandom the town.
Zeta was tasked to find a new base of operation and had succedded by finding an acient city that was abandoned long ago, Alexandira located in the east of the Sacred Land Lindwurm, beyond the Abyss Woods. The Seven Shadows, except for Eta, entered the ancient city while the rest of Shadow Garden stayed behind to report back to Shadow in case they did not return. Inside the city, they encountered the Mist Dragon and were nearly killed until Shadow appeared and subdued the beast. Impressed by Shadow's strength, the dragon formed a pact with him and allowed Shadow Garden to use Alexandria as their new base.
After relocating to Alexandria, Shadow Garden carried out follow-up actions such as improving urban functions, training members, securing logistics, and build their war chest.
Princess Alexia Midgar's Kidnapping[]
At Midgar Royal Spellsword Academy, Cid was framed for kidnapping of Princess Alexia Midgar, Shadow Garden activates to help him in finder her and discover the acts was a plot by the cult. Their goals being aduct the princess, take her blood for experimentation and frame Cid as the culprit to make him the scapegoat before executing him. Shadow Garden had mobilzed uncovering and destroying their enemies' hideouts from the Fenrir's Sect in the kingdom's capital. Alpha defeated a rampaging monster and encountered Iris Midgar, while Shadow rescued princess Alexia and killed the culprit Zenon Griffey, the swordmanship instructor at the Academy and a high ranking member from Fenrir's Sect by obliterating him and the location by using his ultimate technquie, "I Am Atomic". After this, the world had learned about the existence of Shadow Garden and the Order of Diablos.
Shadow Garden began investigating a series of murders targeting citizens by individuals posing as Shadow Garden. According to Shadow himself, if any fools (like the fake Shadow Garden (who are actually members of the Cult of Diablos) used the name Shadow Garden, they'll pay the price with their own life. As it demonstrated that all the fakes were killed by the real Shadow Garden.
Shadow Garden shows not regard if they were persecuted or not because they don't fight for righteousness or evil, as they only fight is to completely annihilate their true and only enemies (the Cult of Diablos) but nothing else. They have no interest of killing those who are not a part of the Cult of Diablos (such as the dimwitted-yet-delusional Iris Midgar, Beatrix, Alexia Midgar or Claire Kagenou (who is the sister of Shadow)) because they don't see them as serious threats. They have no intentions of killing innocent people because they're harmless. They intent to cure any female subjects who were experimented by the Cult just to recruit them for their vengeance upon the Cult of Diablos.
After killing Mordred (the 9th seat of Cult of Diablos' Knights of Rounds), Shadow and Beta were transported to Earth, Japan. They killed a mad scientist who is using Mordred's head as experiments. Shadow and Beta returned back to their world not before Beta took Akane Nishino with her.
After Perv Asshat and Mordred's deaths, Rose Oriana (666) became queen of Oriana Kingdom to remain her allegiance with Shadow Garden. But the cult had managed to minimize Shadow Garden's gains by creating a faux story that the new queen, using her pervious act to patrcidion and blaming her for summoning the "Black Rose". With the international defamation resulted in Oriana becoming a heretic state, losing all allies and trade capital. Knowing that other nations will eventually rally against them, Shadow Garden was not deterred and continued supporting the kingdom from the shadows whilst trying to expose the cult.
Shadow Garden has noticed that the cult was running out of the Tears of Diablos. The cult's responce Fenrir Sect began kidnapping students at the Midgar Academy, with the intent on awakening and recovering the right arm of Diablos that was sealed underneath the school to obtain more Tears. In response, Zeta led her secret branch to stop the cult and rescue the students. In the end, the Fenrir sect was defeated after the Shadow and Zeta's group killed several key members, including Fenrir himself, and the students were saved.
However unbeknownst to Shadow Garden, Zeta and her secret branch began her own objective to make Shadow immortal using the Tears, allowing him to rule the world from the shadows and prevent the cult from ever rising again after they were defeated. They recovered Diablos' right arm rather destroying it they forcibly absorbed it into Claire Kagenou after confirming that she was the host of Diablos.
