Shao is a minor character in Mortal Kombat 1, being a heroic counterpart of perennial villain Shao Kahn, and is a playable character in the game's final chapter.
Shao is voiced by Ike Amadi, who also voices hiscounterparts in the same game.
This alternative version of Shao never went down the same path of villainy as his counterparts, although he retains similar ruthless traits.
In Mortal Kombat 1's final chapter Armageddon, Shao is seen as a member of the Union of Light, and is playable as a potential Final Warrior. Shao fights his way to the top of the Pyramid, and helps Fire God Liu Kang to stop Titan Shang Tsung's Order of Darkness. At the Pyramid's summit, Shao battles and defeats the Titan Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, and Liu Kang sends him back to his respective timeline as the Pyramid begins collapsing.

This General Shao might represents if Shao had never been provoked or fallen into darkness.
In a General Shao mirror match, the other Shao comments "The greatest victories require no battle", a more honourable statement than usual from Shao Kahn, to which the General disregards, implying a heroic Shao is his opponent.
