Why do people need the validation? What should matter is what you – as an individual, believe. And why you believe it. What, are we so insecure that we have to find 18th century letters to validate our beliefs?
~ Shaun Hastings.
I had this colleague. He was our boss's son. I didn't much care for him at the start. Everyone treated him like he was so bloody special. To me, he wasn't invested in anything that didn't affect him personally. But, I was wrong about him. He became my friend. Put himself through hell. And he saved us all in the end. So I reckon... Well, I can't apologize to him, but I can, I don't know. I can try and live up to his example.
~ Shaun to Bishop.

Shaun Hastings is one of the two tritagonists of the Assassin's Creed franchise's series modern day storyline (alongside Rebecca Crane).

He is a member of the Assassins who gives tactical guidance to numerous Assassin teams across the Earth. His support is often targeted towards Assassins who are out in the field, occasionally offering assistance in the form of messages relayed from higher command. Within his team, Shaun acted as both historian and analyst, assisting Desmond Miles during his time in the Animus. This help mostly came in the form of creating database entries on the varying people, places, and events Desmond encountered.

He is voiced by Danny Wallace.

Roles[]

He serves as one of the two tritagonists (alongside Rebecca Crane) of the Ezio trilogy (ACII, Brotherhood and Revelations), ACIII, and AC: Syndicate, one of the two secondary antagonists of AC IV: Black Flag (alongside Rebecca Crane), the tritagonist of AC: Unity and one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Rebecca Crane) of AC: Valhalla.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Shaun Hastings was born on November 16th, 1985 in England to unnamed parents, and became interested in conspiracy theories at a very young age. Unlike most members of the Assassin order, Shaun never knew about the war between the brotherhood and the Templars, but he would begin to investigate into Abstergo Industries when he was around fifteen years old. While working as a junior professor in 2010, Shaun would spread information about Abstergo, which caused him to be kidnapped by Abstergo's under the command of the comapny's head, Alan Rikkin. He was then rescued by the assassin Rebecca Crane, and Shaun was then recruited into the Assassin order, becoming acquainted with William Miles and Lucy Stillman.

Assassin's Creed II[]

When Lucy and Desmond escaped from Abstergo, Shaun was brought into the team to act as the historian and analyst who provided Miles information via database entries. Shaun would comment on Desmond finding Subject 16s puzzles across Italy, and often gave Miles advice on finding the resolutions to each puzzle. Desmond succeeded in reliving the memories of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, and located the apple of Eden while also receiving a message from the Isu scientist Minerva. When Warren Vidic assaulted the team's location, Shaun assisted Rebecca in packing their equipment while Lucy and Desmond dealt with Vidci's henchmen.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood[]

Traveling to Monteriggioni, Shaun and the team set shop in the sanctuary below the villa to let Desmond continue to relieve the memories of Ezio to locate the apple of Eden. Hastings continued to assist Desmond by providing him entries about Roma, and would tell Miles about certain individuals (e.g. Cesare Borgia) when outside of the animus. After Desmond managed to find the location of the apple via Ezio's memories, the team left to the Colosseum, and entered the vault via the use of password Ezio left for Miles. Once reaching the apple, the group were frozen in place by Minerva, who forced Desmond to kill Lucy since her allegiance were with the Templars.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations[]

Once Desmond fell into a coma, Shaun decided to stay behind and arrange Lucy's funeral as Rebecca and William Miles brought Desmond to New York in an attempt to awake him. Though Shaun and Rebecca don't act as support Desmond, they can be heard conversating while Miles was on the animus island with Clay Kaczmarek. Desmond would relieve the final memories of Ezio, and awoke from his coma and told his allies what he needed to do.

Assassin's Creed III[]

Traveling to the grand temple, Shaun assisted Desmond by providing information while he went through the memories of Haytham Kenway and Ratonhnhaké:ton, and providing the locations of power sources needed to open the temple's door. After Desmond went through his ancestors memories, Shaun witnessed Minerva and Juno speak with Desmond, and left the grand temple when Miles activated the eye to sacrifice himself.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag[]

Shaun appears as a minor character in Black Flag, where he and Rebecca infilitrated Abstergo Entertainment to obtain data files from an Abstergo researcher under the orders of John Standish.

Assassin's Creed: Syndicate[]

In 2015, Shaun and Rebecca were tasked by Bishop to get information on the Shroud of Eden, but the two failed as Isabelle Ardant confronted them alongside Juhani Otso Berg and Violet da Costa. The two survived the incident, and decided to wait for Bishop's initiate to find the location of the shroud via relieving the memories of Jacob and Evie Frye. Once the memories were fully synchronized, Shaun and Rebecca traveled to Buckingham Palace with fellow assassin Galina Voronina, but failed to obtain the shroud as the Templars retrieved it.

Assassin's Creed: Valhalla[]

After surviving Buckingham Palace Shaun and Rebecca continued serving the Assassins and eventually became married. By 2020 the world became jeopardized once more as severe weather conditions plagued the Earth despite Desmond's sacrifice to avert it and both Shaun and Rebecca began looking for the cause and how to stop it. It's also hinted that Shaun and Rebecca are expecting but both are worried for the child's future because of the life they have (likely reinforced by Desmond's bad experience growing up raised to be an Assassin). Shaun and Rebecca were later assigned to assist Layla Hassan, an Abstergo employee-turned-Assassin, who's contact with a Piece of Eden, the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus, resulted in her becoming possessed by the Isu Aletheia and killing an innocent. With Layla still suffering bleeding effect side-effects Shaun and Rebecca were tasked to monitor her Animus' expierences to ensure another relapse didn't occur. Around this time they received a strange message from an unknown source telling them of a Viking graveyard in New England, the site of the historical Vinland, and helped Layla relive the life of the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir. Through this they discovered the existence of the Yggdrasil chamber in Hordaland which was the device Desmond used to save the world, but was left destabilized in its following years threatening to undo his work.

After Layla departed to repair the damage Shaun and Rebecca were confronted by the resurrected Hidden Ones' member Basim Ibn Ishaq, Eivor's companion-turned-enemy and reincarnation of the Isu Loki, who'd used Yggdrasil and Trismegistus to revive himself. While Layla successfully averted another catastrophe her mind was trapped within Yggdrasil in the process but she sent a message to Shaun and Rebecca asking not to come looking for her and that she was working with someone to figure out how to prevent another catastrophe. Shaun and Rebecca were originally angry with Basim for leaving her but he insisted she chose to remain behind and doesn't want rescuing. They were also somewhat intimidated by Basim both for being a Hidden One and an Isu reincarnation. However Basim requested a meeting with William Miles claiming to have a plan to stop the Templars and Shaun and Rebecca, reluctantly, left to retrieve William after Basim's insistence the meeting occur face-to-face. While they were away Basim reviewed Shaun's research notes and admired his deduction of the Templars and Order of Ancients common threads, and his deduction that Basim's own partner Hytham was the naming inspiration for Haytham Kenway.