Headquarters[]
Alexandria[]
Lawless City[]
As the current the sole ruler of the Lawless City with the death of Crimson and Juggernaut, and the resignment of Elizabeth, Yukime is allied with Shadow Garden, given Shadow Garden a somewhat connection to the Lawless City.
Mitsugoshi Company[]
Managed by Gamma, under the name of Luna, the director. Mitsugoshi Company's operating system originated from Cid's comprehension over marketing and business from his past life on Earth. The Seven Shadows took advantage of his knowledge to establish the company. They replicated contemporary goods, engaging in trade until amassing considerable wealth. Their distinct merchandise, hailed for its innovative nature, quickly garnered widespread appeal, establishing their brand as a trendsetter adored by many. To expedite financial transactions, they issued banknotes as a widely accepted currency among the populace, later establishing their own banking ins
titution. Additionally, Mitsugoshi actively promotes its diverse array of business ventures, favored by patrons, and offers a variety forms of attraction for customers, further enhancing their fame in society.
Membership[]
Shadow Garden was initially founded with only seven members, all of whom were trained directly by Shadow, the organization's founder. In just three years, they managed to take down the strongest members of the Cult, dismantle several key facilities, and defeat several of the oldest and most powerful members of the 'Knights of Rounds' along with their candidates.
After the Seven Shadows decided to leave their master to expand the organization, Shadow Garden grew in power. Their hidden headquarters, Alexandria, is protected by the Mist Dragon, making it appear as a natural fortress. The Mitsugoshi Company serves as a crucial fundraising base, creating innovative products based on 'Shadow Wisdom' to finance and manage their missions. In just two years, the organization's membership has grown to over 600 members and continues to increase.
Despite being a relatively new organization, Shadow Garden's members have demonstrated far greater power and skill compared to the Cult of Diablos and other national forces. This superiority stems from the fact that all Shadow Garden members are young women who were cured of Demon Possession, which significantly enhanced their magical abilities, further augmenting their strength. Additionally, they received exceptional training from Shadow and, later, from the Seven Shadows for newer recruits.
Shadow Garden is sovereignly led by Shadow as the founder and Alpha as the second-in-command, overseeing all operations and activities within the organization. Alpha has direct authority over nearly everyone in the organization and leads the Seven Shadows, who serve as Shadow's personal bodyguards. The Seven Shadows wield immense authority and command over the organization, each overseeing a specific field with their invincible supernatural powers. Beneath them are the Numbers, the highest-ranking members, who serve as their direct subordinates due to their exemplary combat prowess and talents. The Numbers are divided into divisions, each specializing in a certain aspect of missions based on their unique skills.
Cid holds absolute authority as the ruler and leader of Shadow Garden, giving him complete control over the organization and all its subsidiaries and affiliates. This allows him to make decisions that override any other member's commands. Despite believing that Shadow Garden consists solely of the Seven Shadows pursuing their own dreams, Cid is unaware of the organization's true extent. It has evolved into a vast global entity, shaped by chance or circumstance.
While Alpha effectively leads the organization, Cid has the power to issue directives that all members must follow without question, overriding any other orders. A notable instance is when Cid whimsically ordered Delta to hunt Juggernaut, nullifying Alpha's current mission during the Major Corporate Alliance conflict. When Alpha discovers Cid's betrayal and his intent to destroy the Mitsugoshi Company and Shadow Garden, she chooses to respect his wishes. Determined to fulfill his desires, she and the other members of Shadow Garden are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure its downfall.
Seven Shadows[]
The Seven Shadows are the first seven original members recruited and empowered directly by Shadow, who treated their demonic possession symptoms. These girls have become Shadow's most loyal confidants and the highest-ranking executives within Shadow Garden. Over three years, they trained extensively with Shadow, learning all his martial arts and magic techniques, making them his childhood friends and disciples. The Seven Shadows' extensive combat training and the invaluable knowledge imparted by Shadow have cemented their positions in the organizational hierarchy, making their roles as the leading higher-ups unshakable.
