Shard the Metal Sonic is a supporting character in the Archie comics and spin-offs Sonic the Hedgehog.
He was the first Metal Sonic ever created and was one of the deadliest robotic models created by Dr. Ivo Robotnik, based off his organic counterpart and Robotnik's most hated enemy, Sonic the Hedgehog, and was one of the first robots in the Metal Sonic Series. Metal Sonic was pitted against Sonic and friends on numerous occasions, until he was seemingly destroyed when he chose to sacrifice himself to save Sonic and Tails. He was at some later point recovered, rebuilt, and - having gained a social conscience and sense of morality - recruited as a member of the Secret Freedom Fighters.
Personality[]
Initially, Shard seemed emotionless, unhesitatingly obeying Robotnik's orders and expressing contempt for his enemies. However, after he was defeated by Knuckles and the Chaotix, he had to rebuild himself and so his personality changed a lot drastically, as well as his abilities and his appearance. He started feeling emotions; shown when he battled Sonic, mocking and insulting his organic counterpart, and shortly before his apparent death, he revealed that he could overcome his programming and act as a complete individual. As part of his developed personality, he has become arrogant and extremely confident in his abilities.
Because of this he is very comfortable, even if he is not above mocking or jokingly (or cruelly) mocking others. Shard is also protective of Larry Lynx, so it's possible that his characteristics only come from his Power Gem core. Shard hates being buried, this may be because he was nearly destroyed by the lava. He has a way of thinking like Sonic's, finding solutions to problems in the most unexpected way at the most unexpected moments. Since he rebuilt himself he has begun to have a morality towards flesh and blood beings, as he seems to crave the kind of familial ties enjoyed by his organic counterpart himself. This could be due to the time spent together with NICOLE which seems to start to have feelings for him and other side.
While he has an ego and is confident, Shard is also insecure as he is troubled by his past mistakes and the negative image Eggman's evil created for robots. He absolutely wants to change this trait of himself and is even willing to commit suicide for the people he cares about. Furthermore, although he seemingly wishes to help his fellow artificial beings, he is willing to destroy anyone unable to go beyond their destructive programming. He also wishes to atone for the wrongs he has committed and aid his former enemies in their battle against evil.