As Shadow's earliest subordinates, the Seven Shadows stand in a league of their own within Shadow Garden, possessing exceptional power and skills. This distinction comes partly from Shadow, who bestowed upon them a portion of his own magical energy, and partly from his direct teachings in swordsmanship, martial arts, warfare, and other disciplines crucial to the covert organization. Each member has mastered their respective fields, whether in combat, espionage, science, or economics.
The Seven Shadows are considered Shadow Garden's elite members, dedicated to protecting Shadow or accompanying him in battle. Their abilities are exceptionally powerful and formidable, honed through rigorous training under Shadow's tutelage. Due to their extraordinary prowess, the Seven Shadows possess an incredibly frightening strength that sets them apart from regular members, making them the foundational pillars of the organization. With the exception of Delta, possibly due to her nature, they hold the highest authority in governing Shadow Garden, second only to Shadow himself.
Interestingly, the Seven Shadows possess stupendous capabilities, their power far exceeding that of all other members. Each has unique talents and fighting styles, outperforming the strongest knights and warriors across all countries, including the Cult's most powerful members, such as the Named Children. In fact, the overall strength and skills of the Seven Shadows have already surpassed those of the Knights of Rounds members revealed thus far. Their combat abilities are unmatched and incomparable, especially against members of the Rounds like Nelson and Mordred. Even in the Cult's special facility, Sanctuary, where magic is absorbed, they can still fight effectively.
With their immense and remarkable strength, the Seven Shadows are a formidable force that strikes fear into everyone around the world. Their extraordinary abilities greatly overshadow any opponents they face. Rose Oriana estimated the overwhelming amount of magic emanating from Alpha, the leader of the Seven Shadows and Shadow's right-hand woman, which alone caused her spine to shiver. She noted that the Seven Shadows' enormous natural power could be catastrophic, potentially causing massive losses to a nation. A nation would have to expend considerable resources just to subdue a single member of the Seven Shadows.
Due to their significant prowess and tremendous magical energy, the Seven Shadows' capabilities are impressively outstanding, and their astonishing reputation is widely feared across the globe. Even the Cult of Diablos is extremely fearful of their immense power. Alexia Midgar noted that each member possesses strength equal to or greater than Iris Midgar, the strongest warrior in the world. Aurora, known as the strongest witch of her time, was visibly nervous upon meeting Zeta for the first time, shocked by her formidable presence. This prompted Aurora to warn Claire Kagenou to be cautious and vigilant when approaching Zeta.
Despite their immense power, the ranking of the Seven Shadows is based on the order in which they joined Shadow Garden, making their titles permanent regardless of their individual levels of physical strength and skill. Currently, there are only two members outside the Seven Shadows who have received the honor of being granted power directly from Shadow himself: Victoria and Rose Oriana, considered the highest honor within the organization.
According to Epsilon, there are plans to create a second 'Seven Shadows' with powers comparable to the original members. So far, Victoria is the only known candidate. While Rose has qualified by receiving her power directly from Shadow, she is publicly the new Queen of the Oriana Kingdom, which presents a conflict of responsibilities and excludes her from consideration.
Numbers[]
The Numbers are a class tier consists of members who were originally girls recovered from Demon Possession symptoms, having discarded their former identities. Each member is assigned a number based on the order of their recruitment. The Seven Shadows recruited nearly 600 people before Cid enrolled in Midgar Academy, with most of the recruitment occurring within the first month of his enrollment. Due to their training within the organization, all members have demonstrated great prowess, talent, ingenuity, and other skills, resulting in the acquisition or even enhancement of their incredible abilities.
Among the Numbers, there are several prominent members who hold exclusive commanding positions and are immediate subordinates to the Seven Shadows. These members occupy the organization's upper echelon as field commanders and include the finest Numbers from 8 to 24, each receiving a Greek letter as a name in recognition of their commendable efforts. If any Numbers members exhibit abilities and strength nearly on par with their superiors, their potential for advancement is recognized by the Seven Shadows. This recognition can lead to earning their respective Named ranks as high incumbents within Shadow Garden.
With this honorary privilege from their esteemed positions, the Seven Shadows can specifically choose any available 'Numbers' as their confidants and supporting advisors. They select from the most prestigious and strongest Numbers members, such as Gamma with Nu or Epsilon with Chi and Omega. Numbers members are carefully chosen based on their rare unique skills, advanced expertise, and notable contributions to Shadow Garden, deemed worthy of their numbered designation by the Seven Shadows according to their abilities. Despite their high standing, all members unequivocally answer to Shadow and Alpha. In the anime, the Numbers members wear gold-decorated uniforms manifested from their slime suits, including jackets, scarves, hats, and eye patches.
Currently, the Numbers members consist of over 600 agents, possibly divided into different roles based on their strengths and focused capabilities, such as soldiers, squad leaders, researchers, spies, scientists, and other necessary roles for missions. Under Lambda's vigorous and intensive training in magic and swordsmanship from a young age, each Numbers member's strength approximately matches the first-rate dark knight standard for Spellswords. Many Numbers members also work as staff for the Mitsugoshi Company, allowing them to maintain civilian personas while operating as an independent espionage unit.
Numbers refer to themselves strictly by the order in which they joined, rather than by a ranking system like recruit or lieutenant. While Shadow Garden members are assigned numbers as their new identities, these numbers indicate the order of joining rather than power. However, members within each set of 100 are generally stronger than those in the subsequent set, making the numbers a rough measure of strength. They also have their own chain of command and possess authority to give orders to other members. For example, No. 100 has seniority and higher authority than No. 200, and lower-ranked members are identified strictly by their numbers, not by names.
Every member with a double or triple-digit 'number name' holds this title from the time they originally joined the organization, based on their numerical enlistment. They have the opportunity to climb the ranks by meeting specific criteria, which involves challenging older members regardless of the numerical gap. If a newer member successfully challenges an older member, they earn the right to challenge a higher-ranking 'Numbers' member. Should they succeed, the Seven Shadows may recognize their potential and assign them a number name reflective of their level.
This was the case with Nu, who joined when Cid began his first year at Midgar Academy and quickly rose to Named Number status. It is unclear if the 'Nu' name was vacant or if she supplanted a previous holder. Similarly, No. 559 challenged No. 89 for the right to challenge the Numbers, unexpectedly winning despite the gap of over four hundred places. Her victory was possible partly because she received power from her savior, Shadow.
After graduating from basic training, Numbers members are allowed to personalize the appearance of their slime bodysuits, provided they remain predominantly black with gold livery and purple decorative accessories. However, the designs must be conservative to avoid being mistaken for a ranked agent.
Zeta's Branch Division[]
These branch divisions were secretly founded by Zeta, one of the Seven Shadows, with the shared goal of destroying the Cult of Diablos. However, this division works solely for Zeta, serving a further goal: taking over the world and installing Shadow as its god after he attains immortality by reviving the Demon Diablos through Claire Kagenou, who has become Aurora's vessel. Due to the extreme nature of this faction, they operate covertly without the main leadership's knowledge to avoid suspicion.
The rogue faction operates independently of Shadow Garden and consists of Numbers members selectively handpicked by Zeta. Although they run their clandestine operations unofficially, they are allowed to act on behalf of Shadow Garden in a way that legitimizes their actions. They discreetly continue their covert activities, using assigned tasks as a cover while collaborating on their actual mission to achieve the faction's primary objective without arousing suspicion from their superiors.
In addition to Numbers members, Zeta has recruited outsiders unaffiliated with Shadow Garden to work beyond the organization's boundaries. Unlike Numbers members, these recruits can move freely and act independently, taking on unauthorized high-risk missions that would otherwise require prior clearance from higher-ups.

Equipment and Artifacts[]
By the thanks to the initial inventions of Shadow, the 7 shadows were not only able to produce better maps and tracking systems, but also a variety of equipment, clothes, and other items that were rebuilt from the ideals and memories of their Lord, Shadow. In addition to further assist them in their reporting and data collection on worship, among other things:
- Slime Suit: A ground-breaking piece of clothing developed by Cid Kagenou/Shadow that has virtually endless applications. Since the creation of the Shadow Garden, Cid and the Seven Shadows have improved the suit, and now everyone uses it, including the Seven Shadows and all Numbers subordinates.
- Slime weapons: The bodysuit's shape-shifting capabilities were enhanced and hardened into melee, ranged, and close-quarters weapons. As limited as the mass of the slime bodysuit, these weapons.
- Locator of Possess: An Eta-made artifact that enables Shadow Garden to find the possessed girls wherever in the world.
- Homing Pigeons: Pigeons that have been taught to convey messages to recipients anywhere in the world are a popular way of communication worldwide.
- The Rolapoid: An artifact made by Eta, based on Cid's "Shadow Wisdom," which is a self-developing instant camera that has been reverse engineered.
Trivia[]
- Members of Shadow Garden mostly comprise of females, with Cid being the only male of Shadow Garden.
- Only 9 people, of more than 600 members in the Shadow Garden, have received their power directly from Cid, these being the original 7 Shadows, victoria, and Rose Oriana.
- The directives issued by Cid are seen as being absolute, thus even if they conflict with those from the Seven Shadows, they take precedence.
- Within terms of power, Alpha is the most powerful member behind Cid and above Delta.
- Zeta is stronger than Delta due to her magic control while Delta is more of a berserker, while Beta and Epsilon are tied for fifth place.
- Gamma and Eta are the weakest members of the Seven Shadows due to Eta's sleep disorder and Gamma's discoordination, but Eta is better in combat and is "ahead" of Gamma. However, the ammount of magic that they possess is so great that their strength is enormous that even their clumsy movement is able to kill elite soldiers.
- The Seven Shadows are fiercely antagonistic against anyone who attempts to harm or endanger Cid, to the point that they will kill that person or entity without hesitation with the exception of Claire Kagenou, this is because they consider it the same as a simple fight between brothers and they know that their master really cares about their sister.
- The Numbers, with a few notable exceptions, are exactly what their name implies; each is assigned and called by their number as a new name. The top twenty-four members, known as "Named Numbers," are given Greek letter names and are regarded as commanding officers.
- Even if the directives of the seven Shadows are in conflict with those of Cid, they take precedence since they are seen as absolute. such as Cid sending Delta to battle Juggernaut while posing as "John Smith" in order to carry on his covert undercover duties.
- Only the other highest ranking Named Number members, notably the other six Shadows, can deal with Delta directly because she often bites all Shadow Garden members who are lesser than her in an effort to demonstrate her authority inside Beastkin.
- Even if the directives of the seven Shadows are in conflict with those of Cid, they take precedence since they are seen as absolute. such as Cid sending Delta to battle Juggernaut while posing as "John Smith" in order to carry on his covert undercover duties.
- Aside from Cid, only Alpha and Epsilon can cure people who have the Demon Possession curse.
- Several people in Shadow Garden were angry with Alexia because of her "sentimental relationship" with Cid. The most hostile person to her in her public role as Natsume Kafka was Beta.
- Beta became enraged and envious when she learned that Cid and Alexia were dating. Alpha, on the other hand, did not place much weight on this fact because she was aware that it was merely a ruse.
- According to the light novel, the web novel, and the manga, until now, all of the members, including Shadow, have worn masks to conceal their identities, though on a few occasions they have done so when they choose to, in front of their adversaries or friends. However, none of the Shadow Garden members wear the mask in the anime; instead, they all wear a black hooded cloak, which causes a little uproar among the work's followers. Since the premise is that neither the enemy nor the general public should be aware of their hidden identities.
- Each voice actresses of the Seven Shadows have sang their own cover for the anime Season 1's first ending song "Darling of the Night".[1]
- For "Polaris of the Night", the anime Season 2's ending song, Gamma is the only of the Seven Shadow to have her voice actress sing the ending song along with the three voice actresses of the Named Numbers: Lambda, Kai, and Omega.[2]
